Austin, TX Area Poker
This thread is for discussion of news/events in the Austin area, as well as a place to ask questions about poker in the area. This is also the place for discussions about the smaller card rooms in the area that do not warrant an individual venue thread.
Huge weekend going down Sep 18th-22nd at Lodge Card Club.
Can check out all the info here:
Wow, you guys better get some more tables and chairs! I'm tempted to make the trip from Fort Worth. Sounds like a good time.
Haha yeah I imagine we are gonna be pushing capacity for this one.
Thanks for the Heads Up for the Taj Mahal
Have booked a Suite for the family and Grandkids.
Plan is for Papa to gambool and the family will do stuff in Austin and Round Rock.
Looking forward to the Tournament and the games :p
I believe it opens at 9 pm Wed for the Thur am flight.
The promo wars in Austin between The Lodge and TCH have been great for the players
Not in Austin afaik, but the issue I am hearing about in some locations is more and more shady stuff is happening. Mostly things like player teams but also some talk that some rooms or at least some staff in on it
I am hearing more and more players saying they won’t play “there” again but none of this is actual first hand knowledge. Probably typical uncontrolled greed killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
Is the main 2/5 Hold'em game that usually runs in Austin just the one at TCH? What is max buy in?
Does it play more like a 5/10 or bigger the way people always talk about low stakes in Texas?
What about the 1/2/5 PLO at the Lodge?
Bigger games in the area are mostly stream games or private?
Thanks for the info!

This team play thing in cash games seems to be catching on, and becoming less "secretive" as it probably has been for decades. With so many people not really receiving repercussions for what could be construed as cheating, the population of willing participants is growing. I have a good friend who makes several circuit stops across WSOP and other series, and after only one or two years of being friendly and noticed as a grinder, he was just recently asked if he "wanted in." He declined, AFAIK, but for them to even initiate that conversation says something to me, considering my friend doesn't come across as a shady character.
Was in a room this weekend that has slot machines. I had always heard they were still illegal in Texas. I felt a little sketch.
Does anyone know if they are legal in any form? They said something about 30 percent going to charity.

headed to austin for a few weeks around march or so
no money in austin poker, everyone solid?
I saw a 15/30 or 20/40 lhe game on poker atlas at the lodge a few weeks ago. Was that a one time thing or does it go on occasion?
Can we get a WSOP circuit stop anywhere in Texas?
Doug? You working on it, right?
I'm guessing this won't happen until A) There is a Caesars CASINO in Texas
B) a deal is struck with Oklahoma room and
C) most importantly, there is a gaming commission in place in Texas. No way they come into an uncommissioned state.

They're trying to advertise LHE games and I think they've even gone as far as to say LHE games won't pay hourly fees, but to my knowledge no games have actually run yet.

AFAIK slots are only legal on the indi@n casino out in big bend. Even the Indian casino north of Houston plays electronic bingo that looks like slots.
If the are in a gray market poker room, that room has left the gray and is well into the illegal.

I guess it could just be what you said. Idk. I don't play them.

idk about texas but in some states the slots have a "preview" button where the rng is spun before you actually pull the lever and you can see what the result of the next spin will be beforehand - it's obviously an intentionally tedious process
but because of that, it is now classified as "a game of skill" instead of one based on luck and then is no longer gambling but no different from entering a chess or golf tourney and paying the entry fee
but the degenerates don't want to spend time bothering to see what the next result will be and passing on it, they are just going to insert their monies and hope to hit a big jackpot, because they plan on hitting the lever hundreds of times anyway and aren't going to be deterred by seeing the next spin is a loser as a result
The ones around Austin give "scratch off tickets" and they claim it's no different than a lottery. They refer to them as "Sweepstakes" machines not slot machines.
Bullets in south Austin and Red Star at 183/Burnet both have them, I'm not aware of any other rooms that do.
One of the managers at Bullets used to own several rooms around the area and is now a manager so I'm assuming his got closed. The ones in Austin pop up and shut down all the time. I was approached to invest in a couple but passed.
