Moderation Questions

Moderation Questions

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

And what you have to say is who you have on ignore? LOL

Sometimes, yes. Like I said, they need to be called out.

This is Trump's America now, son. **** your preferred pronouns.

Seriously. If we are entering the Attitude Era of American politics, then I don't want to hear any whining about thread titles.

by Gorgonian k

Yeah I've tried that before. The ignore function here is basically useless.

Every once in a blue moon I hit show post on one of Jalfrezi's posts and immediately regret it

But in general, the ignore feature works when morons don't quote bad posts

Even if it's only once in a blue moon 😉 that's still incentive enough for me.

The biggest problem. I also don't like that they can still see and respond to my posts. It's really pretty useless. If it worked that way I'd never see them again, I promise you that.

Basically you're saying you want the right to post with anyone on this site, but you also want the right to deny that to others.

That sounds a little, er, egocentric. Some might say, even Trumpian.

It's quite amazing what a little politics forum can bring out in people.

That sounds a little, er, egocentric.

Where did I say I want to deny anyone the right to post here? You're aware that the way I described it is how the blocking function works on most sites, right?

If I block someone on TikTok, I never see them, they never see me. If I block someone on Facebook, I never see them, they never see me. That's all I'm saying. I wish it worked like that here. And again, if you think that's egocentric, that's pretty stupid, but I also don't care.

Did you not just say you agreed the biggest problem was quoting moronic posts?

I'm still going to say Rump Snorters - come at me bro ...

Once again, you're claiming the right to read posts by and post with anyone on this site, but you also claim the right to stop others from doing the same.

Why shouldn't someone else be able to read your posts on a public forum? By denying them this right you're detrimentally affecting the use they get from this forum because they won't be able to keep track of conversations. On discussion/debating software, that's quite fascistic.

(The quoting thing is a problem, I agree, and is handled far better by other forum software).

The ignore feature here is admittedly pretty bad

The biggest problem is that I see ignored users' posts that others quote. I have no problem with people using the board the way they want. I just wish I didn't see posts from users I've blocked if they get quoted by someone I haven't blocked. I also with I didn't see that they HAVE posted. I just want to never have to think about them again.

I would like the ability to control who reads what I post, if that's what you mean, yes. Just like I can on most sites. Sorry if you don't like it. The lack of this function is nearly enough to make me not post here anymore. It probably will be the reason very soon.

Have your confetti ready.

I liked the way that rhymed.

Agree 100%
I was just complaining that I just told you I ignore jalfrezi and you immediately quoted a nonsensical post of his!!! Not cool!!

However I do also agree with jalfrezi that mentioning frequently who you have on ignore is passive aggressive and deeply immature

Ah. lol

Yeah, I think the problem is with the way the board functions, not the way users quote others.

Sorry hahaha

I'm ok with anyone and everyone seeing me as both of those things, for the record.

and he's always the first to respond to those he repeatedly mentions are on his ignore list lololol

Haha ok ok, relax

I don't ignore forever because it's a useless feature. Whenever I put someone on there, I usually remove them in less than a week because the function is so utterly stupid and ineffective.

by Gorgonian k

Sometimes, yes. Like I said, they need to be called out.

Called out for what, being in the opposing political party as you? lmfao...

The amount of drama in this forum is beyond ridiculous.

And I have one more very important thing to say:

Spoiler
Show

I have and have had just one person on my ignore list, not a politics poster thankfully.

You just made this up.

Happy for CN to confirm this.

Relax, there's zero chance he wasn't talking about me. He's one of those guys that can't resist taking shots at me when they see my name.

Ok, that does make more sense, but he loves taking shots at me too when he sees my name.

lololol
