Love that movie. But wasn’t it directed by Sidney Lumet? I was just thinking about The Verdict while watching Dog Day Afternoon.

I saw Dog Day Afternoon in a theater when it first came out. That was a long time ago.

Lucky... that must have really been emotionally something during that first run theatrical release.

I was only 13 when that came out, I guess I could have tried to sneak into the theater, but I was still trying to figure out a way to get into Enter the Dragon or The Exorcist even those it had already been out for a couple years.

Come to think of it, Jaws cam out in 1975 also.

These 50 years later we call these films truly great and though we appreciate them for their art, it isn't the same as seeing them first hand in that era and being emotionally shocked and changed by them

I read this thread every few months (I tend to forget about it) and I love the commentary by all.

The recent Big Lebowski posts had me dying laughing.

The bad - everything...

Shame, because his last movie, Knock at the Cabin, was damn good.

I, too, really enjoyed Knock at the Cabin... I find David Bautista can really hold the screen like few actors these days, which is why I still really liked Army of the Dead.

My mind is blown away by the fact that Willa Fitzgerald is the deputy from Reacher. Woah.

that first season was really pretty good.

Saw besides Dog Day Afternoon, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cries and Whispers (almost all Bergman films after 1972), Jaws, and Armacord. Also saw as a freshman in college many Frederick Wiseman documentaries.

First real adult film as a senior in high school was The Last Picture Show.

Oh, and Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS (?!).

Speaking of Jaws, saw it was on AMC last night. Flipped over to see where they were at.

Upon commercials ending, it restarted with, "Mr. Hooper, that's the USS Indianapolis...."

What a great scene. Gets me every time.

Watching The Final Countdown from 1980, with Kirk Douglass, Martin Sheen, Ron O'Neal, Katherine Ross, James Farantino, and Charles Durning.

About a modern aircraft carrier out of Pearl Harbor that gets sucked back in time to Dec. 6, 1944. Do they let history happen? Dol they take on the Japanese Fleet thats about to attack?

It's not a good movie, but it is a fun one and a film I loved when I was a teen.

by mrbaseball k

Watching this right now for the first time in maybe 20 years. I frikken love this movie! I was still in the Navy when it came out and fresh off of an aircraft carrier. I saw it when it was first released when I was in the shipyards at Bremerton Wahington at the Bremerton Theater. All the planes in this movie have been retired which makes me feel real old. Also I had no recollection of Martin Sheen being in this movie? I definitely remember Kirk Douglas, Farantino and Ross.

There are a couple

I couldn't stand it any more. I had to rewatch this for the first time since it came out. What a great flick! I had remembered it all wrong so it was like watching it for the first time!

I saw The Verdict in the theaters when it first came out...such an amazing movie.

First grown up movie I saw in the theaters was Jaws. First r-rated movie I saw in the theaters was Midnight Express. Also saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail when it first came out.

Just wondering if we should really need to use spoiler tags that are like 50 years old.

Spoiler
Show

I knew Charlotte Rampling was up to something in The Verdict as soon as I saw her in the bar. Women that beautiful don't hang out in Boston Irish bars.

I never found her attractive. Good actress, tho.

But those eyes! She's fabulous in Andrew Haighs' 45 Years. Such a sad film but brilliant I think.

His All of Us Strangers is one of the best films of the past few years.

keep meaning to see that

The good - Josh Hartnett. He plays a good psycho.

The bad - everything else. Ludicrous plot that doesn't hold up. Too many coincidences and luck escapes. Saleka, our "final girl," is a good singer but a nothing actress.

Mildly diverting, but a solid "meh."

Disappointing, because by the social media reaction, you'd think this was unique and brilliant, and it is neither. Shame, because his last movie, Knock at the Cabin, was damn good.

Trap is arguably the worst 2024 movie I’ve seen so far. Absolutely ridiculous. I don’t even think Josh Hartnett was good. Very corny performance imo. Every interaction he had with a human was so cringe.

One From the Heart

I know, I know. Most people hate this one. Why did Coppola decide to do this? It is, after all, terrible, isn't it?

Why do I love it? Its score, its cinematography, its editing, its artificiality, all of it.

One From the Heart is a musical about love, love lost, and love regained. Teri Garr glides through the film. Her tango with Raul Julia, her one night stand, oozes sex. The dance then spills out for a great musical production on the Las Vegas Strip. Frederic Forest has a one night stand with Natassia Kinski, a circus performer.

Shot completely on sound stages by master cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, the film looks completely unrealistic and artificial. But don't all great musicals? Coppola went broke making this film.

Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle sing the musical numbers. And when Teri Garr and Frederic Forest return to each other at the end of the film, I find it extraordinarily moving. How can I not when Crystal Gayle sings this:

I don't care if no one likes this film. I love it.

On Criterion now.

I love One from the Heart... and I don't care that I am not one of the cool kids.

It was ok not damn good - the whole concept was inventive enough but the ending once again was a let down in Knock at the Cabin

From what I read of the plot (I stopped before it got into complete spoiler territory), it seemed awfully similar to The Cabin In The Woods.

The first grown-up movie I saw in the theater was Smokey And The Bandit, when I was 8. My grandmother took my 6 year old brother and me; I'm sure she had no idea how much cursing it had. I don't remember if it was her idea or if I somehow tricked her into taking us. My parents would definitely not have approved.

just checking in to echo the love for one from the heart

The only movies I can remember from the In Theater experience while being under the age of 10 was Midway in Sensurround and Five Fingers of Death

The first grown-up movie I remember going to was Animal House.

We would've been 14. One of my friends was large (grew up to be about 6'4"), so we told the ticket guy he was 17 and we were his brothers.

We thought we really pulled one off. I'm sure it was that he just didn't care though.
