On paper, U Turn sounds like a movie I would love. I've seen it a few times because I keep convincing myself it must be better than I remember...but it isn't.

I saw it when it first came out...it was just ok.

Well there ya go... avoid at all costs.
I am sure yall can find better ways to spend yalls time than to watch a post JFK Oliver Stone film. there must be a Zack Snyder retrospective playing somewhere... 😀

It's not a bad movie, it's just totally forgettable. And an Oliver Stone movie with a cast like that should be much better than it actually is. That's why it's so disappointing.

Romance and Cigarettes

Directed and written by John Turturro.

It begins with a poem the wife has found from her husband to his mistress.

"If god's gift of grace
Or the light on your face
Could make me forget
Your vagina is wet."

Then the wife: "How different could it be. It's just a hole. What do you think you're gonna find there? Peanuts?"

And then the husband: "It's poetry!"

Oh, and that's just the beginning. The husband and wife are played by James Gandolfini and Susan Sarandon. The cast features Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, Mary-Louise Parker, Christopher Walken, Eddie Izzard and the fabulous Elaine Stritch.

How have I never heard of this one? Characters dance and sing along at times, not quite lip-synching. The first song is "Lonely Is a Man Without Love." I mean, c'mon start with poetry and launch into Englebert Humperdinck. How could you not love this movie?

Kate Winslet is great as the mistress. Buscemi as Gandolfini's friend can steal the show.

I wonder often what goes on between men and women. I mean I know what goes on between me and women, but, you know, those other men and women. What do we want of each other? What do we need from each other?

I loved this small film.

Available on Criterion.

John, are you excited for Paddington in Peru?

John, are you excited for Paddington in Peru?

Dom, definitely.

For my birthday I got Paddington socks and Paddington luggage tags along with a BritBag carry on from my two girlfriends. I think they want me to arrive at Paddington Station.

And some people think I'm a movie snob. I don't get it.

I'm just sorry Sally Hawkins won't be in it. Love her.

why do people love paddington so much?

Because he is awesome.

I'd really like to see more appearances from this woman.

Any Don Bluth fans? Brilliant animator.

during his era, his stuff was a lot better than disney's imo

Fievel was a real one.

Time for an update to the undertitle?

He was an animator for Disney in the 70s and worked on Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh, The Rescuers and Pete's Dragon and saw that they weren't putting the kind of care into their animation as they did in the early days. Lots of cuts and recycling scenes from earlier movies, so he left and started Don Bluth Productions. It took a while before Disney was able to step up their game, and even then, those movies don't compare to films like The Secret of NIMH and All Dogs Go to Heaven. His work was so vibrant and filled with detail.

Never have enjoyed the classic Disney animated movies much

Pinocchio scared me when I was a kid.

And I have seen The Little Mermaid and Beauty and The Beast more times than I can count. (The joys of having a daughter and granddaughter.)

Pinocchio scared me when I was a kid.

The scene where they turn into donkeys is terrifying, but if you think the movie is scary, you should read the book!

I mean the old ones...Snow White, Pinocchio, Song Of the South, Fantasia....they are all worth seeing, but I don't love them.

Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are both damn good.

But Pixar makes much better movies.

Aladdin and the Little Mermaid are great too.

Pocahantos, Hercules, and Hunchback are all very good imo.

More recently I loved Zootopia and Moana and enjoyed Frozen.

One of the Ghibli movies I hadn't seen was My Neighbor Totoro, so I just watched it for the first time. Really enjoyed it, but I'm shocked at how little happens in the movie. It's crazy to me that this became such a hit in Japan, really highlight the difference in storytelling between cultures.

I think Disney made some really good animated movies in the 90s. The Lion King was amazing and my favorite from that time. I don't know who wrote it, but it's a great story, though the animation doesn't compare to the stuff Bluth was doing.

I remember reading somewhere that Hayao Miyazaki hated The Lord of the Rings movies.

Anora is ****ing great.

Anora is ****ing great.

I look forward to seeing this. Tangerine was one of my favorite films of the past few years. Sean Baker has a gift for making us feel for those people who we would otherwise pass over.
