Do I have an edge dealing Blackjack to my friends?

I was dealing my friends Blackjack, putting up my own money

it was a 50¢ max bet game and I would shuffle inbetween hands

it seemed I would lose when 5-7 players were playing, but win when there were 4 or less

is this a profitable situation?

I lost between $10-$15 over ~2 hours

Yeah, if you’re dealing and setting the rules, you already have a built-in edge. Especially if you’re not strict on things like splitting or doubling rules — that’s where most home games give the dealer an advantage. I was digging into some

the other day, and even in pro setups, small rule changes can shift the house edge by a few percent. Imagine what that does at a home table.

Depending on the amount of players, you can usually get a second round in before having to shuffle.

To truly protect yourself but also give the players all the best rule options, you can prohibit any changes to wagers after the first hand. I'm not aware of any set of rules where Basic Strategy gives the player the edge. The only way for players to make money in the long run is by changing their bet sizing (and playing perfect Basic Strategy).
