2024 NFL Game Thread – Conference Championship
- Jeff Triplette making the worst call in playoff history and Marcus Mariotta completing a pass to himself for a TD
My favorite Triplette moment is Santana Moss telling him what a horrible official he is. Easily the WOAT
(:08) R.Griffin scrambles right end for 8 yards, TOUCHDOWN. The Replay Official challenged the runner broke the plane ruling, and the play was REVERSED. R.Griffin scrambles right end to NYG 1 for 7 yards (J.Pierre-Paul). FUMBLES (J.Pierre-Paul), ball out of bounds in End Zone, Touchback. PENALTY on WAS-S.Moss, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards, enforced between downs. PENALTY on WAS-S.Moss, Disqualification, 15 yards, enforced between downs. Penalties will be assessed on the 2nd half kickoff.
Triplette might be terrible and the rule might be terrible but it was 100% the correct ruling on that play. Triplette requiring 3 attempts to pull out the flag to throw it while Moss ripped into him was certainly high comedy though.
I barely watched the Patriots/Rams. I had it on in the background while I was doing a bunch of stuff. But I guess I did watch.
I agree. So the last seven seasons are all fixed to favor the Chiefs? How many people need to conspire to make this happen? And all of them are trusted to keep quiet.
13 seconds was rigged? How? They told McDermott not to play any defense at all and let Kelce run wild up the field?
Super Bowls I have barely watched in "recent" years have been Rams/Bengals and Broncos/Panthers. I can't remember why I didn't watch much of Rams/Bengals. I do remember Broncos/Panthers not interesting me at all.
Yeah, Broncos/Panthers didn’t interest me much either. That game was lame.
Question for a friend (OK it’s me. I’m the friend):
How degen is it to buy a Super Bowl square?
I’ve never done it, mainly because I think it’s kinda dumb.
Ala the Brady/Belichick debate, don't we need a thread about who is more important to the Chiefs dynasty -- Mahomes or Reid? 😃 OMG we actually had that thread and didn't know the answer.
Everyone gambles on the Super Bowl, even people who otherwise Never gamble… they’ll all be watching.
I never once in my life have said I wouldn't be watching but absolutely mean it this time. And it's not because its a boycott or anything. I just have no interest in watching a super bowl with those two teams.
Also, gambling on the superbowl is irrelevant. It's not like a decade ago where the only game that had unique parlays and bets was the super bowl. Now I can bet on anything my heart desires on a random Thursday night game . I think most people are gambled out by now.

It is essentially (apologies to SWAMI and a couple of others) the only sports betting I do. It makes the dull games of the bunch more interesting. It is also 0 ev which is a huge attraction for me!

Next time you watch a Chiefs game, count how many offensive holding/other penalties are called when Patrick is passing (unless it's in garbage time).
The QB idolization is way too important to the NFL and State farm so the rules are set up so QBs rarely get hurt and are overrated.
Wat. Watching a QB who could barely throw a forward pass attempt to win a SB and succeed was compelling tv for me and I don't care about Broncos or Manning at all.
That game was terrible and so was Manning against the Seahawks. I was gonna say those were the only two really terrible games in recent history, but Rams Patriots Goff game was also not very good.

The QBs are overly protected for sure.
Someone posted that Mahomes is 21st in the league among active QBs for roughing the passer penalties (penalties per 100 attempts). But if KC is allowed to hold that’s going to impact that some.
That said, fixing a season(s) for a team
Seems unlikely to me and I’m not oblivious to some of the cheating scandals in the past (ie Tim Donaghy).
The Chiefs are an amazingly well-oiled machine by itself, already a tough opponent to beat. It's just that when every iffy call seems to go in their favor, it's over. I don't think anyone is saying any fix is to prop up a crap team but it seems weird calls are being made intentional or not to ensure that the favorite remains undefeated in big games...you guys are poker pros, what are the odds of always winning flips every.single.time. when it's in a crucial moment of the game?
I honestly wanna know in the Mahomes era was there ever a time they got 'screwed' like the Bills in that 4th down fiasco or when they met the Eagles in the SB with those weak PI calls?
EDIT: also, things like that phantom flag on the Bills' last offensive play doesn't help with conspiracy rumors.

It's dumb to buy a square. Multiple squares. That's where it's at.
All sports betting is dumb but life is dumber without it. Go for it. 100 years from now it won't matter anyway.
This guy gets it.

This guy maybe not so much.

I honestly wanna
There was a terrible nonsense holding call on Trey Smith in the Texans game that was probably the worst call of the game and killed a drive. But the announcers didn't spend any time on it, and the Chiefs ultimately overcame it to win, so no one will ever remember it. Just like no one would still be talking about the 4th down spot if the Bills had run 3 minutes off the clock and scored a TD to win the game.
But if that call had gone against the Texans it would have blown up the internet and been in all the talk shows for the next week.
Bad offensive hold calls are notorious for being far too frequent, and also for killing drives.
Spotting the ball is a bit different, and in the context of the situation Sunday had a far greater impact.
The fix for bad holding calls is immediate review assist, within 10-15 seconds the call should be reversed. I believe this will be discussed by the Competition Committee for 2025.
The fix for spotting the ball is play better I guess, so its not in the hands of the reffs.
