2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Cycle watch in Philly. Stubbs hitting for the cycle 10 days apart would be wild.

KC used a position player in the 9th to pitch and he didn't throw a pitch over 57 MPH. I guess he made sure to plunk Stubbs so he couldn't hit for the cycle lol.

He's no JT Realmuto.

Congrats to the White Sox for hitting 100 losses before the end of August.

The Astros are the worst good team in a few seasons.

New power raniking.

Phils-rotation that can actually win in the postseason
Indians- balanced(based? Idk)
Padres maybe
Yankees, Doyer,O's, brew all have shite pitching.
Royals probably sneak in there to take it all just to piss me off.

Yes, I misspelled raniking.

Phils bullpen is the most rested, no? Their starters are going 6+ more than anyone, IIRC.

I still favor the Yankees and Dodgers for power, but those bullpens aren't imposing anymore.

I think CLE wins another pennant because of their bullpen. They don't have much power, but they don't strike out. They're the pesky team that could go on a run. much more so than the Padres.

Judge has a 1.201 OPS now.

.333/.465/.736 with 51 HR and 122 RBI. There are 31 more games.

This is actually the greatest season ever by a right-handed batter in history, and it's not even close.

He has a 223 wRC+.

Only Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds have had full seasons with higher.

MLB RHBs, career wRC+

1. Judge, 173
2. Horsby, 170
3. Trout, 169
4. McGwire, 157
5. Foxx, 156

The 27-point gap between Aaron Judge and Jimmie Foxx is the gap between Foxx and Moises Alou.

The 27-point gap .

When did Realmuto get slid to the 7 hole? Credit to Girardi for not just leaving the big name in cleanup.

Yes ,I know they have some other ding dong manager in there, don't care to look it up

It's been 13 years since the Phils traded Jon Singleton to Houston? I thought Houston won the Pence trade even though none of those prospects panned out.

remember singleton being a huge prospect

Domingo Santana was the PTBNL. He was probably the better prospect, but Singleton was good before he was suspended for a positive THC drug test.

Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

Santana always seemed like he had the talent to be special. Deeply frustrating

A team that you can predict losses is just as good as a team that you can predict wins.

I'm sure some of you have already beat off to the article, but still a cool read. I would not have pulled Rich Aurilia in a trivia contest. There's more stat stuff, but I don't steal from writers' nut.

Roger Maris (61) and Mickey Mantle (54), 1961 Yankees: 115
Babe Ruth (60) and Lou Gehrig (47), 1927 Yankees: 107
Barry Bonds (73) Rich Aurilia (37), 2001 Giants: 110
Mark McGwire (70) and Ray Lankford (31), 1998 Cardinals: 101
Alex Rodriguez (57) and Rafael Palmeiro (43), 2002 Rangers: 100

Mark McGwire (70) and Ray Lankford (31), 1998 Cardinals: 101

Lankford hitting that many HRs is further confirmation of juiced balls / massive roiding in that era.

Gerritt Cole is the most overrated pitcher in the entire league.

Apparently, barrel rates only matter if the bat hits the ball

The Dbacks paid $15M for 13.8 WAR across 6 years ($1.1M per bWAR)
The Nationals paid $144M for 1.4 WAR across 6 years ($102.9M per bWAR)

Looks like the Nationals were betting KK into trup QQ.

*stros adding Jayson Heyward. Whatever, Kyle Tucker got abducted by aliens in June after fouling a ball off his shin. Zero chance you baseball dorks could name the Astros 12 offensive players.
