This was 100% virtue signalling and he split the country all because he refused to back down on a totally useless mandate. And being vaccinated as a needed requirement to drive a truck alone? Laughable.

These are the same truckers that kept our country from falling apart and worked during covid. Bringing food and supplies to cities. And when it was time to throw them under the bus in favour of the fringe, he embraced the fringe.

I am vaccinated myself, however I found his stance on truckers utterly preposterous.

Before 2020 I had no issues with Trudeau, he stayed out of the way of businesses mostly and ran a steady ship.

Then after 2020/2021 was when the train started derailing hard.

In a decade in power, Trudeau has been absolutely centrist in taxation. He MAINTAINED the corporate tax cuts ushered in by harper, he LOWERED personal income taxes, did TEMPOARY LOWERING of gst (a conservative idea from the prior election remember??) and then the one time there is a genuine raise in a tax rate it is this technocratic tweak that equalizes the taxation paid when returning shareholder value as capital gains or as dividends and doesn't apply to the overwhelming majority of Canadians. Look, I get that you abhor it. But to try and decry it as "far left fringe" is just silly.

None of the other policies support the narrative you said which was that in desperation he turned to appealing to the far left fringe. Like with capital gains, you can criticize the steady growth in the size of the government over a decade - personal growth slowed more recently and a in both budget 2023 and 2024 there was austerity across a lot of departments. I am only talking about last year regarding taxes.

Overwhelming majority of Canadians are not capital deployers so they have no idea about what is happening with the economy. This is why you are only fixated on "returning shareholder value or as dividends" and then actually ignore one of the major impetus decisions for an investor or business to deploy capital or not.

If I have capital, why should I invest it in Canada where my capital gains will be taxed much higher vs the USA? I know tons of people just anecdotally that pulled their money out of Canadian markets and threw it in USA markets.

How do actions like this produce higher GDP / capita for the country? It simply doesn't. Most Canadians have zero clue about large investment decisions.

You may think capital deployment and investment is not important in the grand scheme of things, that is a fringe left position.

Trudeau giving the finger to truckers was due to Trudeau embracing the fringe left that wanted everyone that was not vaccinated to lose their jobs. Remember this was early 2022 when everyone had already had the vaccine or gotten infected. This vaccine mandate on truckers had nearly ZERO impact on reducing covid infections. Everyone had already gotten infected with Omicron yet Trudeau dug in and would not back down regarding the mandate.

The fringe left were the absolute loudest voices regarding firing and even celebrating the deaths of the unvaccinated. You had entire reddit forums celebrating the deaths of the unvaccinated. This is the fringe far left that Trudeau listened to when deciding not to lift the mandates after everyone was already either vaccinated / infected. Nobody else gave a damn, the entire country re-opened early 2022 with no more mandates and everyone went along their lives without a care for Covid.

Throwing our truckers under the bus given the context of where we were with respect to covid in 2022 was just a preposterous thing for Trudeau to do, and frankly shameful. This is coming from someone that supported the vaccines.

I realized Covid pro shutdown "scientists" were a bunch of hypocrites when during the summer of 2020 they came out and supported mass George Floyd protests while at the same time supported closing the economy down and social distancing. There is no "social distancing" in mass protests, but who cares about covid when its over a protest you support!

The specific example of capital gains rates was a tax economists thought made the tax code more efficient and equitable, hardly the "far left fringe". I think the Liberals felt they needed to raise some type of revenue to keep at least some relative fiscal constraints in the budget, and chose one of the least painful ones for the average Canadian. You can hate the tax - you can complain that ANY tax increase is by definition left even in a tenure that largely either cut or maintained taxes - but hardly "far left fringe".

One can debate the merits here, but as you suggest with your numbers that Trudeau's government did a great job of increasing support for first nations peoples has been a hallmark of his entire tenure. So yet again this is not an example of him appealing to the far left fringe after going down in the polls.

I wouldn't say native is anywhere near as bad as the N word, but certainly it has become archaic and outdated. I can't say I've seen indigenous people referred to as "natives" either by indigenous people or in mainstream media in....yikes....ages.

Also note that this is very specifically about the Canadian context - in the US they use Native Americans the way we do First Nations.

This is wild to me. Not sure if this is a Quebec thing or not, but yeah, it feels to me like it's been a decade or two since that term fell out of favour, although perhaps it's not been that long. By dictionary definition it may be "accurate" but like a few other terms for people, it's been used enough in a pejorative or diminishing fashion that people don't like being referred to that way any longer.

Right, different people are different. In the US, terms like "Native American" or even "American Indian" seem to be acceptable, at least to some. But I have no idea if some nations feel differently about that, just like there might be some Indigenous people in Canada that are fine with "native" - but as a general rule I'd steer well clear of it, especially worded as "the natives".

Something I only learned in the last year, and I felt silly that I didn't know before given some of the work that I do, is the distinction between First Nations and Indigenous people. It might be something you already knew, but I would think there might be others who don't. First Nations does not include the Metis or Inuit, whereas Indigenous does. This distinction is included in the Constitution and thus grants differing legal rights, so maybe I'm the only one who didn't know and we can all have a chuckle at that. :p
