The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
Just horrible. RIP
He was my son's favorite player when he was with the Flames and my son was just getting into hockey. Just sad and tragic for his family and the blue jackets organization.
We are in shock here in Leafs land. :(
NHL player Johnny Gaudreau of the Columbus Blue Jackets was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle in his home state of New Jersey. He was 31.
New Jersey State Police said Gaudreau was one of two cyclists struck and killed by a car in Salem County, New Jersey. Gaudreau’s younger brother, Matthew, 29, was the other victim in the crash, police confirmed.
The Carneys Point, New Jersey, natives were in the area for their sister Katie’s wedding scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.
According to police, the Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road when a man driving in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck them from behind. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver, Sean M. Higgins, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and charged with two counts of death by auto and jailed at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
Johnny Gaudreau, known as “Johnny Hockey,” has played 11 professional seasons in the league and was going into his third with the Blue Jackets. He played his first nine with the Calgary Flames, a tenure that included becoming one of the sport’s top players and a fan favorite across North America.
Gaudreau, at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, was part of a generation of hockey players who thrived in an era of speed and skill that made being undersized less of a disadvantage. He scored 20-plus goals six times and was a 115-point player in 2021-22 as a first-time NHL All-Star when he had a career-best 40 goals and 75 assists.
A fourth-round pick of Calgary’s in 2011, Gaudreau helped Boston College win the NCAA championship in 2012 and in 2014 took home the Hobey Baker Award as the top college player in the country.
Gaudreau was a point-a-game player with 642 points in 644 regular-season and playoff games since breaking into the league. He holds the men’s world championship records by a U.S. player with 30 assists and 43 points, earlier this year breaking marks previously held by Patrick Kane.
couldn't believe it when i heard, horrible. rest in peace
Tragic I guess the cars ahead pulled over to the left to pass the cyclist safely and the guy tries to pass on the shoulder said he had 6-7 beers .
On the night of his sisters wedding as well so sad
When I was a little kid, I always heard a story about a wedding day disaster. It must have happened 20 years before I was born, but the Gaudreau accident brought it out again.
That's a scar that will last generations.
Leafs currently 9th for Stanly cup odds at +1600
8 years $112 million for Draisaitl in Edmonton.
Obviously a good thing for the Oil but kinda funny that some of their fans talked about how one reason they can't match the offer sheets (beyond the sheer numbers) is that you can't cave to role players when all the core guys were gonna take less to stick around. Safe to say Leon made up for the deal he just thoroughly outperformed.
Highest AAV in league.

Location of the accident
That road looks like 5 meters wide at best. If that's the actual location, the driver must have been beyond shitfaced to try to pass right of a car that had gone left to overtake Johnny and Matthew. He would've gone off the road in the best case scenario.
Or I guess I shouldn't underestimate ******* drivers
Just a reminder everyone it's like a month before the season starts! 2 weeks "ish" for preseason I got asked if I wanted to go to the 1st preseason game which also happens to be the start of my holidays.😃
Last minute Leafs will wait till last minute to decide on some stuff like last year or something stupid.🙄

they were talking about the VGK rookie camp starting soon on the news last night. first mention of VGK in the local media that I've heard in a while...the new season is indeed near.
are those things new or just never been on my radar before?
yeah rookie tournaments have been around for a while, i guess they only difference now is that ~everyone(?) participates in one of them. just guessing based on how many of them there are. idk why the nhl doesn't copy the nba and have a summer league for this, other than the league permanently being 20 years behind their own ass on everything. would even be a little boost to revenue, more ticket sales, more tv money etc. i'm sure they'll figure this out in 5-10 years and/or once the bett man finally ****s off

at first, I thought you meant "paid time off" cuz he's always injured lol
at least they didn't just sign him to a 1-year deal cuz he's Max Pacioretty. Seems smart to see if he has anything left in training camp at least if u r that desperate for a goal scorer. Ofc, even if he has a good training camp, he's often injured so he may not play much anyways. so it would seem smarter to call up a promising young guy instead if the Leafs have any of those in waiting.
I don't have anything against him and hope he can still find some career. But I doubt it at his age and health history.
