Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Anora was top 2 of the year for me. Mikey Madison lock Oscar nom and I hope the dude that plays Toros gets one too because his performance was bananas.
When it comes to Disney... it's more about the Stylists and Designers than it is the Animators in my humble O.
Don't get me wrong, the physical work of animating is critical and takes a lot of talent and patience, but the most important part of the process is the Stylization and Conceptual Design.
first and foremost are the pioneering Giants like Mary Blair and Ward Kimball... and of course the most important stylist of all, Eyvind Earle.
Eyvind's work is stylistic work still has influence in modern works like Pocahontas, Open Season, Frozen etc
I had the unique opportunity to meet Eyvind Earle before he passed away at one of his gallery shows in Los Angeles, and I was like a Kid in a Candy Store... I have several pieces of his work post Disney.
Harvey
The hell with football. I just watched Harvey again.God, I love this movie. My dad introduced me to it when I was a boy. I can't imagine anyone not liking this one. Jimmy Stewart is great.
"Years ago, my mother used to say to me ‘In this world, Elwood-she always called me Elwood-you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.’ Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.”
I'm with Elwood.

Isn't Harvey just a mentally ill drunk though?
edit: Wait, Harvey's the rabbit. I meant Elwood.
No way!
Wait, maybe a bad example.
Miller: A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. I'll give you an example; show you what I mean. Suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly, somebody will say, like, "plate" or "shrimp" or "plate of the shrimp" out of the blue; no explanation. No point in lookin' for one either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.
Otto: You eat a lot of acid, Miller? Back in the hippie days?
Miller: I'll give you another instance. You know the way everybody's into weirdness right now? Books in all the supermarkets about Bermuda Triangles? UFOs? How the Mayans invented television? That kind of thing?
Otto: I don't read them books
Miller: Well, the way I see it, it's exactly the same. There ain't no difference between a flying saucer and a time machine. People get so hung up on specifics, they miss out on seeing the whole thing. Take South America, for example. In South America thousands of people go missing every year. Nobody knows where they go. They just, like, disappear. But if you think about it for a minute, you realize something. There had to be a time when there was no people, right?
Otto: Yeah, I guess.
Miller: Well, where did all these people come from? Hmm? I'll tell you where. The future. Where'd all these people disappear to? Hmm?
Otto: The past?
Miller: That's right! And how'd they get there?
Otto: How the **** do I know?
Miller: Flying saucers—which are really—yeah, you got it. Time machines. I think a lot about this kind of stuff. I do my best thinking on the bus. That's how come I don't drive, see?
Otto: You don't even know how to drive.
Miller: I don't wanna know how, I don't wanna learn, see? The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.
I haven't seen Repo Man since it first came out, which I see was forty years ago. Probably time to watch it again.

Rewatched Gladiator in anticipation for 2 in a couple weeks.
Still stands up. Gets a rare 5/5 in my books. One of the best Best Picture winners of the last 25 years.
It is nothing new or surprising for actors or singers, but you have to give him credit for marrying a hot chick, Donna Dixon. Anyone remember Tom Hanks in a TV series called Bosom Buddies? Donna was in it. Edit: oh crap this is the movie thread, I better make a reference to a movie, Dan and Donna met on the set of "Doctor Detroit."
Also don't forget this classic Donna Dixon:
So... the new Disney movie, Wicked, has a new toy line and merchandising associated with it... on the back of those toys is printed a link to a pornographic website.
well that makes it a lot more interesting to me, because the trailer looks about as special as a Saturday morning cartoon from the 90s.
Please provide url. Quickly.
It’s literally wicked.com
Gilbert
Surprisingly, a moving film about Gilbert Gottfried, his wife and children, and his family. It's made before his death, so there's the added level of ennui to his story. He is portrayed as quirky, as expected, but lovable, especially when he talks about his wife and children and his wife talks about him.

Ohhhhh...I'm gonna cry watching that. I love Gilbert
You can say that about most things or happenings. I could be in Italy right now stuck in a traffic jam, or in New York City trying to cross the street during rush hour, or on a leaky ferry boat headed to Catania. Or in London trying to get a cab. If life wasn’t an adventure, you’d die of boredom.
