2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
uh, I'm a crads fan so I'd be thrilled with that. But it's not happening.
I just got back from cradsland and watching the crads vs. Yankees series with family. They're in disbelief the crads won the series. I'm also starting to think that Helsley is one of the greatest relievers of modern times. But I've seen nothing to indicate the crads are suddenly a NL playoff team this season.
They're not because their floor sucks and their ceiling is good but, again, their floor sucks.
I'm 1-0 going to games this year though, so I can turn it around if I can go to every remaining game.
3 SBs and still counting for Ohtani today.
Elly De La Cruz has 61 SB's, 61 RBIs, 61 XBHs, and needs two walks for 61. 61 Trifecta going for superfecta. He's having a good year. Much improved walks/OB. Just doesn't seem like enough runs for all the times on base, all the steals, all the XBH. He has 90 and gonna get just past 100 maybe, but its seems he should be up around 125 or so with this combination of stats.
He did it. He walked twice tonight, and so has 61 SBs, 61 RBIs, 61XBHs, and 61 walks.
First ever 44-44 man, and counting. 😀 Most homers for a 40 steal man is 46. That's next up.
I remember commenting when he had 16 SB's that I couldn't see him running enough late in the year to challenge for 50-50. Since then he has way more steals than De La Cruz pretty sure.
Very good or elite athletes who actually know how to hit -- Ohtani, Trout, Acuna, Witt, Betts, etc. -- end up being superstars for as long as they stay healthy. The margin for error for very good or elite athletes who don't really know how to hit --Javy Baez, BJ Upton, Trevor Story, etc. -- is much thinner. They tend to be very good, and sometimes superstar level, during the time when their physical skills are at their peak. But when their skills start to diminish, or they get out of rhythm b
Where are Eric Davis and Bo Jackson on that one?
Eric Davis, 1986-89
.281/.377/.537
148 wRC+
38 HR, 57/65 SB, 6.2 bWAR per 162
This wasn't a guy with flares of brilliance. This was a brilliant producer.
Bo obviously was a great athlete with a very suspect hit tool. He never really followed the arc I am describing because he effectively suffered a career ending injury during the peak of his physical ability.
But if he had stayed healthy, he would have been a great candidate to be hitting .210 by age 33, and out of baseball by age 35.
they are letting skenes pitch again tonight and it's the exact same matchup as his last start. he hasn't pitched over 6 innings in his last 6 starts. One really needs to have a lot of faith in the pirates bullpen suddenly figuring things out to lay -125... if the cubs were starting anyone other than kyle "I'm now terrible" hendricks I would snap bet the cubs.

DK has a discount on Skenes to Sale by about $1000 but I can't click that button without volume.

sale is a significantly better dfs play tonight
he's in a tier of his own tonight
skenes is basically a wash with castillo who is 800 cheaper than skenes and then there's a good half dozen viable options who'll get just a point or two less than skenes on average for about 1.5-500 less than skenes
Astros have a scheduled day off in the middle(third whatever) of a 3 game series in Cincy. Yay probably the worst possible MLB city to spend an unnecessary day in. Very vindictive move by the New York *********** in the front office.

They have done nothing to deserve such faith.

Oh, I went with the 75% owned Sale.
Rest of my lineup sucked.
Schwarber hit three HRs last night, and then went rooster again in his first AB today.
Nice start by spaghetti tonight. 2/3 of an inning, 9 earned.
I feel like lindor’s career arc needs a 30 for 30. Ohtani will win the mvp, especially if he somehow goes 50/50 but it’s clearly lindor so far, and probably should be lindor even if Ohtani goes 50/50, and how much of a disaster and a bust he seemed to be to this point and how he’s still somehow underperformed expectations despise being objectively a hall of famer so far….****’s wild bro
A DH shouldn’t be able to win MVP.
Marcell Ozuna should get some 3rd place votes. He’s had a fantastic year.
is "lindor has underachieved" a common take?
he's one of the best players in the game year in year out

Well that’s just completely untrue
In the last 4 years he’s produced a single top 10 WAR season (10th) and 3 of those seasons were spent in the middle of a 341/10 deal where the Mets were a catastrophe
And he was an unmitigated disaster his final year with Cleveland

2020 was a COVID-shortened season, where he had 1.8 fWAR. Hardly a disaster.
Lindor is on the way to the Hall of Fame, dude.
