I can totally understand why people don't like cruises. there are many reasons to hate them. the one I went on was the best trip of my life though lol

I get so stressed and miserable traveling. but just floating along was sublime. I could lay in bed and drink/eat, and look at the incredible views, and breathe the fresh air.

and Alaska particularly is a hard place to travel to, and travel around in. but not on a cruise ship.

biggest drawbacks for me are the slaves and the pollution

One of my favorite parts of a cruise is at dinner time. Eating a fancy multi-course dinner while kicking back with the family.

Filthy I agree, Cruises are the Ultimate low stress vacation. The cruise-line does all the work.

I would just stay on the ship the whole time

being dropped off for a day at some random port in Europe to wander around some city sounds awful

being dropped off to take a hike in some jaw dropping beautiful nature sounds great

Alaska might be the only case where I would give a cruise ship a shot.

the day we spent cruising glacier bay was maybe the most memorable day of my life

Funny enough, I get invited by my family to go on cruises all the time and they are talking about an Alaska cruise right now. First one I'm considering although I'd still rather just travel to Alaska myself with some objective.

I can kinda see the appeal that a cruise has as described by Mark. I've always really enjoyed the kicking back, going to dinner, beach, etc aspects of family get togethers like weddings, reunions, graduations, etc. Just think I'll still always be more attracted to trips that involve some big outdoor objective and a decent bit of danger and uncertainty. I love coming home from a trip exhausted 😀

I should say I do enjoy exploring cities, but I never try to hit all the tourist stuff. Getting to know a neighborhood or section of a city really well is more appealing. Or being on foot/bike a lot. Riding the entirety of Manhattan from Inwood Park south and over to Brooklyn was one of my favorite days of vacation last year. Stopping at random spots for food/drink, openly smoking pre-rolls..

A cruise is right at the bottom on vacation choices for me.

I hate the idea of a holiday costing x but everything is an add on. Want drinks included then add on y. Want donner included then add on z. Want excursions included, access to the premium facilities, priority boarding, a window.

The only way I'd do it is if money wasn't an object, but then I'd just charter a yacht I guess.

Yeah, you nailed it.

Of course there's the tired line of the cruise-enjoyers...It's included! You still paid for it in the first place.

The best vacation I ever went on was last September. Including the flights, and every dollar I spent for the entire 16 days I was gone was around 2k. It ended with one of my best friends in the hospital with a broken back and the other questioning his sanity, but I had fun. First and only time I've ever had to use my WFR training irl, lol. Got this photo smoking a gold plated joint in central park out of it.

****ing awesome pic!!!

cruises are so cheap its immoral. seriously.

and I'm not saying cruises are affordable. I just mean it's cheap in the sense that the workers are making 3 dollars an hour or whatever. it's this gigantic mega ship that is polluting our planet

it's luxury. you can live in luxury(while traveling!) for less than 200 a day total, everything included, unlimited food and alcohol(I think they limit you to like 17 drinks a day now or something like that)

A research project for filthy.

I found this article on Indeed, giving annual salaries/wages for cruise employees.

Alaska?

I hope you're going to glacier bay. that was far and away the highlight. and not all ships go there.

either way though Alaska is amazing, and it'll make your second trip back there better

Thanks everyone! Been incredibly exhausting first 10 days, but she's a little angel. I hope everyone is well!

Xander, PM if you want to chat about your red post.

This is the first cruise that didn't have a poker table in the casino.

Rip

You definitely get tired of eating. Cruise eating is a skill.

You dig for about 2 minutes and realize this is a complete bullshit article, tbh. Clicked on the link for average salary for entertainer...because I've had friends who did this work through college and thought the amount listed was a bit high. The link takes you to a page that gives you the average salary for those positions in the entire US. Not just for cruise ship employees. According to the link you posted, Atlanta is the best city to be a cruise ship entertainer, lol. You click on the boating/cruise specific positions and you'll see the page it takes you to start to make sense, but it's absolutely weak sauce if you're here trying to use this as an argument against the fact that low level cruise employees aren't getting shafted...they are.

Yeah, listing the average nationwide salary for a given position on an article about cruise ship salaries is totally 'facts' 🙄

Even that is way too much research. In life as in sheep, no research is the only way to live.

This I can agree with!
