Best Wrestling Promos

The promo below is a fun watch, but reading the transcript really adds some perspective.

Mean Gene: What happened tonight?

Ultimate Warrior: What happened tonight was already written, Hulk Hogan. It was written a long time ago when the warriors that came before me and you—Yes, I'll do it, and what me must do is beyond us, Hulk Hogan! I stood with my back to you, Hulk Hogan, and I knew you were not dumb! But Hulk Hogan, when I looked into your eyes, I saw walls; walls filled with fear; fear that ran thick through you, Hulk Hogan. At Royal Rumble, I needed no friends, I needed to partners. Every man stands by himself like the Ultimate Warrior. Always has! But Hulk Hogan, you still do not understand. You still have mistrust. I need not your protection, Hulk Hogan. Look on the wall of the Joe Louis Arena! The warriors that could not come have attached theirselves to the outer structure, Hulk Hogan. They're seeping through; feeling me; feeding me with the power to survive. They ride on my back for my protection! I need not you, Hulk Hogan. And if you look closer you will notice red and yellow, the colors of Hulkamania. Hulkamaniacs—they're questioning: Do you have, Hulk Hogan, what it takes to be the most powerful force in the entire universe?! Hulk Hogan, look at me, Hulk Hogan. Look at me! Without the pain, Hulk Hogan; the desire to withstand the pain and give you the utmost in battle and combat at WrestleMania 6 still stands, Hulk Hogan, for I am the chosen one.

Mean Gene: I get the impression that we've got a loose cannon on our hands...

And just when you thought they couldn't go at the Hulkster any harder.

Savage was always great at being over the top. A favorite rib of the boys in the back was handing over a random prop just before an interview, such as a coffee creamer:

But if we’re talking the actual effectiveness of a promo, Jake the Snake was a true gangster. He didn’t need to scream at the top of his lungs because everyone listened when Jake spoke. His whispery voice and steely stare could reach inside your chest and grip your soul.

A lot of guys say things like, “I’m gonna take you to the depths of hell,” but only a few made you actually believe it. With Jake, it always felt real:

When Booker T accidently said the N word to Mean Gene.

Ric Flair's date with Precious

Can you post some of the worst ones?

Dusty Rhodes's "Hard Times" promo is a classic.

As is virtually every promo from Ric Flair in his prime.

Or the Sheik

I feel like The Rock was really good at promos. Stone Cold Steve Austin wasn't bad either.

Or if you want to go even further back, Superstar Billy Graham.

He was pretty good in The Peanut Butter Falcon too. I was never a big Jake the Snake fan growing up, but yeah, he had that persona down. Remember Alice Cooper in his corner at WrestleMania 3? What an event! The WWF will never be the same. I lost interest around '94 and never got back into it. I tried a few times, but the magic wasn't there.

Might as well just make this a thread for random wrestling stuff.

From USA Up All Night. This one is a little awkward. Rhonda was the best.

I showed my 8-year-old son these and started watching some old Royal Rumbles and what not and now he’s amped up on it. Gave himself the wrestling name “Poop on the Seat” and his signature move is passing gas to make you dizzy and lightheaded. I think the name needs some revision.

Anywho, where can I get some old seasons of WWF stuff? I know I can watch YouTube videos here and there but if we want to follow the drama and nonsense that comes with it, where can we find that?

There's a bunch of stuff on Peacock; big events and some of the old weekly shows. It might be hard to follow the storylines without looking up what to watch next. When I was a kid, I tuned in every week.

Start him off with this and everything else will fall into place over time.

The best heel.

Peacock has the rights to the wwe collection. Pay Per Views, weekly tv shows, and other content are all available.

Google is your best resource for watch order on PPVs. They typically have enough backstory for the big matches, and smaller matches didn't always have a backstory. Saturday night's main event was the primary show for awhile, then there was a Saturday morning show (maybe the same one in a different time slot, I don't recall).

In January of 1993, they debuted Monday Night Raw, a new weekly "live" show (live is debatable as it was filmed in front of a live audience but often filmed multiple weeks in a single night, meaning it wasn't technically live each week).

The late 80s/early 90s were heavy on Hulk Hogan, the "Real American Hero". It was fun as a kid to see him overcome the larger opponents (King Kong Bundy, Andre the Giant, Earthquake, etc). The mid 90s were rough, and that's when WCW peaked and nearly ended WWE, allegedly. The late 90s and Monday night wars saw both companies shine, but Vince and WWE ended up winning and eventually bought out WCW.

The 2000s continued the attitude era, altho that eventually turned into the PG era due to advertisers.

The PPVs were the main shows for quite awhile. Raw first started with few matches of interest, mostly having a big name vs a no-name for the first few years with some main event type matches. There should be a list somewhere with the highlights of good Raw episodes to watch (I know the 2nd episode has a loser leaves the wwe match between Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect, for example).

I was a huge wrestling fan as a kid. Still like watching the early stuff, and actually started a watch from the beginning recently (ppvs, Raw, and smackdown, another weekly tv show, when it starts) in chronological order. I don't have time to include Saturday night's main event or other programs, as there is just too much content to watch it all. I feel these will give me the most exposure.

If your son has a favorite wrestler, I'd be happy to share some high points or shows that feature that person or their storyline if you'd like.

The best heel.

Roddy was incredible. Had charisma, played the villain well, and fans loved him whether he was a heel or a good guy.

Great, thank you! We have Peacock so we’ll watch some old episodes until he finds a favorite.
