The "LOLCANADA" thread...again
So what's new?
I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet...i'd be shocked if they lost the election now.
Just shows just how incompetent Conservatives are.
I never imagined I would live to see what just happened.
That in 2025, the President of the USA would invoke a 25% tariff on the USA's top ally, and blame such tariff not on any weakness in a trade agreement that he negotiated and signed off on, but rather on a fentanyl problem that Canada supposedly significantly contributes to, and then further say that if we were to join the union and become the 51st State, then the tariffs would go away..
If you said that to me 15 years ago I would say not possible. Calmer heads would speak to the historical bond with Canada, and would insist that the above would just not happen. Especially the taunt about being absorbed into the USA.
Is there any Republican willing to speak to this, and denounce this as an unacceptable way to deal with an ally? No, of course not.
Who crosses Trump and ends up glad they did.....ffs.
Around the 2 minute mark trump mentions Canada and also starts again around 7 minutes mark. The man is sharp, not sure why so many people in this thread think he's just mashing buttons. Some American banks in Canada would be nice.
And I'm not sure why you bring this up as evidence of him being sharp - it's just him repeating the same nonsense of a trade deficit being a "subsidy", and doing so with a number that is 3-5x too high in the first place. At least he had some new talking points with banking and other trade issues, and so he's finally getting to the real point - that he doesn't like the deal his team came up with, and wants to reopen negotiations a year early.

he blames illegals entering from the Canadian border as well.
plenty of republicans disagree with going into a trade war with Canada.
but "denouncing it" is the worst possible reaction. with trump you praise him as the most genius move ever, you lie saying that you will bend the knee doing exactly what he asks, then he is pleased and calms down and moves to something else.
or you do "take a stand" and nothing gets fixed
You do realize the President can only impose tariffs if he thinks it’s in the realm of national security so he invents the national security issue with Canada . Is our border secure? No
No, our border are secure stop it .
Mexico maybe. But Canada please …. It’s nothing .
The U.S. aren’t in breach of national security from Canada ffs …
But again drink trump kool aid .
Ps: a national security isn’t an opinion depending which presidents is in office .
When it’s a real national issue u just know it …
almost 200k illegals tried to cross in from Canada in 2023
I didnt even check the article but let’s say it’s true , 200k illegal from Canada .
That represent , OMG -> 0.0006% ffs .
Ha yeah big national security issue lol …
Man people are gobbling any stupid garbage by trump it’s hilarious …
I'm not interested in a COVID debate and how many actual deaths there actual were. Just using it as a an example because I don't recall you having empathy towards the people who's lives were ruined because of government policy at the time. Infact you were probably the biggest defender of the policies at the time.
Thousands of Canadians probably millions have lost jobs or suffered due to choices the Trudeau government made they didn't vote for or have a choice in.
That probably why just afterwards Covid, we hit at an all time low in unemployment and we had drastic lack of employees for years despite massive amounts of immigration ….
This should end well. I'm sure the US is really upset we are taking away our internet connections..
And in the days leading up to this, Trump was asked if there was anything Canada, China or Mexico could do to stop the tariffs, his response was “No, nothing. Not right now. No.” Then when asked if he was looking for a “concession” from the three countries, Trump said he wasn't, and “We’ll just see what happens.”
All that said, I could see almost any result here. We know fentanyl and border security isn't a major crisis (sure, it could probably be better,
This was a number that I never realized till yesterday also if you remove oil from the equation the USA is at a surplus

Why would a republican speak up its the same here in Canada if you were a women in the liberal party and you spoke up you were fired by Justin Trudeau. That seems to be the norm

