POG Politics Thread Version 3
Come on in! Since Dustin is taking his ball and going home, it's time to start a new politics thread.
Me neither
or me
Filthy, again most people do NOT want those positions that you promote.
There is no such thing as "Free healthcare" and people don't want to reduce law enforcement. Abortion-rights was a non-issue in this election.
This is just radically untrue. And no, there may not be "free healthcare" but it's very interesting how we manage to provide paid for healthcare to the people in this country with the very HIGHEST healthcare costs (the elderly) but can't provide it to everyone.
I feel it is true. People don't want to give up their current plans.
I see people in Canada or UK waiting months for medical procedures. I don't want that for me. If I want an MRI tomorrow, I can now get one.
lol as a Canadian, I can assure you that we look upon your health system with horror and sadness. If you're rich enough, you can buy an MRI tomorrow. If you're not, you just die.
If I have a medical need for an MRI tomorrow, I can get one. If I have a non-urgent need for an MRI, I may need to wait a few weeks for it. I'll happily pay the taxes I do for the medical care I get - my income tax bill is probably not much higher than I'd pay down there for health insurance
tl;dr - Americans have been lied to for decades about what a public healthcare system looks like and means for patients.
We can pay for whatever degree of healthcare we want. If we are young, we can enroll in a high-deductible plan and save $$$$. If you want a Cadillac plan you can pay for that.
If you are low-income or elderly, there are government plans to cover you.
People didn't vote for Trump because they didn't like what Harris said.
They voted for Trump because they liked what he said. I don't think you can look at the results last night and realistically say that this was a policy problem.
i'm not so much talking about the people who voted for trump. I'm talking mostly about the 100 million plus who didn't vote.
but yeah also the million or so who voted third party, and the millions who voted for trump, but would have also happily voted for a left candidate who fought for the working class
Most health care is a scam. The stuff that works is mostly cheap. Just lots of tests to tell you they don't know what's wrong.

That's like saying I can buy whatever type of car I want except some people can't afford the cheapest car and have to walk.
There are too many stories of people not being able to afford basic medical care and dying for me to believe that the government will cover the costs if you can't afford it.

Sure and you can say this for anything. Food, housing, clothing...

Or, I can pay a totally reasonable amount of taxes and never have to worry about it?
A friend of ours is now on her second lifesaving, experimental cancer treatment (she had two rare cancers). The first extended her life by 5 years. If the second one works, by all accounts she should have a typical lifespan. The only extra costs to them for all the surgeries, a total of 14 months in hospital, and rare experimental drugs was childcare, because their youngest child has special needs.
Or how about my son - he requires a non-allergenic formula for all his food intake. It's fully covered by government insurance. Out of pocket, it would be $800/month. That's on top of the almost $600/month for his medication, of which we pay zero (and none of it goes through our private insurance).
My wife had a heart attack three years ago - all it cost us was the lost wages in the difference between her regular income and the disability she made. She has diabetes, too, so has ongoing costs for maintaining that, and most of it is covered by government.
Nobody in Canada has to choose how much of their income goes to healthcare. There's no risk of ruin from any health emergency. Nobody is choosing to sell their house so Gramma can get chemo. And the quality of healthcare is better overall than the US (just look at lifespan, maternal mortality, or basically any other statistic you want) while still costing the government less per capita.
You've been lied to. This might be the only conspiracy theory I believe in
However, private industry and competition will do it faster, better and way cheaper.
Capitalism is the engine of USA#1
Communism is dead.
AT&T, housing, healthcare, mass media, Monsanto, blackwater, apple... all examples of corporations exploiting people, overcharging, bad products...
even Tesla completely relied on govt funding at the beginning. SpaceX relies on govt contracts
vaccines and pharma are mostly publicly funded research and development
remember when AT&T controlled everything, and long distance was 40 cents a minute in the 1980s.. and you couldn't buy a phone, you could only rent from at&t
or when private corporations refused to put seatbelts in cars until the govt forced them to(Ralph Nader)
wow zurvan, sorry to about your troubles. I'm really glad you have good healthcare, and you and your people are ok ♥
I see it everyday, while participating in it. Over and over I see first hand how competition forces efficiency and lowers prices/profits.
I'm really confused mark... I mean healthcare and housing are such clear examples of inefficiency. I dont' understand how you can see it any other way
we have millions(?) of empty units and around a million homeless.
housing prices are through the roof. right now I'm living in a corporate owned apartment building and it's a nightmare.
or education is another great example. right now you are paying absurd prices for your kids education. when we were kids UC was free for Californians, and great education
private universities have not lowered prices at all.
and lol healthcare. an ambulance ride cost like 10k. $50 band aids at the ER
I just paid 250 for flu and COVID vaccine!!!!! 😡
Umm vaccines are covered by insurance.
Community colleges are virtually free.
interesting
