New York Mets: We ****ing Quit

New York Mets: We ****ing Quit

Bread's Projected 25-man Roster:

C: Schneider
1B: Delgado
2B: Castillo
3B: Wright
SS: Reyes
LF: Murphy
CF: Beltran
RF: Church

Bench: Castro(R), Cora(L), Tatis(R), Reed(L), Pagan(S)
(yes Pagan bitches! ~ Marlon Anderson gets cut imo)

Rotation:
1 - Santana
2 - Perez
3 - Pelfrey
4 - Maine
5 - Redding

Bullpen:
CL: K-Rod
RH: Putz
LH: Feliciano
RH: Green
RH: Stokes
RH: Sanchez
RH: O'Day (darkhorse rule V pick imo)

To sum up my thoughts on the offseason real quick: I like the huge change in the bullpen. I like that Castillo reported to ST in great shape and is on fire for his first 5 at-bats. I like that Omar has brought in a little extra SP depth (Redding, Garcia, Livan + Niese, Parnell, Figueroa and Armas still). I don't like that they didn't give Lowe that extra year he wanted.

Anyway, spring training has started. The season is right around the corner. Discuss.

The 2024 New York Mets have to be one of the most ridiculous teams I have ever seen in my life in the history of sports.

Because the world of sports analysis has become extremely unintelligent, for Mets fans and sports fans in general the consensus has been "me pound chest , me angry mets no get yomomoto, me angry yankees get soto, me angry cohen no spend money and me upset me never heard of starting pitchers Mets be bad and go 60-102. " But as someone who understands that starting pitcher depth and bullpen depth are more important than name starting pitchers in their 40's, I was happy with Stearn's moves, I was happy they traded away Scherzer and Verlander for prospects last yr, and in this era of 6 teams per league in the playoffs, there was really no reason to feel the Mets couldn't be competitive, betting markets and BaseballProspectus agreed as usual, the only people who didn't agree were all of the baseball world, because lolmets.

And what I have seen is astonishing to me. Every game where they trail by a run all game, the bullpen and starters pitch excellent and they lose by a run. Every game when they are up by 4 runs, at some point they give up 5. Every game where they trail by 6 runs, they come back to lose by 1 or 2. The amount of tough luck outs and soft hits from opponents both seem out of line as well. I write this after tonight's 8-7 loss to the Giants where the B9 was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen, and anyone who hasn't watched it should. It's the 2024 Mets in a nut shell. I don't believe "clutch" exists in the manner fans think it does. But this season tests my limits. It feels not like just a bad team, but more like one of those bad runs at poker that make you question your sanity or if a 1-2 home game is beatable, lol.

When I watched the Mets stat 11-1 in i think it was 2018, I was not very surprised they fell off because it seemed like they were winning through black magic and felt like a weaker team than most of their opponents. This team feels like the opposite, they feel like equal or better team than most opponents with more solid at bats and just somehow always losing the game, not an amazing team like Atlanta or LA or anything, just a solid one that should win more than not.

I'm writing this to ask the opinions of other non results-oriented people if they see what I see or what. After 50 games, is it possible that this is just somehow an incredibly anti-clutch group of players? Or do they just suck and my analysis is off? I've never been much of an optimist, but I've found myself telling other Mets fans all season, "this team looks good to me, theyll be fine" and getting laughed at. It's made this season one of the most annoying ones in recent memory.

Although "ridiculousness" seems to be unusually high with this franchise. I'm a pretty big Jets fan too, and while that team has had even worse results than the Mets, the only season I can think of that felt like a Mets season was the Brett Favre one, or maybe Rodgers going down on Series 1 like that, but the Mets seem to have something like that 5-6 times a decade whether its losing League championships on bases loaded walks after making a historic comeback in it to almost level it, losing the WS series to your crosstown rival that won like 83 games that year, assembling what on paper looked like an amazing team front-lined by Roberto Alomar, only to be even worse than the previous year, having the greatest catch in the history of your franchise in Game 7 of the LCS... only to lose at home with all the momentum, blowing a 7.5 game lead with 17 team left... and then doing almost the same thing the next year.... pitching Bumgarner to tie only to lose at home anyway by giving up a 3 run shot to a guy no one's ever heard of. Starting 11-1 with a terrible team just to get everyone's hopes up, winning 101 games with a good team (but not that great of a team that was clearly lucky to win 101) only to blow another division and start more lolmets memes. It's just always something.

