Politics posters chess thread

Mods - I hope this is OK, if not, move to LC or something.

Seems we've got a few chess players here, and some threads end up getting derailed arranging chess games. Figured maybe we could have a thread for it. So far, lagtight and I have played quite a few games, forumula72 and luckbox have expressed a wish to play, and a few other posters have taken an interest in passing. Post here to set up a game! We have been playing on chess.com so far.

I remember a discussion years ago about who wins between a 1500 and a GM with queen odds and the discussion somewhat favoring the GM - but id had to do a lot with time and the GM

I once made (the good side of) a draw in a 5 minute to 2 minute time-odds blitz game with Hikura Nakamura. White side of an Evans Gambit. Probably my biggest chess claim to fame.

Anyway, the results of the latest big tournament only further illustrate chess' problem -- the game is a draw. Something like 80% of top-25 games with a long time control end in draws. The draw death of chess. Capablanca and Lasker complained about this in like 1920 or so. They advocated for a 10x10 board and I think played some kinda match in this format. I say, bring it back.

the 1500 wins this easily enough

maybe a drunk 1500 vs. an inspired Carlsen would lose, but typically, nah

What does "the good side of a draw" mean? As in you were losing and managed to draw? What's your rating?

How good would you have to be, ratings-wise to stand a chance against Hikaru if you removed one of his knights before the first move? Like if you had a +3 advantage from the start.

in a 3 or 1 minute game, Naka probably beats anybody below like 2000 USCF

in a 30/90, G/30 (w/ 30 second increment), tournament type game, a 1700 or so is probably a small favorite.

We reached an endgame position where they say the superior side is "only playing for 2 results", win or draw. I was the one pressing for a win and could only lose with some real blunders, but we remained within the margins of a draw and that's what happened.

Rating is 2200 USCF

Surely that's the bad side of the draw then, no, lol? As in, you could have won, but you drew!

2200 is good man, is that master?

Heh, I suppose so. That's a fair way to look at it.

Yeah, I'm (just barely) a USCF master, but a fair distance from being an FM. My chess progress stopped cold once I started playing poker.

Love it when a plan comes together lol.

Blitz game, blundered the exchange so figured **** it, let's just give up some more pieces and see if we can tarp 'im.
