British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Her Tory councillor husband excusing her on grounds of....having a miscarriage 12 years earlier

I’d post a tweet about the Labour MP for Ilford South who has a portfolio of rental flats that are in a disgusting state, making him the new Rachman , but I can’t find one.

So instead here’s Zahawi also being a disgusting person.

I read some stat that 1/6 Tory voters will literally die in the next 5 years. And that trend will continue after. Seems unless there is some sort of demographic realignment Britain will essentially be a 1 party state moving forward, at least until Muslims reach some sort of demographic threshold they can form their own Islamist party to compete with Labour.

But for the short term I am sure Labour having no internal competition will work out well.

Don't underestimate the ability of the left to divide itself (on this forum as well , many if not most leftists consider Labor too rightwing), or the fact that AFD got the highest share of voters among the under30 in recent local elections.

By definition all Leftists (not including libs) consider Labour far too right wing.

It wouldn't be hugely popular but really the UK needs to go to the IMF for a huge loan as it did in the mid 70s when it was also broke.

Otherwise the current period of austerity will extend from 14 to 19 years and beyond, with no guarantee it will end even then because this generation of politicians of all colours have no idea or no interest in the health of the country.

But presumably they'll be replaced, because the average age at which people switch from Labour to Tory keeps getting lower.

Well, I suppose he's got to say something. And 'I completely support my wife's homicidal racist views' might sound inappropriate.

Leicestershire police said it had voluntarily referred itself to the police watchdog, the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), about the previous incident involving Kohli which was reported to them in July. During that incident it is alleged some of the comments made by the young people were racist.

Asked if detectives were considering a racial motive as part of their murder investigation, a police spokesperson said: “We will be keeping an open mind, but establishing any motive for the assault will form part of inquiries. We are continuing to establish the full circumstances and cannot comment further at this time.”

Leicestershire Live quoted Kohli’s daughter as saying her father had been left seriously injured after a group of young people allegedly first pushed him to the ground and then attacked him.

Speaking before her father died, the daughter said: “They pushed him, they kicked him in the neck, kicked him in the spine.”

Given the likely demographics of the suspects, I would recommend any Brits be very careful about saying anything critical of the murder, lest they receive a knock on the door by the authorities.

Remember, Big Brother is watching

No wdea what you could want to say that could get you into trouble.

I'm going to say that 4 have been released with no further action and a 14 year old boy is being held on suspicion of murder.

France sees Channel migrant deaths as a problem of Britain's making

Makes the point that crackdowns on the gangs is making it even more dangerous - bit like the drugs war

but then basically puts the blame on migrants seeking and finding a much better life in the UK than in france. If so then instead of blaming us maybe they should focus on not making it so horrible for migrants that they risk it all on a dodgy boat.

What are the likely demographics of kids in the UK?

Why should they do anything to keep people in that they want out?

Same reason you haven't been banned from here yet despite being very obviously different to most other posters.

Maybe you should adjust your views about inclusive societies.

They're the ones complaining that these people are leaving because they treat them so badly compared to us.

Well dont moan at us about it, treat them a bit better. It's not like we're some ****ing paradise, it's damning for france if people would rather risk it all in a dodgy boat to live in the uk instead.

They who? a socialist mayor who has been interviewed?

If you made it impossible to gain anything if they reach your shores, ie automatic deportation because France is NOT a country at war so no asylum requests coming from France should ever get a positive answer, and you keep the "seekers" in prison until you tell them that, they stop coming.

The only reason they still come is because you created rewards for them to try, obviously. You can't call people in and complain if they die trying! make it impossible for anyone to gain anything by attempting the channel crossing and they will stop. The death of those people is caused by the promised rewards, it's very clear.

It's all so absurd. We start with "people are fleeing war or other direct threats to their lives", which could make sense.

But the instant they reach a place where they aren't threatened in a lethal way they should lose any addition right to shop around for the best place. And a person claiming people FLEE FRANCE because they are "fleeing death" is insane.

It's all so incredible.

I was referring to the article.

If as it says the french have a problem with people leaving to come here because were so much better then they should ****ing well look at hemselves instead of moaning about how nice the british are

At the article says, they decry the UK promising them rewards as the only reason the whole problem exists, and they are correct

He did condemn the smugglers, but most of his comments focused on the lure of what he views as Britain’s loosely regulated job market, that acts like a magnet, drawing young Eritreans, determined Sudanese, Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis to this coastline, convinced that they if they can just make it across this last, short stretch of water - or even half way across - they’ll end up in a country where they can find work, even without the right paperwork.

Then yes the UK is free to determine it's immigration laws, but then every time someone dies there, it's upon you guys. France at this point shouldn't stop any boat at all and rather buy boats and give them for free to the smugglers

I doubt they will be as extrem as that.

They could be more welcoming

This can't be real... can it?

This is the permanently puzzling thing. Why are people prepared to pay stupid money (pretty much their life savings) to the gangs, and face a high risk of death, not only for themselves but for their children, in the unsound and unfit boats provided by the gangs, in order to escape from... France? I mean -- what? It's not exactly like risking death to get over the Berlin Wall in the old days, is it? And risking your children's lives in that way is particularly reprehensible.

A BBC reporter explained it, to some extent, a while back. He pointed out that these people don't, of course, listen to the BBC or see British TV or the British papers. All they know is what the gangmasters tell them in order to make them part with their money -- probably something to do with free accommodation, jobs, dancing girls, milk and honey, streets paved with gold and a court system that's never going to send them back.
