2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
Shwarber WAR + Ozuna WAR don't = Ohtani WAR
Schwarber + Ozuna + Arraez still falls short.
Manfred gets to decide seeding if the dbacks are elimiminated and it is just barve Met. Games aren't going to happen monday.
it should be happening. looks like they will need to split the doubleheader for both teams to get in. which probably means they will make a gentleman's agreement for each team to forfeit one of the games and they both get in (and no doubt manfred will sign off on this). so you're right, it probably isn't happening.
if the mets had lost today, that would have been another story...
not sure why cleveland-houston is still showing as being in a rain delay. the game is meaningless and both teams have to travel for their Tuesday playoff game. call the game already. lol mlb, lol manfred.

Yankees also had an hour and change rain delay for their meaningless game vs the Pirates.
The talking heads on baseball tonight are claiming each team should
OK we're all rooting for Brave sweep Monday(sans wholesome mod who **** on my rare funny joke about Bauer) get the dbacks and ATL in there.
Don't like Astros getting stuck against Ragans and Lugo. Good move trading Aroldis Chapman for Ragans ****ers.
Watching MLB big inning along with Redzone was pretty funny. Had it muted most of the time but whenever I heard the narrator guy chimed him he sounded like you're rambling drunk uncle
Elly tripled in his last AB of the year to make the 25 HR, 35 double, 10 triple club. Somehow I was pulling for that exact club for him all year.
who is winning NL roy?
have a bet on skenes from 3 months ago my friend told me to bet, dont follow MLB because the excitement is too much for me
I'm a SD homer so I think Merrill should win ROY but Skenes will probably get it. Merrill has had an amazing year, far exceeding even the most optimistic expectations going into the season. He had never played CF before in his life, at any level, and was told to move there when spring training started. He looked like a natural all year. Hit around .300 all year as an every day player with more power than expected as well. And I know that statistically there's no such thing as a clutch hitter but this kid came up big in a bunch of late inning situations with the game on the line. There was a 1 or 2 week stretch late in the season where it seemed like he was always up with the game on the line in the 8th or 9th inning and got it done on multiple occasions.

It does appear the Dbacks may be screwed.
Whichever team wins game 1 tomorrow can just rest their starters for game 2.

I had zero opinion nor stated anything at all about your joke txdome.
But yes it is rare that you do make a good post; I can agree with that.
Rooting for the Mets because I want to see Frank Flemming continue living.
**** the Pirates forever. Wouldn't feel bad if Skenes blows out in the offseason.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa is out of the lineup for the final game of the regular season against the New York Yankees. Ethan Hullihen reported that the Pirates' utility infielder was four plate appearances away from earning a $250,000 bonus, which comes on the heels of former first baseman Rowdy Tellez, being designated for assignment when he was four at-bats away from a $200,000 bonus.
Kiner-Falefa made 7.5 million this year. He'll make 7.5 million again next year. A typical working class or even maybe upper middle class person who just retired after 50 years of working didn't make that much money in their entire life.
Rowdy Tellez made 3.2 million this year. He was a negative WAR player on a losing team. He now has no contract and his future earnings are questionable. He'll still possibly manage to make more money in future baseball earnings that a typical person makes in a lifetime, but it's also possible he's on the verge of being done after back to back negative WAR seasons.
I don't feel emotion about what happened at all. It's true that Tellez very easily could have gotten 4 more PA's, but as a business decision it would make little sense to send him out there out of charity. If the team was actually contending for something and he was a player where sitting him out hurt them in any way, then I agree it would be appalling.
I'm open to having my mind changed.
Pirates run a business. Not a charity.
LOLOLOL thinking otherwise.
It's just the latest confirmation for Pittsburgh fans that after for all intents and purposes not having an MLB team in town for like 30 years, Nutting isn't intent on changing that anytime soon. Don't particularly care about those players missing out on a couple hundert k, but this guy running a corporate welfare scam when the community could actually have a real baseball team that still makes money hand over fist is awful. I hope Nutting dies a painful, preferably violent death soon.

In a vacuum you're right. Why pay IKF 250k to play a meaningless game.
But no owner who actually wants to win long term does **** like this. They think of the big picture.
If Tellez sucked so bad then cut him a month ago don't do petty **** like this.
And you're right these players make a ton of money. But the owners are billionaires. They can beat a **** house owner like the Pirates have that don't even try to win. And they still make tons of money then flip the team for 10x profit a decade later. It's not like the money would be coming from a small business or they said we're cutting Tellez so we're gonna give away 250k worth of food to the fans at the next game.
But I guess you're right. If you give zero ****s about winning it actually makes business sense to do stuff like this bc nobody ever wants to play there anyway.
We've seen dirtbags owners and really nice owners. Fisher is a trust fund scumbag who screwed the fans, wants a tax payer funded stadium and can't even give concession workers some severance pay who have been there for ages.
Then you have Mark Cuban who sells a big chunk of the Mavs and gives a lot of money to long term employees after the sale. He always tried to win. Of course when he tried to buy an MLB team the league told him to pound sand.
Yeah the past 10 days for me have been just an absolute nightmare sports wise.
Giants fire Farhan and hire Posey?
Ok then

Even as a purely business decision, it's short-sighted. If I was a lower-tier free agent, I sure wouldn't want to sign an incentive-laden deal with a team with a reputation now for releasing anyone close to hitting those incentives. Not only are you probably taking less guaranteed and then not getting the expected payoff for successfully betting on yourself, but you're putting a huge target on your back for getting released, even ahead of worse players who are on fully-guaranteed deals.
For a low-budget team whose best chance of winning usually involves signing a bunch of those guys and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, getting that kind of reputation isn't going to be good for business in the long run. You might save a few bucks today, but then end up having to pay more to get free agents to sign with you in the future, not to mention the impact on the field if the higher-quality guys start going elsewhere.
Not paying these two players of what is akin to us ripping out a $20 from our wallets and giving it to somebody is why you do it. Horrible PR for an organization that has been nothing but cheap and uncompetitive.
