^^Hey Luciom, can you remind me again how smart JD Vance is? Above, same, or below the average MAGA chode?
I have no problem with schools using affirmative action to help people like Vance with humble backgrounds.... but maybe not in law school where these idiots start becoming dangerous. And they got to find smarter people then Vance or the whole thing just looks ridiculous and all you're doing is de-valuing your own department.
Like say the check is for 150, you go with , hey we should only tip 10% it would be 50 bucks already, i think it's enough for service. Answers will tell you the IQ of the people who just ate with you

there's a lot of social factors at play
someone may not want to appear to be a bad tipper and just overtip on purpose
someone could be wholly indifferent to the process and possibly been drinking as well (i often work in evenings, always using some basic math calcultations, i'm a former heavy drinker so have a massive tolerance but a single glass of wine with dinner and i'm not even feeling it, perfectly fine, but the minute i need to pull out the spreadsheets i begin to notice the brain fog
they also don't want to look smart or lame by caring that much - i rarely correct people because that's not a good way to make friends - in fact, i had to teach myself not to intentionally lose to friends who were terrible at strategy games because i thought it'd embarrass them if i won every time
if i'm passing through bologna and we go out for dinner together i'm definitely going to have at least 1-2 bottles and no matter what you say we should tip i'll just autopilot and agree with because i'm going to assume you know what is proper better than i do, i'm genuinely indifferent and don't want to appear cheap or embarass you by pointing out you were wrong or you are cheap yourself
Do you know the IQs of a lot of people with whom you interact? I don't know the exact IQ of any of my friends or acquaintances. For that matter, I don't know my own IQ.
i also think that most people who think they know their iq know it from one of those 5 minute online tests and not actually taking a real test
The biggest determiner of intelligence is how fast you pick up new skills and information. So if you took a group of kids and taught them how to compute percentages, you would be able to quite quickly pick out the most intelligent ones based on how good they were at it after a few days of practice. In the real world, it means the jobs that require the highest levels of intelligence are the ones that require processing lots of new information and learning on the fly. Or jobs that require mastery of very complex subject matter, such that only very efficient learners are able to progress far enough up the curve.
That being said, there could easily be very intelligent people out there who have never bothered to learn heuristics for calculating percentages. Intelligence is not about mastering any specific task, it's about having the ability to master it if motivated to do so.
Just for the avoidance of doubt, I wasn't expressing shock that someone wasn't able to apply heuristics for calculating percentages, I was expressing shock that they weren't able to divide a 3-digit multiple of 10 by 10.
They can be pretty reliable - if you paid for the "full IQ report," I can tell you your IQ.

my ex gf once constantly liked to say that she was smarter than me (very healthy relationship obviously so it's crazy to think she's somehow now an ex), i knew for a fact she wasn't but ignored that and then one day i suggested we both take a test because the frequency and tone of that comment was ramping up over time
she of course freerolled it by having me show my score first and then she quickly closed her window and said it was all bs anyway 😀
she did stop that line of attack though
sadly she was not amenable in other areas either ifykwim
but if you really think those tests are remotely accurate or if it's some kind of joke i'm too stupid to understand i'd like to hear more thoughts on that

I don't think I have ever had dinner at a restaurant with someone who thought that 10% of 150 was $50.
The Sienna college historian survey Presidential rankings includes intelligence as one of the criteria to rank. It matches up with what I think most would guess intuitively. Trump is the lowest of all time, and unless we got any survivors that lived through from the Harding administration, W Bush is the 2nd lowest any of us have witnessed. Obviously they are just asking historians, so it can't be taken that seriously.

Under the (fairly uncontroversial) assumption that higher intelligence leads to better decision making, and the (not controversial for me and others, perhaps for you) assumption that IQ is a good proxy of intelligence, we are always still talking about the ability of achieving goals you decided and think benefit you (and the people you care about), not any other kind of judgement about your actions.
I never suggested that intelligence was unrelated to decision-making. My point in response to DS was that people make bad decisions for many reasons, not just because they fail to spot logical fallacies.
As for Harris, if she had come out activating the 25th many months ago she would be in a much stronger position to win currently, as incumbent president.
If this is your judgment, then you should be arguing that judgment is unrelated to intelligence. If Harris had done what you suggest, it would have been an absolutely awful strategic decision for her.

When we are talking about relatively fine parsing of presidents by IQs, which is what DS was suggesting, that really was my point.

funny you mention that, while looking biden and trumps golf handicap mid debate, i found many rankings of presidents in terms of golf skill that all predated that debate moment by years
that list did jimmy carter dirty and no way ford nor biden should be that high

OK I will do one more. Roccoco. Another who has found many errors. But he screwed up about Bear Bryant, not voting if one candidate murders painlessly and the other tortures, and the recent flawed analogy directed towards Luciom regarding Bernie Madoff.138 seems about right.
