but does it still make no sense? That's critical to the enjoyment of the original.

Pretty much in keeping with the original in that regard.

So... The Substance...

When Natural Born Killers came out, I was about a year into my film geek era where I saw everything in the "independent" section at the local Indie record/video store. I read a bunch of film magazines talking about NBK and in the weeks leading up to it, I was obsessed with it from a filmmakers perspective. I even had dreams about it. Not the story, but the style and techniques and such. When I finally saw it, it absolutely lived up to what I envisioned.

I had a similar experience with The Substance prior to seeing it, but it did not live up to my expectations. I stayed mostly spoiler free, thankfully. But what was obvious, especially after seeing "Revenge", was that it was going to be violent and gory as all hell and then some. And then some more. And then probably a lot more after that. In that regard, it damn sure delivered. I'm not entirely sure what I expected from the climax but what lead up to it was unsettling enough that I attached far more to some of the smaller details earlier on than I should have. Reading "Foie gras" in the cook book had me preemptively grabbing a bucket. But the climax... Not nearly as "horrible" as I thought it would be. And I am glad that I had the expectations that I had going in, because, no it didn't live up to them. It far exceeded them. It was the whole film that was the point of the experience, not just the end, which is what I was preparing myself for. And all that violence and gore was used in the service of really trying to say and do something.

Film of the year so far for me!

visiting a friend, he learned i never saw hackers and put it on

it's so terrible and low budget, despite a marquee cast has terrible acting

effects are lol bad

feels like a college student made indie film

but i'm loving it for all those reasons

10/10

The Danish are at it again...

RED ROOMS (Les Chambres Rouges) (2023 - Canada) I believe this movie was released in Canada last year but just got a limited USA theatrical release last week.

Model/online poker player/hacker Kelly Anne is obsessed with the trial of a man accused of heinous crimes in Montreal. She spends her days attending the trial in person and nights researching the case and the victims. Why the obsession? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

This is definitely a slow burn movie (hint: avoid this if u d

Just watched this and thought it was outstanding. Definitely a mind bender and I immediately started researching what other people's takes were on it. Possibly enlightening short interview with the director: https://filmstories.co.uk/features/inter...

I can't find this anywhere. Not available in the US?

Funniest part

There's a great part in the beginning of this movie where Stallone rattles of four one-liners in about ten seconds, but this one is the best.

Charles Laughton Directs Night of the Hunter

This is a documentary about exactly what the title says. It runs for almost two and a half hours and shows Laughton's care in directing his actors. He knew what he was looking for.

Great cast that included Robert Mitchum, Shelly Winters, Lillian Gish, and two child actors.

James Agree wrote the screenplay but didn't live to see the finished film, dying of a heart attack. The film was a critical and box office disaster, and Laughton never directed another film.

Perhaps not. It's French Canadian so you might have to do some digging to find it. I used a Plex share to watch it

The Killing (1956)

Tractor: No, Clydesdales!

This movie is entirely exposition and it’s really exciting!: With a
voice-over just like Dragnet!

These Guys are pros!

Elisha Cook, Jr. in His Greatest Role?:

takes a !

I could tell you a little about it, I guess: But don’t tell Ben Casey!

$2500 is a lot of cash: And part of it is for not asking questions!

When I have so many nice things I’ll stop thinking about myself so much!

Juggalos!: Sterling Hayden!

Harkens back to the days when Men were Men; Women were Women; No-good Dames were No-good Dames; Toy Poodles were Toy Poodles; and

!

The way the story unfolds is amazing! Plans unravel in wondrous ways! The best ensemble cast in the history of film, portraying the largest collection of fatal flaws! (Is the whole human race broken? Maybe we should ask Zeno!) Perhaps the greatest movie ever made! Breaks every rule of film making! Check it out!

Phat Mack,

You forgot Tim Carey who also had a role in Paths of Glory.

The Criterion Channel is now showing The World's Greatest Sinner, a completely bonkers movie, written, directed, and starring Carey. Basically, Carey goes from being an insurance agent who tells people they don't need insurance, to an evangelist who promises eternal life, to a presidential candidate.

Sound track by Frank Zappa.

I had some stuff about Tim Carey but scratched it. An allusion to him remains in the comment about racists. He plays a hit man in Chinese Bookie and Von Zipper's sorta-hit-man in Beach Blanket Bingo. Now I've got to look for World's Greatest Sinner. Was he an evangelist or was he actually God? My memory is completely gone but still enjoys playing tricks on me.

He changes his name to God Hilliard, preaches heaven is on earth, and that he can make man immortal.

He's not a million miles away from Trump.

I am watching an incredibly bad movie right now. But looking at the cast you would think its an all-time classic. The cast contains:
Richard Burton
Marlon Brando
James Colburn
Walter Matthau
John Astin
Ringo Starr
Sugar Ray Robinson

What am I watching? It's pretty bizarre 😀

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I know I had seen this before, but I remembered little of it. I think most of you know the plot: a couple, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, have the memories of their two year relationship erased, but not completely. There's a fly in the ointment.

I love movies that take memory as a theme: Last Year in Marienbad, Hiroshima Mon Amour, La Jetee, Tree of Life, Vertigo, Certified Copy, In the Mood for Love, and and many more.

Do we trust our memory? Are there moments we'd rather forget? Are there memories we want to hold onto forever?

As we get older, I think about what we may not remember or complete memory loss. That scares me that I may not remember her voice, her face, her grace, her kindness, and her courage.

Kaufman is a great writer. Have you seen Adaptation?

I'm a big fan of creature features, especially throwbacks to old 50s sci-fi/horror B-movies. Think Gremlins, Tremors, The Faculty and Mars Attacks. I'm pretty out of touch with stuff that's come out in the past 10-15 years, so if anyone has recommendations similar to the ones I just mentioned, thrown them my way.

Yes. Great movie. And Synecdoche, New York.

Might be a bit older than that, but you'd probably like Slither if you haven't seen it. Pirhana 3D is also a lot of fun.

Big damn bugs the size of my fist. The size of a peanut butter and banana sandwich, man.
