Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths): RIP Hank Aaron and Willie Mays
When an interviewer told Mr. Heller that he had never written anything as good as ''Catch-22,'' the author shot back, ''Who has?''
The great Maggie Smith. Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, and a host of great films.

If you've never seen The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie or Smith's Desdemona in Olivier's Othello, you're missing out.
And I loved listening to her on chat shows. So damn funny.
A true legend. RIP

I've seen one, and I've read both. Will try to find that Othello.

Her sparring with Michael Caine in California Suite is just fantastic. Deservedly won an Oscar for that role.
Kris Kristofferson.
Knew enough not to name it "Bobby McGee and I" as stodgy English professors would say.

goddammit....this one hurts. He has long been a hero of mine. And not just because of his music. What man.
RIP
John Ashton, 78
Long time character actor is movies like Midnight Run and the Beverly Hills Cop movies.
Damn...loved watching him play
voting Rose into the HOF now is like moving bodies between graveyards
could have happened when the celebrated person was still around to bask in the reverence
but it didn't
and they chose that
Dikembe Mutombo far too young at 58. Not only a hell of a player, but his personality, advocacy, and generosity was a model.

So on the days he didn't bet on the Reds, he put in the shitty pitchers and gave the stars an off day?
I'm not a big "integrity of the Game" guy, but Rose should never be in the HOF. His on the field performance is in the record books. That's all he gets.
and the hits keep on coming...

I know the reasons for keeping him out, but now that he's dead, put him in there with Joe Jackson.

The great Luis Tiant. I saw him pitch at Fenway in the first time I was there. During his windup, he would look away from the plate, sometimes to dead center. Years later I ran into him at the local grocery store where he was signing books. A real gentleman and snazzy dresser.

I loved that crazy windup. On a related note, the Red Sox Jose Iglesias is having a great post season. For the Mets.
Liam Payne, 31
Former member of super boy band One Direction, Payne died after falling from a 3rd floor hotel balcony in Argentina.
What a stupid way to die so young.