I never stated I agree with it but you do realize more individuals on the terrorist watch list crossed over from Canada than Mexico. Also we have up to 1/2 million people in Canada that are technically here illegally . Do I think it accounts to a National Security issue with Canada? Nope Applied to Mexico ? Yes
Pierre mentioned yesterday another important element is eliminating all provincial trade barriers . My guess is BC and Quebec would be the worst
Damn one of my ETF's down 7%
Doug Ford wants to "Go to the mattresses" over a 25% tariff? Seems like a very hinged guy. I am sure Ontario will fare very well from this.
The amusing thing is that Ford is specifically targeting Elon. I follow Elon on Twitter and he hasn't said a single thing in support of the tariffs. He isn't talking about it at all. He is just focusing on DOGE and cutting out all the corrupt US agencies and NGOs (in his words).
There is almost no chance Elon supports the tariffs. But as much as we like to joke otherwise, he isn't the president and he doesn't control Trump*. So Ford going after Elon isn't going to move the needle much with Trump, and he is just potentially making enemies for no gain.
*I am sure he has some influence on Trump where Trump doesn't really care or Trump perceive their interests align, but Elon isn't telling Trump "no, you cant do that" with the stuff Trump actually cares about.
Canada has the opportunity of removing all internal barriers to trade, if it seizes it, it can gain massively

What makes it even more strange is he posted it on X....
Looks like US equities are pricing in close to 50% chance Trudeau capitulates similar to Mexico.
Mexico bends the knee and so does Panama. Hopefully Trump doesn't know about provinces stopping the sale of red state liquor to alcoholics because that's really going to hurt.
Nah. It is all for show and to give Trump a PR win for his sycophants.
Panama agreed to not renew its contracts with China in 2028, and can always just change their minds anytime in the next 4 years.
And there is no chance the Mexican military is going to be interfering with cartel operations. For one, the Sheinbaum administration is sympathetic to the cartels. And two, they would just all be murdered if they interfered.
Not that it's any surprise, but Shopify CEO and co-founder Tobi Lutke threw support behind US President Donald Trump's tariffs, and slammed outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for not preventing the trade war.
"Canada thrives when it works with America together. Win by helping America win. Trump believes that Canada has not held its side of the bargain," said Lutke, after Trump signed an executive order on Saturday to slap a 25% tariff on America's northern neighbor (10% on oil), citing Canada's failure to help top illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling, the NY Post reports.
Lutke, who's worth an estimated $10 billion, said that "Leadership is about doing what’s right, not what is popular. And hitting back will not lead to anything good. America will shrug it off. Canada will decline."
"It’s simply the wrong choice in a possibility space where much better options would have been available," he continued.
Following Trump's tariff announcement, Trudeau told Canadians that tough times lie ahead for their largest trading partner.
Sounds like Ford is taking his ball and going home.
Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts. Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement, alongside our $200 billion plan to build Ontario. U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame. We're going one step further. We'll be ripping up the province's contract with Starlink. Ontario won't do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy. Canada didn't start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we're ready to win it.

I've heard one or two years from now, perhaps sooner:
"We are going to study the possibility of whether it can be finished earlier or not. I think it is due for renewal in one or two years," said Molino.
Also there was an expanded MoU on returning South American migrants from Darien Gap ( at US cost).
And that's fine, Panama will likely go back to China with more leverage and perhaps get a better deal from them. But Trump's term lasts thru 2028, and it will be this all over again. That's how diplomacy works.
So at some point Panama will choose whose side they are on, and I doubt it will be China's. But I might be mistaken.
It sounds like Trump is going to fold with his silly changing rhetoric about US banks today.
I'm expecting another delay of tariffs or a massive decrease in them like 5% and Trump will still claim he is the greatest.
In poker terms Trump is a Hellmuth and Trudeau an Ivey over this

In layman terms they are both idiots though one has a few good policies
President Trump uses tariffs as bargaining chips, that's all. All the items Canada wants to put tariffs on for the U.S. we can already get in our own country, and don't listen to fake puppets that were already dissolved; if you wanna vacation down at Walt Disney World you still have every right to do so no matter what happens with the restructure.
How do you all canadians feel about Trump treatening your country?
Ready to be 51st state ?
