2024 ELECTION THREAD
The next presidential race will be here soon! Please see current Bovada odds. Thoughts?
Maybe I said this and don’t remember it but I’m pretty sure I never said trump had no chance of winning. All I said were the MAGA chuds (embodied by the people I chose to put on ignore) were useless dipshits who didn’t deserve to be engaged with
Sidenote, was 2020 really rigged and the Dems just forgot to rig it this year just like they forgot to rig it in 2016 or are you gonna finally admit you’re just lying pieces of **** or stupid pieces of ****?
Anyway, grats I guess. Luckily this will benefit me more than it benefits you even though I definitely didn’t want this
that you don't ALLOW people to transition, that's not how the legal framework works.
everyone can do anything unless it's explicitly forbidden.
it's important to remember you aren't giving someone something by allowing him to do whatever he wants. he already can.
what you do is you ban s very specific slice of behaviors in very specific cases with heavy rationales that justify the banning. otherwise everything is allowed.
not really how any society has ever functioned but sure, I know some people like to have their first principles set about that way. for me it’s not so obvious that we take an approach of either start from infinite freedom or infinite authoritarianism, I think we just have social priors and as we learn more about certain issues we update those priors. and people’s approaches will be effected by their preferences. if I prefer a secure life I’m going to take a heavy approach at public safety, if I prefer civil rights I’m going to take a heavy approach at law, if I value personal freedoms I’m going to want to look at it through that lens and so on.
democracies are able to tolerate different approaches so I don’t see why your particular approach would be inherently better than my more pragmatic approach. and if I have a pragmatic reason to approach it your way you can always argue and convince me I’m wrong.
specifically with gender transition I think we have to take a look at the competing interests here, one could be an epistemic problem (you don’t see the evidence for it), another can be a normative problem (kids ought not ever make that decision), or a social problem (people don’t want to feel like their child can come home identifying as trans, or if their kid is trans they want them to feel comfortable coming out), or even a metaphysical problem (trans is incoherent or being anti-trans is incoherent).
in any case the prescribed approach is going to leave you in a sort of hammer dilemma (if you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail) so I don’t see any reason to accept that axiomatically.
in a country where the actual population is approximately 1/3 Dem 1/3 rep 1/3 independent:
A majority of public K-12 teachers (58%) identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party. About a third (35%) identify with or lean toward the GOP.
and I mean the fact that a person like gorgon teaches... kinda proves my point
checkraise it's called the "general power of competence" and under liberalism it definitely starts with "everything that isn't explicitly forbidden is allowed" (here allow has a different connotation than your allow, here it means it's possible) for private people, and reversed for government.

It will be interesting to watch them stick out their chin and act like they wanted this when they start getting screwed over by this administration. Oh they taking away your health care? Your taxes are going up?
sorry about that, was my genuine belief - i just figured you were being polite - there's a bunch of people in that thread who think i'm the devil incarnate for my wholly mainstream views and i know we often disagree on some stuff so just mentally lumped you in with that crew
no worries, I only get rude about trans issues to people that are particularly graphic or bigoted, and then I usually don’t engaged because they aren’t worth engaging 90% of the time.
yeah it's horrifying that my 9 year old nephew is asked whether he's a boy or a girl by both his teachers and doctors - i believe it comes from a good place and they are well intentioned - but it has terrible consequences behind it having authoritative people in your lives assert that
and this is just standard practice that your community embraces? I’d imagine at least a few people would be against that. not even sure 9 year olds understand what gender is and generally that sounds like it goes way beyond what is supported by scientific consensus.

You should compare teachers to people with a college degree not general population
You should compare teachers to people with a college degree not general population
no I shouldn't if my claim is that teachers skew democrats by a lot.
even if the reason they skew left a lot was just "women like teaching more, and college graduates skew left more", they would still skew left which was my claim.
a claim that note, gorgo denied was obviously true

all that comes up when I search that phrase is british stuff.
and liberalism’s birth was through the free man engaged in commerce, they didn’t even consider certain people as having any inherent freedom whatsoever. I think you just have a very idealistic notion of liberalism, which is fine, but I don’t find particularly useful.
Given that the election was a landslide, probably time to lock this thread.

Good lord. Thank goodness I have that dude blocked. His posts are so dumb it literally hurts my teeth.
Might want to tell him that not only does one teacher NOT prove his point, but also that technically I'm not only not a teacher, I'm also not a liberal or a democrat.
jfc it's tough to imagine effing up that much in one sentence.
Baaaaased

There is no reason to think teachers should match the general population.
I see he's now lying about the claim I disputed. I didn't say there weren't more democrats teaching than republicans. I said democrats don't RUN education. That's a completely different (and incredibly ignorant) claim.
a landslide requires you to win states that weren't even considered in play to begin with, and/or a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, stuff like that.
taking 7/7 battlegrounds is a solid victory sure, but when 2 or 3 of them are won by around 1% lol landslide.
in a republican landslide NYS is in play
