2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Walker and Helton were very good hitters like I said. But they were both a clear step down power wise from someone like a Carlos Delgado.

I mean, Coors has been the best hitters park for like 27 years in a row or something, and in that time I'm guessing there's been about 15 players to have a 50 home run season, and more than 25 total 50 homer seasons. They haven't had a 50 homer guy yet.

Did a quick count and starting from 1995 there have been 35 seasons of 50+ home runs. Prior to that yea

Man, I loved Delgado. Such a bummer that his career ended abruptly and fairly young. Bad hip issues, similar to another case -- Albert Belle. Both were super world-class sluggers. Not in the Hall is a joke pretty much, isn't it? I guess averaging nearly 40 homers and 120 RBIs over a 10 years stretch doesn't measure up. Throwing in 40 double seasons and terrific slugging and OPS. Slugging .556 career. Hello Willie Mays and Hank Aaron.

He didn't get the ABs to put up the staggering raw totals he was headed for. A little similar to Gehrig in that he wasn't getting ABs until he was 24 and was abruptly ended at 36. What Delgado did in between was first ballot Hall.

There’s an argument that they’re the best team ITL right ****ing now.

And there’s zero argument that Skubz is the best pitcher on the planet.

mlb.tv plays the same commercial every half inning. It's all part of their 79-point plan to make their product unavailable and unwatchable to fans.

A few things work against Delgado. He put up his numbers in years where those numbers didn't stand out as much. He did them all playing for Toronto and they were never a real contending team during those years because the AL East was so strong. And he didn't provide any defense or speed. So he flew under the radar and then because his career ended suddenly he didn't hit the major power hitter career milestones.

The Blue Jays had 3 different first baseman in the 90s who all didn't make the hall but all very good careers. McGriff, Olerud, Delgado. Between the 3 of them, 6,767 hits. 1221 home runs.

Has Ohtani just had the greatest 8 game stretch in history?

6 home runs
8 stolen bases
6 doubles
20 RBI
24 hits
.705 BA
1.410 SLG
2.115 OPS

10 outs made (11 if you include getting thrown out at 3rd trying for a triple)

He'll need 6 hits in the last 2 games for one more big milestone, 200 hits.

Someone must have told Ohtani he might win the triple crown if he averages four hits a night for the last two weeks.

24 hits in hits last 8 games. I wonder what the 8 game record is. 20 rbi's in 8 games also seems like a possible record.

The Twins collapse is almost complete.

MN sports are something else. At least they find new exciting ways to suck compared to some teams that are just awful all the time.

408 total bases is nuts. The only people ahead of that are steroid freaks and guys who died a hundred years ago.

free grear!

The only thing that reminds me of this Ohtani super heater was George Brett in the summer of '80. You just couldn't believe those box scores coming in, going from a rash of 2 hit games to 3 hit games to 4 hit games then a 5 hit game. It went on for months. Looks like he got up to about .407 in late august. For 3 consecutive months he hit .470, .490, and .430. You were incredulous looking at the box scores.

I took a quick look through some seasons.

2004 Ichiro (264 hits)
1980 Brett (.390 avg)
2000 Erstad (240 hits)
1973 Rose (238 hits)
1941 Dimaggio (56 game hit streak)
1994 Tony Gwynn (.394)
1988 Kirby Puckett (234 hits)
1941 Ted Williams (.406)

Couldn't find anything even close to 24 hits in 8 games during those seasons. Ichiro was the closest with 27 hits in 10 games, but his best games come at the beginning and end of that 10 game stretch, so his best 8 game stretch was only 18. Puckett also had an 18 hit stretch for 8 games.

Johnny Burnett had a 9 hit game in 1932. Stretched out to 8 games his best was 19.

Obviously MLB history is massive, so looking through only a few seasons is only the tip of the iceberg.

I haven’t done any digging into the game logs but bonds had 4 straight full seasons with an obp over .500, 1 of which was over .600, and a season where he hit 73 homers, and you mean to tell me in no stretch of those 4 years was 8 consecutive games surpassing Ohtani?

I definitely call bullshit

5/17/01-5/24/01:

34 plate appearances
9 walks
25 qualified plate appearances
14 hits
10 homers

Only game 4 of the season for me here, the least since I moved to Chicago in 2018 (other than 2020 obv). Been to 2 in St Louis and 1 in Cincy.

Still believe this is game 90 for me at Wrigley.

Yankees still playing Judge every day for all of Aug and Sep. Can't wait for the the "unlucky" comments when the giant CFer hurts his wooky in the playoffs.

Platinum sombrero today. Sometimes I know what I'm talking about.

24 hits in 8 games isn't even a Dodgers record although you have to go way back in time according to a Dodgers SB Nation blog:

With 24 hits over his last eight games, Ohtani has the third-best streak in Dodgers history. Infielder Jimmy Johnston’s best eight-game streak for Brooklyn in 1923 featured 26 hits, and within was a 24-for-29 stretch (current Ohtani but with five fewer outs!), and infielder Milt Stock got to 25 hits over eight games in 1925.

I saw a random tweet that said 2019 Charlie Blackmon and 2007 Kenny Lofton had 24 hits in 8 games. No idea if that's accurate and don't care to check but no reason for me to doubt it.

Didn't Trevor Bauer hit that chick at least 24 times in a night too?

24 hits over 8 dames.

Mod Note: Please no more hitting women jokes.

How about 48 total bases in 8 games?

Ok Bonds during that 8 games
.508 BA, .619 OBP, 1.667 SLG

Ohtani. .706 BA, .737 OBP, 1.412 SLG.

Pretty tight! Ohtani also has 8 SB but was thrown out once trying for a triple.

Bonds had 1 SB and 1 CS

Matter of perspective on what you value I guess

Don’t get me wrong, Ohtani has been nuts, and I made no real effort to scan through bonds’ game logs, but I have a hard time accepting that Ohtani has been the head and shoulders goat these last couple weeks
