2024 ELECTION THREAD
The next presidential race will be here soon! Please see current Bovada odds. Thoughts?
The crazy thing is that if we look hard enough and long enough, I'm sure we eventually will find some immigrant to the United States who has killed and eaten a dog, a duck from a public park, a Canada goose, etc., which will send the American right into an orgasmic frenzy.
Never mind that if we looked hard enough I'm sure we could find someone who was born in good ole USA #1 who has skull****ed a corpse in the last 72 hours.
Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls Trump In Rage Over Laura Loomer: Report
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called up former President Donald Trump directly in a rage against far-right provocateur Laura Loomer as tensions continue to mount inside the Republican nominee’s circle.
The phone call reportedly came as Loomer threatened to “expose” Greene after the pro-Trump lawmaker called out her “racist” social media post attacking Vice President Kamala Harris’s Indian heritage.
“I’ve spoken with President Trump, but I’m not going to go into the details of our personal conversation,” Greene said on Thursday, according to The Bulwark’s Joe Perticone and Marc Caputo.
On Wednesday, the same day she appeared alongside Trump during 9/11 memorial events in New York, Loomer took to X, formerly Twitter, to mock Harris, suggesting the White House would “smell like curry” if she won.
Greene was quick to reject Loomer’s rhetoric as “appalling and extremely racist,” calling it unrepresentative of Republicans or the MAGA movement. “This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever.”
Loomer unleashed a multi-post rant on X, firstly defending her original attack on Harris and attacking Greene’s personal and professional record, calling her a “raging anti-semite” and “trailer trash harpy.”
After Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also weighed in, urging the former president to distance himself from “toxic” Loomer, the controversial MAGA activist turned on him too, questioning the senator’s commitment to Trump’s vision and his sexuality.
The infighting has surfaced deep internal tensions ahead of the 2024 election.
Loomer has long been a divisive figure within MAGA circles, previously dismissed by Greene as “mentally unstable” and a “documented liar.” Despite Greene’s warnings, Trump has continued to engage both women in his orbit.

Stable genius and friends.
Tariffs only "level the playing field" in terms of increasing profits for domestic producers at the expense of consumers. They rarely work
this is a myth pushed by the old washington consensus in order to open up markets for our companies all over the world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington...
hence why we gave so much economic aid to everyone, oh you need 2 billion for a bridge? just follow washington consensus and we'll give it to you - it was all part of our economic hitmen policies - within a few years of dropping tariffs, hundreds of their local businesses are bankrupted and purchased by the global conglomerates which killed them to be used as localized production and distribution networks of the global product instead of their own
this is why you'll find coca cola and hershey bars are found in every country across the world and you'll rarely come across any local products
you can literally track when IMF/world bank began doing this to africa and when they began pivoting from the USA to China which put in no such conditions
remember all the constant news coverage about how all those stupid africans were idiotically taking chinese aid instead of ours and we explained it was done due to bribery and corruption and now who would save the hapless africans from the Chinese? it turns out that those african countries were onto something and while china made sure they got theirs, they didn't enforce economic policy to enforce modern day mercantilism on them, they just wanted access to resources, didn't care about bulldozing all local companies so more bottles of cocacola could be sold
majority of the world has tariffs in place, china, which has the fastest economic growth in the history of the world did it largely on the strength of tariffs ensuring foreign products would be at such artificially high prices that a nascent domestic industry could initially find a gap in the budget category and over time as they business grew and developed finally begin making higher quality products that could compete with the top brands globally
in the early years of smartphones, the chinese ones were utter crap but because an iphone or samsung galaxy cost 2x more than they should, a bunch of chinese brands were able to find a niche as budget providers - a decade later they find parity with the top global brands to now having over half of global market share
weird though that we don't really have any of those phones in the USA
now that you mention it, we don't have any chinese cars either, nor french or italian cars either
this isn't due to the government so much as the private industry excludes them - vast majority of sales of both those products in the United States come from dealer networks - you buy your car from the dealer just as you get your phone from your carrier and they have exclusivity deals
let's see what verizon has
3 companies
apple
samsung
google (motorola is owned by google)
amazon doesn't really count, that's just for kindles
this isn't an accident, verizon isn't just trying to keep things simple, google and samsung have exclusivity deals with them - effectively doing the same work as tariffs
same thing with cars, there's no regulatory reason why it's so difficult to buy a byd or citroen other than that privately owned distribution networks collude to ensure no new ones arrive
and in some instances the corruption of our government even mandates that stuff, in many states it is illegal to purchase a car direct from the manufacturer to ensure we provide room for middle men in dealerships which is far worse than a tariff - this is why getting a hold of a tesla proves very difficult for some people in some states
there was perhaps a time when we were the cheapest and most efficient manufacturer and shipping logistics company in the world where we would thrive in a tariffless world and really pushed them as a result - those days are long gone and it's time to re-evaluate our priors and stop shooting ourselves in the foot as we ironically are falling for the same lie we invented to exploit others
the entire world uses tariffs simply because they are very effective
[b]I'm not in ohio and have very little knowledge about what is going on there. I've never been to Haiti either and I'm not sure if eating cats or dogs is something they do. I have been to parts of Asia where eating dog isn't uncommon so I know this happens in other countries.
Fair enough. And we certainly can't draw inferences from city officials saying that there have been no credible reports of people eating pets. Shrug.
I haven't spent much time in rural America. You see a lot of stuff on TV about inbreeding in these communities. I don't know if this explains low rural achievement, low cognitive abilities in rural populations and poor health outcomes in rural America. All I know is it would be totally fine for a presidential candidate to ramble about low IQ inbred rurals in a presidential debate.
The crazy thing is that if we look hard enough and long enough, I'm sure we eventually will find some immigrant to the United States who has killed and eaten a dog, a duck from a public park, a Canada goose, etc., which will send the American right into an orgasmic frenzy.

