A man on a mission

A man on a mission

Hi!

I've some goals in poker and in life that I like to share with you guys. I'm doing this to keep myself accountable, and in the process, I hope I can entertain you guys with some nice hands and graphs. At the same time, I might encounter some like-minded people that can motivate me as well.

Last July I finally finished my bachelor's degree in Psychology. It took a while, because of several reasons I will not dive deeply into right now. I'm not going to get my master's degree just yet, because at this point I want to play poker full time instead. I've been playing poker for years now, but never as seriously and as much as I should've had. Reasons for this are being too busy with uni, but also me being a bit of a lazy piece of ****.

My goals for the upcoming year:

(1) play poker for at least 25 hours a week;
(2) study poker for 10 hours a week. Mostly PioSolver, but also some analyses on direct opponents and talking with other regulars about hands I'm unsure about;
(3) move up in stakes;
(3) going to the gym five times a week;
(4) running at least two times a week;
(5) meditate at least five times a week.

I will try to update fairly regularly.

Hello guys,

Long time no see!

I've moved back to the Netherlands 5 months ago and I have no plans of returning to Malta in the near future. I have been in a relationship for eleven years now and don't want to give that up and therefore I've followed her back home. She sacrificed 1.5 years of her time moving to Malta and now it's my time to return the favor.

I haven't given up my goal of becoming an elite poker player, but unfortunately I can't continue playing heads up NLHE. The game that I have become really good at and was beating at 200+500z for a very nice winrate.

There are only a couple of sites that have a license in the Netherlands, but unfortunately none of them offer heads up NLHE. This means that I will have to learn a new game and that game will be 6-max NLHE. Last couple of months I've studied 6-max poker quite a bit and it's quite a bit different than heads up. Especially defending when ranges are asymmetrical and therefore one range interacts better with certain boards than the other range. In this case we see defending frequencies that hugely deviate from MDF. This is something that is completely new for me, because in heads up it's always quite close to MDF when it came to defending on flops. Also as the aggressor one starts bluffing hands that were never bluffing in heads up. Of course there is a lot of other stuff that is completely different, but these two things really stood out to me as most different comparing 6-max and heads up.

I'm going to play 100NL first 100k hands and just plan to move up as quickly as possible. I hope, and also expect, I can hold my own at 500 regular tables (meaning I can actually have a winrate pre-rakeback) within a year from now.

You can expect weekly updates. In these updates I'll share some results and most importantly share whether I've completed the goals I've set for myself the week before. These include poker related goals and also health/fitness goals.

Here is some graph p*rn from when I was still playing heads up:

.

I didn't game select at all in this sample (200 and 500z). The only person I was dodging (not playing 1-1) was CheckRaiser for the last year at 500z. The rest of the regulars I gave action and honestly I think I had a decent edge on all of them.

Let's hope I can do something that is remotely similar in 6-max.

Stars hu power ranking from the last 1-2 years?

One other thing!

If a good 6-max regular is reading this thread, and can show with graphs/credentials that he's beating/crushing poker at GG, then please feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in swapping coaching. My friend (who plays mostly 500 and 1k zoom) and I might be interested in setting something up!

Cheers!

Thanks mate!

I could give a power ranking of 500 and 200, but haven't played enough 1k to really have a solid opinion on the crushers at high stakes.

The kindest reg is not only the kindest, but he's the most honest/intelligent/calm reg around. I don't think I need to mention his name, because all regs on PokerStars know who I am talking about and I think they all agree on this.

Lets see at 200-500 list then

So here are the result from the goals that I have set for myself last week. Normally I like to go to the gym 4x a week to do strength training, but currently working with a physiotherapist to strengthen my core, because have been suffering from a lot of back pain for the last two years. He is of the opinion that it's essential that I first fix my lower back pain before I get back to heavy lifting. So, instead I chose to do exercise in the form of cardio only, which I want to do more of in the future anyway.

Poker is not going that well yet; especially last two weeks have been quite brutal in terms of variance. I have to accept that I am not a crusher yet in these 6-max games and that it will take some time to become one. The first 60k hands that I have played I'm breaking even. Although, I do think I have been running very poorly and I should at least be able (I hope/think) to win a couple of BB's in these high raked games at GGpoker.

Hi guys!

New week, new update!

I planned to not study that much last week and mostly focus on playing, but I am currently still so lost in a lot of situations. Constantly being uncertain on what to do (theoretically) is so foreign to me, which makes me a bit insecure sometimes. In heads up I was so much more aware of what thresholds were for defending in most situations and which combinations were preferred as bluffs, but here in 6-max there are still so many situations where I'm totally lost. Not knowing what GTO looks like a lot of the time also makes exploiting way harder, because you might not correctly identify as many spots where people are deviating from GTO. This uncertainty probably is the reason why I did way too much studying last week and not enough playing. I should just accept that becoming better in this game is a process and that it's completely normal that I am not that good yet.
