The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
Someone break up the Habs. 3rd road game in 4 nights against a VGK team that had won 14 of 17, down 2-0 and come back to win.
lolcanada, lolrefs
KNIES!
Yay! Boo! YAY! BOO! YAY again! Crazy game lol
weeeeeeeee
canucks apparently shopping both pettersson and miller, and supposedly the latter only wants to play for the rag$. would be incredible if that happens, activating my one time
REILLY WOOOOOOO
yeah i only know whats out there in the public, here's a good run down of the situation:
this seems to be the latest:
FRIEDMAN: I believe everybody knows that Vancouver is open to listening. I believe that they have already, on both players, and will continue to do so. But I still think that Vancouver’s preference is that the two of them both, for lack of a better term, grow up and figure it out. Because they realize these are hard trades to win. But I think the difference now, as I said a couple weeks ago on Hockey Night is that the stress of it all and the fact it’s still a thing has begun to spill over elsewhere onto the organization. It’s clearly bothering Tocchet that this is still a thing. I believe it’s bothering Hughes that it’s still a thing and now it’s just spread where everyone has to deal with it.
and here is the obviously correct conclusion:
This is basically everything that is dumb about this sport and this team. That anyone would even entertain this debate—whether to trade the quiet 26-year-old who is still a Selke-caliber defensive center when snakebitten or the loud 31-year-old who is definitely not—is dumb, but in character for hockey media. That the Canucks' party line appears to actually be two different party lines is dumb, but in character for the Canucks, who once brought you the surreal scene of Bruce Boudreau talking about his impending firing. That we are talking about all of this and not the front office's failure to add any defensive depth in the offseason is dumb and, I suspect, the point.
so yeah i'm praying for a miller trade, but a pettersson trade would be hilarious, so i'd take that too i guess. of course the clowns who run the team will probably just continue to do nothing because they're completely useless
you know they weren't fighting when jay beagle, the locker room sheriff was in town
lol beagle, but it's a rare situation where you actually could use some strong veteran leadership. someone willing to make miller stfu. i think luke schenn might have been doing that when he was around, and the team had some good times then. tocchet should also be doing this, i thought that was literally the entire point of hiring a knuckle-dragging cte meathead like him, but he's probably miller's coke buddy/dealer, so yeah glgl there
JAN. 1
Brad Richardson, who played 17 games with the Canucks as a waiver pickup late in the 2021–22 season, goes on a podcast to talk about the rift.
RICHARDSON: Let me tell you this, and I’ll be honest, super honest with you, and I was in that dressing room with those guys. I love J.T., love him. He’s a ****in’ animal. But I even told him, "You’re too hard on this kid. You’re too hard on him. You’re saying exactly what I think, but he’s a kid that doesn’t take—when you’re on him, on him, he’s going to shut it down." I told him, like, "Hey, you’re going to lose this guy if you keep doing it." That’s what I said to him. And hey, J.T.—he’s the man. But there is a lot of tension, and something’s gonna give, I guarantee you.
aside for the fact that miller is literally the last person who should be criticizing anyone, if you're going to have an ******* like jimothy timothy on your team, you absolutely need another guy around to keep him in line and beat his ass when required. they don't have anyone like that rn, this is the culture they've build, along with a shoddy defense, a gimp goalie and ~no prospects. gjge
Jimothy Timothy saving the NACKZ again
wow, only a truly hypermegaelite world class champion could light up the habs. don't waste time looking to see who won the game or anything, hurry up and trade for him now!
unfortunately the canucks are one of the few donk ass teams who would be fooled by one game and change their entire organizational plan over it, so expect a pettersson trade tomorrow i guess.
and along those lines, one of the rumours had them interested in necas:
did not have martin necas tied for top league scorer on my bingo card
career 0.67 points/game, this season: 1.56 wut
necas - 42 points
aho - 29
gostisbehere - 24
svechnikov - 24
jarvis - 18
and he's absolutely carrying the team solo, apparently. what is this i dont even
would be peak canucks to sell low on a superstar, swapping him for a dude on the heater of his life. though i see that necas is now down to 1.18 points/game, so the canes might have missed their window there. please let it still happen, i might never stop laughing, and heals deserves it
problem with selling petey is he's a potential franchise player who they drafted and can lead them to greatness
problem with selling millsy is that perhaps he was right and by jettisoning him, you're giving the greenlight to all those on the fence about being lazy and disinterested that this is just a team to go out on the ice and collect a paycheck with
yeah trading pettersson would obviously be idiotic, but no, miller isn't right, he's just a stupid *******
5v5 xg% this season:
1. hronek
2. hughes
3. miller
4. garland
5. pettersson
i didn't realize that miller is apparently playing that well, only slightly better than pettersson, so yeah he should probably shut the **** up about whatever his problem is there. the only guys playing poorly are mostly the ones you'd expect: hoglander, myers, heinen, bluegar, raty, joshua, juulsen. if you want to bitch at anyone, bitch at them. or the gm for building this team. or better yet, request a trade
Nucks are in a pretty tough spot beyond the Miller/Pettersson deal. The D beyond Hughes and I guess Hronek is an abomination (these guys didn't manage a real breakout after their tying goal yesterday) and Hughes may well bolt in 2027. Are they good enough to go for it in those two seasons? They'll need two legit top 4 D (preferably including one top pairing one, though Hughes is good enough to to have a guy like Hronek fake it on the top pair). 7 million in cap space as it stands won't get you far, Boeser's 6.5 is coming off the books but if he walks they'll need some sort of replacement as well. Even with a big cap raise, it's tight. UFA appears to offer some guys with question marks like Orlov, Provorov, Chycrun and Pettersson the D, but no real prizes. Trade assets are apparently not all that.
Of all the (poor) options out there I'd say trying to get rid of Miller, invest the cap saving in D, hedge for potential post-Hughes years in the process and hope some dudes like Höglander can pick up the slack seems like the best. Probably more realistic than standing pat and hoping your D magically gains the ability to push the puck in the right direction.
