Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Since we're talking first movie star crushes...
same energy as this but without the cleavage
Watched Magnolia once again tonight. John C. Reilly's cop frames the question at the end of the film, asking how can we forgive.
It's not that difficult. You just do it. Melora Walters smile at the end of the film kills me every time. It is an act of forgiveness. And there is much to forgive.
Magnolia has everything. Fantastic camera work and lighting. Maybe the best ensemble cast ever. Frogs (Exodus 8:2). I've seen it a half dozen times, and I like it more with each viewing.

Forgot about all that but sadly Gmail has deleted all my emails before 2022 and that happened in 2020. Phoebe looks too young in that movie now but it still reminds me of a certain time in my life.
I bet the email is there somewhere. It sounds like Gmail is just filtering the last 2 years or something, I know my mobile Gmail account has this setting while my desktop does not.

I normally don't use subtitles, but for some reason I had them on the last time I watched this movie, and John C. Reilly's character says some notable things towards the end that I otherwise wouldn't have picked up on (almost inaudible), specifically a metaphor about corrective oral surgery relating to Donnie (William H. Macy). If you didn't catch it the first six times, listen for it.
There's so much to love about this movie. Shout-out to Henry Gibson.
Henry Gibson's character is named Thurston Howell..

After finally watching Alien Covenant I would say:
Aliens > Alien >>> Romulus >> Resurrection => Prometheus > Covenant.
Still haven't seen Alien 3, not sure if I will because the consensus still seems to be that it's bad.
I don't think any of the Alien films I've seen are bad films. Placing Resurrection slightly above Prometheus is likely the most contentious pick. Both of those start as good movies that get worse. I suspect one's feelings on Prometheus largely hinges on your view of the Engineers and the origin of humanity and the Aliens. It didn't work for me. I'm in the camp that thinks Elizabeth Shaw's line about "choosing to believe" should disqualify her from being a scientist.
Covenant ranks bottom largely becaise of all the stupid things people do throughout the films, this has the most stupid. I nearly stopped watching when the first guy gets facehugged. It's even dumber than the guy who wondered around picking up ammo in Resurrection for no reason whatsoever.

Never have I seen a film that featured Happenstance as a leading character with such prominence...
But what are you going to do... stupidpeopledostupidthings.
:p

This is why Prometheus and covenant pissed me off so much. Amazing looking films with BIG ideas. But I can't get past scientists arriving on a planet they know nothing about - in both films - and then doing crap like taking their helmets off, pissing on flora, leaving behind cigarettes, and ****ing BENDING DOWN TO POKE AT AN ALIEN LIFE FORM.
Discuss.
I’d rather read Isaiah!
Who's Fred Savage?
The Wizard was a fun flick from childhood days.
Always had a little crush on Jenny Lewis...but from when she was, you know, an adult and singing. Not from a stupid Fred Savage movie.
Whoa, somehow I have never seen this movie. As someone who grew up in 1980s arcades I now really want to track it down.
Also, for anyone wondering, the best "movie" (story) about 1980s arcades and obsession with certain games I've seen is called THE BISHOP OF BATTLE. Google is your friend for more info....

It's basically a 90 minute ad for Super Mario Bros. 3., but there are some arcade scenes.
Last Starfighter was ****ing rad. It was as ridiculous as I remembered, but almost brilliantly self aware at points. Overall, a wonderfully nostalgic experience.
the wizard occupied an odd period of my life, i never knew it nor of it during it's theatrical release, growing up in a rural town where only channel we got was pbs
but later in life when we got 3-4 channels, it'd sometimes come on on saturdays, and it always occupied this mythical portion of my life, when i never experienced it in full and thus it always had an air of mystery and grander than life gravitas behind the bits i caught

glad you enjoyed it, didn't want to harsh your high at the time so i withheld mentioning (or at least i hope i did) that i was deeply disappointed to watch it again as an adult

Oh yeah, no worries at all. I fully expected it to be awful and was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed ourselves. Could definitely see it being a lesser experience watching elsewhere. Our viewing theatre was small and intimate, fried pickles were next level, and of course we were high af. Had a great audience too.
