$50 to $35k and more

Hi,

This is is my second and final attempt at a poker / life blog.
Here’s where I’m at:

23 years old, 179cm, 92kg, final year law student who’s not looking forward to becoming a lawyer.
I learned to play poker december of last year and have been absolutely obsessed ever since. I want to see where poker takes me and take this as an opportunity to get good at something I enjoy and focus on my health as well.

Though I’m very heavy for my height, i have been going to the gym regularly for 5 years and have become decently strong. Last year I did a cut and I think I look good at around 75kg, so thats where I want to be at the end of the year. -17kg should be possible in 4 months so lets see!

RN I play 2NL on GG and its obviously beatable, even for me, but I keep losing money when going up and splashing on tourneys, which I need to stop doing. I will go to 5NL once I reach 20 buyins for the stake. Rn I have $50 on there.

I will update at least once a week on the following goals / rules:

- No tournaments or other gamemodes, just 4 / 6 tableing cashgames in 45 minute sessions. If I can’t do 45 focussed mins I can’t play,

- < 2300 kcal per day, and track my weight every tuesday for the post,

- At least 15 minutes of impactfull cardio every gym sessions. I have been going to the gym 6 days a week for years now, but cardio never stuck and that needs to change. At least 15 minutes of running / uphill walking 6 times a week seems like a good start.

My studying routines (both for poker and school) deffo need some work. First I want to get used to putting in volume at the tables and getting my health / grinding routines right, and then I want to add studying via gtow / other methods.

Also would be interesting to hear how others tackled the things im looking to do if you’ve been there before

My only cheatdays will be when chillin / drinking / having dinner with friends and family. Only once a week, and I avoid all other substances like weed etc.
So, to recap and clarify:

I will update at least once a week on the following goals / rules:

- No tournaments or other gamemodes, just 4 / 6 tableing cashgames in 45 minute sessions. If I can’t do 45 focussed mins I can’t play,

- One cheatday a week max, which can only consist of a social activity (so chillin, having dinner, drinking) with friends or family. No other substances or than alcohol, I eat way too much when high.

Then I’ll be able to pay off my student loans and live off off poker for a year to pursue it full time! Grand and ambitious but I hope its possible

Today went well, 140 kg (315 lbs) squat for 5 reps went well and I also stuck to the cardio and kcal goal.

Poker though.. in the morning I had work, and since its a customer service job where rarely people call and I can actually do whatever, I decided to play some cash. Two things came out of this:

I’m not ready to 6-table yet, Ill stick to four for now,
And I get really distracted when someone I have work and messages in the back of my mind and my focus just isnt on poker. I actually lost like 13 buyins during that session, ended at like $24 or something. It happened very quickly and was just because I wasn’t paying full attention, literally clicked the wrong button a couple of times lol. Sickening.

Made up for it by two short 45 minute four-tableing sessions in the evening and I comfortably got back to $42.
Lesson learned, no poker during work lol

gl with your goals!

For the money goal, I guess it's nice to have some sort of big goal you are working towards but I would focus on making smaller steps while you improve and everything. Once you are able to beat x nl (could be any stake at midstakes probably) and you work consistent the money will come anyway

You are for sure right, and I suppose the 35k was more of a number I had decided would be a good title and overarching goal. I think my short term goal for right now is to reach 5NL (so $100 bankroll) on GG before october (since my exams start then).

When I get there, I’d also like to start studying but I should deffo first focus on not being a spewtard tiltmonkey like I was today after getting some stupid bluffs herocalled… mental game leaks are big over here ($39 rn)

Thanks for the gl wishes and reminding me to set intermittent smaller goals, did not really think of that

Almost two months later gonna pick it up again lol.
I have not been consistent with poker, eating right or my own studies really. Just finished exam period and I want to give some weekly updates.

- Right now im 94kg, and I should really start cutting now to give myself a chance at being not-fat when the weather gets better. Gaining lots of strength in the gym so thats nice! But I will do 15 min of cardio each gymsession (6x /week) and <2400 kcal per day. I will update on weight!

- still just playing nl2 basically because I enjoy it and with the small profits I make I play tourneys, I dont really make anything but at least I don’t really have to deposit often so thats something i guess... I want to stop blowing the few buyins I make at tourneys so I will commit to only playing cash and seeing where it goes. Thats it really. Br is €52 (since last update I redeposited once €50).

- seeing as I really wasnt prepared for my exam season I will commit to studying at least 30 minutes a day , and also at least 10 minutes of poker studying a day. I’ve really struggled with this and making a small step everyday is better than what I used to do (grand goals and then never following through).