i'm really surprised they haven't started talking about fishing yet in all seriousness
a highly disproportionate amount of people caught by game wardens exceeding limit regulations are immigrants
on the fishing forums i'm at, you commonly see threads where someone uploads pictures and video of going fishing and seeing immigrants keeping fish that can't be kept and trying to hide them in the rocks and stuff - this has been going on for years with the "immigrants are taking all the fish"
that's also something that was played up a lot in brexit, that the poles were eating all the carp
i guess keeping threatened species of fish or taking 20 when the legal limit is 3 isn't as shocking as eating geese

that's also
For better or worse, people don't feel the same way about fish as they do pets. For most people, this falls into the same category as hunting deer out of season.
That is -- not great, but also not traumatizing to think about. Also, a picture of someone carrying a large string of fish isn't that easy to turn into a meme.
The people claiming that "they are eating pets" is racism went on for like 3+ years claiming the whole world got wrecked by covid because chinese people ate live bats
What Lucium said is not an analogy. He is making the point that if you made a venn diagram of the people saying "eating pets is racist" and "covid started because chinese people eat bats" you'd have a near perfect circle. He is highlighting the idea that these people are calling themselves racist.

And you can tell from photos that these people are immigrants?

You can infer whatever you'd like. My point is that this is another nothingburger. Start attacking his policy and not his personality if you want to have a real conversation in a politics thread.
If trump said he was going to use tax payer funds to pay off the student loans of those who don't eat pets then I think it would rise to the level of newsworthy.
So that's a "no," then. Trump engaging in gutter racist demagoguery is something you're basically ambivalent about.
As lucium pointed out, Dems were ok blaming chinese people for millions of deaths for eating animals we don't usually eat, but dems are unraveling because trump said haitian immigrants are eating other animals we don't see as something to eat.
Get your story straight.

It's never too late to walk away and stop licking the slime off Trump's boots, FYI.
Of course those words could never hurt you, you're not the target of them. This is called privilege.
If kamala, or another candidate, said people with the size of shoe I have, my race, my religion, my height, my nationality, my heritage or any other identifying thing about me said we eat dogs but she was the candidate I thought was better for me, my family, the poor, the middle class, the rich and America as a whole long-term I'd still vote for her.
The things a politician has or could reasonable say can't hurt me because their actions/policies could hurt or help me far more than their words.
I completely understand that it is far easier to attack trump on him being a big meany than attacking his policies, but you need to spend your time telling other people that and less time trying to convince me. I care too much about Americas future to consider a politician being mean or nice.

He is drawing an idiotic parallel between people expressing concern about the possibility of zoonotic transmission of diseases in unregulated wet markets in China and people expressing concern about obviously false accusations about Haitian immigrants eating the pets of U.S. residents.
There were (and continue to be) a lot of public health officials who are concerned about the former w/r/t to wet markets all around the world. As far as I know, no rational person is concerned about the latter.
Also, this is all pretty rich coming from a supporter of a guy who did everything in his power to associate COVID with Chinese people generally.

blahblah getting ready to post in this thread:
What’s your power rankings on worst posters in this forum between bahahaha, luciom, PB, lozen, and that mongo guy?

This has nothing to do with whether Trump is a "meany" or not. It has to do with whether he respects people and whether he wants to unfairly engender animus against particular groups of people. Believe it or not, that matters when assessing what you can expect from a candidate in terms of policy.
What’s your power rankings on worst posters in this forum between bahahaha, luciom, PB, lozen, and that mongo guy?
This is not going to be a particularly popular view, I don't consider Luciom a bad poster - I wouldn't call someone a bad poster just because I disagree with their opinions. He doesn't engage in the sort of brain****ery that makes the others in that list horrible.
The rest are all bottom of the barrel in their own special ways, so it's hard to rank them. There are a couple you're missing too.
