Box Office Draft 2025 Thread

Box Office Draft 2025 Thread

Proposed rules:

- No January movies
-10 teams, 8 picks per team (no January and maybe still a reduced number of movies?)
-$325m cap on each pick (Maybe move this?)
-Standard snake draft of the ABABABAB variety (only 6 of us and there are 6 bangers, so no need for 6th to go first 2 rounds in a row)
-Most North American box office at the end of January 2026 wins

Note: If your movie gets (1) moved to 2026 or (2) does not get a theatrical release or (3) gets a simultaneous streaming/theatrical release (be wary of Netflix films!), you may pick a movie that went unpicked, but it must be at least two weeks from release.
For substitutions only: $250m cap if its a 1st round pick, $150m cap for a round 2 pick, $100m cap for round 3 & 4, $75m for round 5 & 6, $70m cap for round 7 & 8, and $50m cap for round 9 & 10.

Randed order:

I guess this is a good time to take a punt, and I did just watch Sinner win the SF so...

Sinners

I saw the Sinners trailer at Gladiator 2, and it was absolutely the best thing that happened in the theatre that day.

M3gan 2.0

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Mickey17

I want this movie to be good and do well. Original sci-fi is a good thing, actually

Running Man

Glen Powell, Edgar Wright, Stephen King - lots of good opportunities here

I was hoping you'd pick one of the two movies I was torn between, going The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants then.

Running Man was a fave growing up; interested to see the new version

Naked Gun

I pretty much hate all my options here.

The Black Phone 2 shouldn't be a total flop at least.

I've being eyeing that for a couple of rounds now. Hesitated taking it because according to imdb it's still in pre-production, so if that's accurate I don't see how it releases this year. But if it does, it's great value at this stage of the draft.

Damn yeah that doesn't sound promising, I'll have to hope for the best.

Can I take uk ones that haven’t been released in the US yet?

I don’t remember the rule

Is it just domestic release hasn’t happened or worldwide also hasn’t?

Also, no January movies so this movie is out in UK but not in US until Feb or after?

So uk release has happened, worldwide won’t till February

I think it should be fine as long as the US release is in 2025.

Ok I skimmed through some older drafts and found this just now:

What is the ruling on films that are released in some places but not yet in US?

by master3004 k

Last year we did not released in the US before Jan 1 = a-ok

by aaronk56 k

Yeah, if it hasn't been released in the U.S. it should be okay. Screening at film festivals even in the U.S. don't matter either.

So yeah I'm pretty sure your pick should be ok based on this precedent.

Also quick note that back then there were a lot more takes about how movies would perform and it's actually kinda fun to see how wrong some of them turned out to be.

Paddington in Peru

Yeah I assumed that was the movie you wanted, strangely enough the quotes above were about Paddington 2.

Lol love it
