2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

2020 was a COVID-shortened season, where he had 1.8 fWAR. Hardly a disaster.

Lindor is on the way to the Hall of Fame, dude.

I’d hardly call a net negative offensive season a success

He’s probably going to end up a hall of fame player, no argument here, but him being consistently one of the best players in baseball is only true if you’re saying he’s been one of the best 25 position players every year. Which is true

I forgot Lindor is only 30, and was about to compare him to those philly middle infielder ding dongs from 10 years ago( edit:nm bothered to look it up , Utley and JRoll). He's in good shape and is in the HOF barring anything bad.

Utley's peak was very good. Unfortunately, he was called up really late because the Phillies were worried about his defense and felt that Polanco needed to play after the Rolen trade.

I tend to think Utley should make the HOF, but not Rollins (despite his MVP).

Utley was ridiculous. If Votto is no-brainer HOF, why not Utley?

I don't know what you're looking at. Lindor had a 105 wRC+ and a 104 OPS+ in 2020 with 1.0 oWAR. I don't understand how getting this from a great fielding shortstop is a disaster.

2020-21 was an average stretch of 185 games, but he's otherwise been consistently great. At his worst, he's average.

2015-19: 5.4 bWAR/162
2020-21: 3.6
2022-24: 5.8

Amazing story about how Bobby Cox allowed Jeff Francouer to fake an ankle injury during spring training so that he could play golf with Tiger Woods.

I seriously cannot recommend this highly enough. It's worth clicking the link.

the best jeff francouer story

Utley's prime was very short. He wasn't a top tier player until age 26, and after age 30, he never hit more than 18 HRs or had more than 14 SBs in a season.

I love Votto, and I don't think he's a no-doubt HOF'er

I'll admit his leading the season in OBP for however many years he did it was impressive, and probably the single greatest point in his case.

But first basemen need to bench press a lot more than 300 HR to be in consideration.

He wasn't a top tier player until 26 because that is when the Phillies decided to actually play him.

Utley was a top prospect, but he didn't perform in AAA like a major leaguer until his age-23 season. There's the argument that he was held down too long, but there's another that he was a late bloomer. Same goes for Votto.

lol padres

when u walk 2 guys up 3-0 in the 9th inning, u deserve this fate.

Holy **** Parker Meadows WHAT DID YOU JUST DO

I needed the Padres to complete a couple of nice parlays I had going today.

No joke, I hope their entire team dies in a grease fire the next time they are together in a restaurant. F**king POS losers, DIE!!!!

On a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, losing 3-0.

fwiw it's worth I hope the Tigers die in a plane crash ASAP as well.

Yes I'm still really in a bad mood right now............actually please just nuke all of MLB from orbit so I'm not forced to endure this torture anymore.

What's the record for least runs scored by a player with 200 hits?

I don't know, but the answer's gotta be Ichiro, right?

Good weird question, but no way it's Ichiro. M's raked for a little bit.

I'll play homer with Altuve.

Beyond conscience. Beyond reason. Snap the entire city of Detroit off.

In 2010, Ichiro had 214 hits with 74 runs. Only 101 the year he had 262. M's were rough a lot more of those years than I think you remember. 225 hits and 88 runs in 2009.

Altuve's lowest run total with 200+ hits is 85 in 2014.

I could be very wrong. I don't have Stathead. I'm just glancing at bbref pages.

1989 Kirby Puckett:
215 hits
75 runs

So close

1929 George Sisler:
205 hits
67 runs

We might have a winner.

1976 Willy Montanez:
206 hits
74 runs

1968 Felipe Alou:
210 hits
72 runs

2023 Luis Arraez:
203 hits
71 runs

1926 Eddie Brown:
201 hits
71 runs
