In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

I'm skeptical that sufficient groundwater is going to play much of a part. 50mph dry, hot wind blowing across brush that hasn't seen rain in 6 months is going to dry out whatever moisture those plants have from groundwater pretty quickly. So you're going to lose an economic output (strawberries or whatever) to try and replenish aquafiers and still have to invest in the types of ground maintenance you've mentioned in the threads. It's nice to replenish aquafiers but in regards to fire prevention

It might matter less than on-the-ground frequent removal of the combustible yes

You realize they are called wildfires, right? Why do you think they don't just call them fires?

I was just reading about the largest wildfire in my current area the 2003 Cedar fire

Guess how it started?

Yes lightening is responsible for lots of fire. But these southern California fires that are happening during Santa Anas are not caused by lightening because lightening doesn't coincide with Santa Ana winds.

The fire in the hollyweird hills started when they had no electricity on the mountain.

There are definitely some anomalies in these fires.

Watching local TV. a guy named Mitch saved an entire neighborhood when he was able to stop the Eaton fire spreading, using a pump and water from his swimming pool.

This is insane! Why isn't this all across the news? Everyone needs to share this on their social media and get the word out. Still 7 days before Trump can really start fighting for us. That is a lot of time for the Deep State to launch more attacks against Americans. Do your sources have any idea where the next strike could be? Pacific Northwest has been suspiciously quiet, they could be next!

by rickroll k

are you actually saying that there's no conservatives at all who don't blame the left for the fires?

do you actually believe that? if so, that's really sad if true

Where did I ever say Every single person? Stop being silly. But what's really the point in spending time looking for the few stragglers who go against the grain other than as a footnote? These things have become so predictable it's comical.

I think a better question is what on Earth is keeping the sane people around? Deeply held philosophical beliefs that happen to align with a bunch of lunatics? 😀

The fraud sleepy joe just announced aid is flowing in and all the victims of the CA fires will now receive a one-time payment of $770.

Does this make you sick yet that we sent hundreds of billions to Ukraine? They couldn't make it an even 1K?

This has been a joke of a "gov't"

We need to pray Trump gets in next week.

you indeed said exactly that

by wet work k

Try to find us a few rightwing pols or voters etc who are not blaming the left for the fires for example.

by rickroll k

I just wanted to see the examples you'd use--because it would be entertaining--I know there are some.

Then we could go show them the hurricane machine 😀

That leftist Marxist governor who smoked cigars? What was his name, Schwarzenegger?

by Luciom k

I did previously ITT. Water serving strawberry production 60 miles north-west of LA comes (2nd biggest strawberry production area in CA) by 30-40% from thousands oaks municipal water system (15-20 miles north west of the palisades).

That dries the ground in the wild area nearby the locations of the wildfires, making it so that there is more vegetation ready to burn quickly and so on. That's especially true if it rained more than usual so more stuff grew (which is what happened as i reported even

No you didn’t but I want to make sure I understand the point you are making. Are you claiming the ground in the palisades was dry because of water usage 60 miles north for strawberry growers? So the groundwater run off goes to the Thousand Oaks municipal water system?

Or is it that water diverted to strawberry growers would have gone to the palisades?

And are you referring the the Central Valley Project and water going to the San Joaquin Valley?

by jjjou812 k

It was human caused like every single one of these that I've look at-- with about half of them being caused by downed power lines.

Are you denying Schwarzenegger was a human and claiming he was a very advanced cyborg?

Are you trying to be funny or what are you trying to do?

Now we know you can use the google. Next, go look up Jewish space lasers causing hurricanes in 2003.

This is a serious thing that's happened. Tens of thousands of people have lost their homes and dozens are dead. You should try to be more serious.

I take the fires and the hurricanes and the damages they cause seriously. I don’t take seriously the people blaming others for causing the events nor entertain the idea that such blame mid event is anything but political theater.

Trumps rake the forest suggestions are just ****ing stupid as are the people that parrot the idea.

I tend to trust a fire chief when they say the powers to be failed them . Reality is once these fires were going and you add 75 mph to 100- mph winds nothing is stopping a fire of that magnitude . Sadly the winds are forecasted to be in 50' 60MPH range the next few days which doesn't bode well

What you call "****ing stupid" is actually how to properly maintain these areas that are subject to wildfires. It's called forest management, removing or burning off dead brush and removing other fuel. It's actually a thing.

And you certainly don't drain the reservoirs, those were horrible decisions of the state government and newscum, as are removing hundreds of millions of dollars from agencies like the FD and forestry management. He also wanted all the water (that they could use badly) run off into the ocean to protect a tiny species of fish. Can you actually believe they're more interested in protecting small fish than the people of Los Angeles? It's sad how people like yourself can't see how wrong this is and support their decisions just because of the letter D after their names.

Can you point out a fire that was fueled by Santa Ana winds that doesn't have a human cause? I searched and couldn't find a single one. Your whole narrative that these are "wild" fires and just something that's out of human control is bullshit and the only reason why you're pushing it is because you're perceived political opponents are saying the opposite.

I agree with you 100 % on forest management but I do believe all state controlled reservoirs were full and the ones that were empty were municipally controlled . Though the state should have oversight that the municipalities do their job and not have them empty for over a year .

A fire like that was in all reality caused by a careless cigarette or arson

Why does everyone have to think about causation and severity like a toddler? Regardless of how a fire starts, it is entirely possible for negligence on the part of government/utilities or factors resulting from climate change to make the fire much more devastating.

I can assure you that my view here is fully nuanced

no this is not what happened

you made an absurd statement that i refuted

you responded with "omg i would never say such nonsense"

i quoted the exact nonsense you said

and now we're at the "i was joking" part where this usually goes to eventually

i like you, you're a great poster, but this was pure bad faithed garbage posting where your intention is to incite rather than discuss
