In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

Worse for the far right but better for humans.

The far right is mostly collectivist and indistinguishable from socialist in the amount and scope of power they want to give to the state.

They sometimes (not often) just disagree on what to do with that power with the left.

Let the people decide what they want to buy. Let the government regulate what can be bought. I think those two things are the best way to implement capitalism.

If the government decides what can be bought then it's not the people deciding lol

Ok let companies sell rat poison as a miracle cure and then let the free market decide. Sounds like the best way to do things

Also notice how we went from regulates to decide? Why misquote?

regulating WHAT they can buy, as you wrote, is deciding what can be bought.

Maybe you meant regulating how it is produced, dunno.

but anyway yes i think letting people sell literal snake oil is a lot better than having the FDA.

As usual it's not about me not seeing the possible benefits of banning rat poison (btw tort law and fraud in commerce law would still apply even with no regulations).

It's that i also can see what they can ban that shouldn't be banned and how their regulations increase the costs of everything (helping incumbents vs competitors), and the net effect is bad.

Not really. If I regulate an item to make sure what’s on the label is what’s in the package, I’m not preventing them from buying what they want, I’m helping them buy it.

As for your anti-FDA rant, yeah we tried that and it sucked. Americans don’t want to abolish the FDA, they want to reform it to make it easier to get over the regulatory requirements. That’s not to say we don’t want our food and drugs regulated at all.

If Italy wants to abolish their version of the FDA, enjoy it

That’s stupid .
For example when I go to a restaurant I’m happy to know their is laws and some inspections are done to make sure what I eat is generally in acceptable terms so that I don’t get sick…
Me or my children’s !

As with all hard-core libertarians, the Colonel's worldview doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. They always forget we live in a society. It does no good to be the winner when it's because you are the only one left on a raft in the middle of the ocean.

From the little I know of libertarianism, which admittedly all comes from reading this forum, it has always struck me as the sort of world view a teenager would formulate during an epiphany while high on psychedelics, try and make work in his head for the next couple of years, then finally realise it's stupid and impractical and grow out of it by the age of 16-17. The fact that there are presumably functioning adults who have lived on this planet longer than 20 years and still don't understand the concept of a society has always been a source of puzzlement to me.

I am not an anarchist, and allowing states to regulate with no federal intromission wouldn't cause a genocide

Anarchists deny power will always exists, small state libertarians are compatible with society. In fact I just ask for many (not all) things to go back to 1880-1890 Australia or USA in terms of rules in society.

Hardly an utopia, real world examples abound of lower regulations. In fact, most countries in the world had far fewer regulations until recently

Besides the idea that society would collapse if no entity existed with the power to ban new vaping devices or nicotine patches or anything else that comes to mind even vaguely related to health or food for sale nationwide without congress explicit approval is just bonkers.

You guys just completely dismiss the enormous damage generated by regulations and given you like regulations in the platonic sense as an ethereal intrinsic positive, you just want as many of them as possible because "otherwise you eat poison"

In a world without the FDA private entities exist that rank and analyze products and you can always trust your preferred one and only buy stuff which has its mark of approval, but at least everyone else is free to do otherwise.

You guys instead insist that forcing violently the temporary preferences of the majority+ setting up a system abused by incumbents to protect their interests is better than the private sector in competition.

And as usual, as with everything that the private sector can do in competition, it does it better than the government.

Have you even started working on a time machine?

Are you sure it's the govt you have an issue with--or is it really the women around you that are oppressing you? Be honest--you're hoping society will socialism up some old timey men are in complete charge conditions because you can't do it yourself 😀

And why stop at states ?
Afterwards when libertarians don’t like state laws they say , yes we should permits local cities laws and ban states laws since the difference between rural and cities life are too different ….

It’s just the reversion of society evolution to some kind of colonialism life before in the 1700s .

How great life was back then …

I'm convinced that luciom wants the feudal system back. I'm guessing he would be particularly giddy about moats and pouring hot oil on the infidels.

Nah again you are missing context -> or in poker term “it depends” .
That’s what extremist do .

We advocate more about a combination of the 2 , some form of compromise because that’s how u find common grounds between the many philosophies of life people hold .

You it’s like me I’m 100% right , nothing is good on the other side
(which extremely large -center right , center , center left , left , far left )
and so they are stupid and the ennemies and should be strike down because they are evil ..

Us in general actually recognize some part of the left are great and some of the right are great too and we try combine the 2 .

Anarchist? Genocide? Quite the take away from my little metaphor.

I mean in order to be alone on a raft, you need some wide scale genocide to happen

Luciom utopia world is just revert back to the law of jungle .
No regulation , total freedom , only the strongest survives .

I bet no wars and problems would emerges from that .

I think it's pretty clear that the people arguing as if they were 16y old aren't the libertarians

I'll just chalk it up to language nuances and not suggest you are obtusely literal.

there was a libertarian utopia in new hampshire in the early 2000s that you can google and read about. i think it lasted like a few months and got conquered and overrun by bears. libertarians are not worldly people. the real basement dwellers of political discourse.

I still don’t understand why an italian is so invested in antifederalism lol why we always get these people who don’t live here acting like american patriots

antifederalism? I am pro federalism, I am anti centralization.

we are descending into totalitarian horror here in the EU (and in Europe in general) so I am interested in the only beacon of hope for liberty left.

I also have family in the USA although I am not a citizen (my dad naturalized when I was already an adult).
