2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
manny ramirez
I would guess Matt Kemp or Gary Sheffield.
Altuve fouls a ball off his toe while in the box. Of course the dumb ass homeplate ump doesn't see it. So Altuve proceeds to take his shoe and sock off to show him the scuff mark.
astros imploding in extras
I’m as despondent as I’ve ever been about a Braves playoff race, at least since Covid.
Down 2 games to the Mets for the last wild card spot. The Phillies, led by Bryce Harper (ugh) and my fantasy standout Zack Wheeler, looking like the class of MLB.
Soooooo many injuries. Maybe it’s looking different if we had a full season of Spencer Strider, Acuña, Albies, Riley, etc etc. If, if, if. At least Sale is a lock for the Cy Young.
Still, if there’s one thing I can count on, it’s that the Mets could still choke, on the biggest possible stage, at the highest leverage moment. It’s been this way for basically my entire lifetime.
Then take a page out of the Phillies’ book, and run with the horseshoe up our ass for the playoffs.
That’s the only hope I have to keep watching.

Altuve has the record for doing that now.
Like Happy Gilmore was the only guy who ever took his skate off and tried to stab somebody.
Shitty luck all season for the Braves with the injuries, but they'll be at the top of the mix for years to come.
I always forget about Sheffield with the Doyer. Peak roid era, not that he needed it or even certainly used.
Sheffield is the answer I got trying to track it down. .643 I think it was. Manny didn't qualify with that 1/3 season his first year with the team, when he slugged .743 but with < 200 ABs. (The all-time Dodger record pretty sure is Duke Snider, at .647.)
I have an unconfirmed sick memory of Manny breaking into the big leagues for his first cup of tea late in September. New Yorker Manny playing against the Yanks at Yankee Stadium, hit a ground rule double, two homers, and about 5 foul homers in the game. He kept hitting foul homers followed by fair homers. It was unreal. On the ground rule double he thought it was a homer and ran all the way around tipping his hat and stuff to his homies up in the stands going wild. It was a sick break-in to the Big Show. It was perhaps an omen, a harbinger and a foreshadowing of the greatness and the strangeness to come. 😀
Elly got old fast or is tired. His speed numbers died. In his last 46 games, nearly a third of a season, he's 9-for-16 in steals with one triple. Before that he was 55-for-64 in steals (half a steal per game down to 1/5, and nearly 86% success down to 56%), and 7 triples. Did he tweak a wheel? Runs scored seems too, too low. Limping in to 100 with this amount of XBHs, improved OB% and speed. I demand 120 runs or so.
it's nes 8bit quality but it sure does look here like that ball did indeed hit his foot
I love waking up knowing Tarik Skubal is taking the mound later in the day.

Probably a minor leg issue going on. Or he got caught a few times and lost his confidence and timing. The runs scored issue is something to blame the hitters that follow him in the order for.
Ohtani is 26-for-26 in steals over the last few months last caught July 22. That list starts to get super exclusive at about 36 straight, getting into the top 10 in history.
Seattle is 50/50 to finish under .500. What a ****ing meltdown with that horrible offense and the best pitching staff in beisbol. Best team era, WHIP, OBA, ER. Gjge M's.

They already did that in 2021.
2 home runs in 10 games. Pretty fun sweat. Would suck if he ends on 49 home runs. The steals are a lock.
50/50 is something nobody has even thought about in ages, I thought maybe Arod had a chance when he was young but then he stopped running. Then Ohtani just suddenly started running like crazy out of nowhere halfway through the season.
Six against the Rockies and they finish at Coors. If he can't homer twice then he legit didn't get there.
Twins shutdown continues. All tied up with Tiggies.