I guess this has turned into a long rant, but my point/question Is the 2024 Mets season an absurdity? or is this just somehow normal bad season like the say 2021 Mets, and I am misreading?
Have the Mets suffered from an inordinate amount of absurdity in the last 25 years?, Or Can all baseball fans make this complaint?

OMG!!! Mets!!!

Well no one gave an opinion, it seems sporting events is dead 😀, particular individual team threads, and baseball is dead in general... lol it seems the team took off right after I made that post.

I do think there is way more variance in baseball than there used to be. The players put half the balls in play that they used to, and there are so many more relievers, all of whom throw like 20 IP a year, and are judged and constantly traded and cut based on those innings. Anyone's bullpen can go to horrific to amazing from year to year or within years because we don't have a proper grasp of who the good relievers are.

I'm not sure what you mean here as far as which team is going to sweep? There are so few games left, and both these teams manage to just win so much lately that I have absolutely no idea what's gonna happen. I could see either side sweeping to tell you the truth, hopefully it's just a 2/3 as either way that's good for our Mets. Someone may win 88-89 games and miss the playoffs, which will in the future with this format likely be a very rare event. Unfortunately with society's current obsession with "making the playoffs" these next few games will determine 2025 attendance, sports media perception, and fan perception of Stearns/Cohen. Gotta get in!

We did take games from philly, so we win the series... all is well. Somehow, someway...live bats we make it to NLCS. We go from there, chip and a chair. Next year Bob, well we need to him open up that checkbook, lots of money coming off and we can grab pitching. But this year lets go. They are winners for months, lets keep it goin. I have faith.

Mets v Phillies nlcs

get past the dodgers requires tremendous faith. I gots it

Going out with a whimper. It's not as bad as '07 and '08. But it's probably the '16 wildcard bad. It sucks and the only solace I'm taking is that I don't need to watch them go 0-8 vs Milwaukee this year.

This is insane. Double header for everything. They really played great for months to get here whateevr happens happens.

Lindor... and we're in

He is unreal.

He is making me a better human being. Was filled with so much hate at a relief pitcher, and then its all ok now.

The JD Martinez situation is something I didn't think could happen in sports anymore just given how much money and eyes are on it, but this mass delusion on a player being obviously done has shocked me.

We panicked when Lindor had a bad April, Nimmo a bad 2nd half, Alonso a bad season, Mcneil a bad ... well bad half his career.... but none of these players have been more obviously 'done' than JD Martinez, and he is still trotted out there in these big games, over options like Jesse Winker who's still young health and has had a decent career thus far.

As much as we theorize on why players are "done", usually it isn't this obvious. If I watched Pete's 2024 ABs side by side his 2023 AB's I would not notice a difference. Same with Lindor's April AB's vs the rest of the season. With JD the instant this dude had a hip injury supposedly caused by a shoe(lol?).. He's been wincing on every swing, can't hit balls right down the middle, starts his swing early and waves at everything off the plate. The guy is just obviously toast, sorry to say it.

But what's odd to me is even though with these other players, who all showed no external evidence of being done.,,, have received more fan ire and criticism.

With JD, ....the manager, team, and fans are in some sort of group denial where lucky base hits the other way in the hole are celebrated as "clutch", and "the old JD is back"

People just DO NOT want to admit star athletes get old. So much so we'll even panic about younger players being finished and horrible first. When Lindor stunk in April I was panicking..... with JD I've already moved into the Acceptance stage, I just sigh when i see his name in the lineup. It's just that obvious.

These after game interviews suck, everytime they talk to alonso they say "having a tough time... how did you come through." man his year was not bad at all. and he is dangerous and now milwaukee knows it. if i was him i would treat this grumpy nerds different. but he is a nice guy so he keeps letting it go.

Hell of a team this year, even Pete now, the one guy who really hasn't been involved in the magic at all, and was the laughing stock of the series up until his last AB

Mendoza is prolly the greatest manager to ever exist. These guys never quit, have fun.. win. After starting the way they did, they all must have felt like dirt, and same old crap. But he kept them at it and look at this. Mendoza for the hall, cast your vote YES.
