Yeah. In NYC, it is a very, very common thing to see on Ash Wednesday. As far as I know, it is almost exclusively a Catholic ritual.

Rubio cross on the forehead made the round in Italian social media because we... actually don't do it at all.

Some old-style churches do it but then you are supposed to "cancel" the sign before going out of church.

The claims of Rubio being a radical fanatic only ceased on italian twitter only when some people started circulating the image of Biden with the same (albeit smaller) thing on the forehead from years ago.

But tbh i had no idea before the recent events that thing existed as a common practice in the USA

Exactly same experience (yep).
According to rick and victor you are a liar, how could someone living in a catholic country not know about ash wednesday.
And Italy is kinda catholic one would dare to say.

I've never been in Italy on Ash Wednesday, but it's pretty common among Catholics in the U.S.

Yes i believe you (and as said people clarified that on italian twitter).

But in Italy even when it was more common to have the ash ritual inside churches, it was never even "imaginable" to go out in the street with the sign on.

Interesting. I don't think it is common to remove the ashes before going out on the street here. But I'm not Catholic, so perhaps I am mistaken.

FWIW, I don't necessarily associate the ritual with religious extremism in the U.S. In other words, it isn't some crazy Opus Dei thing here.

Are you saying that secular people don't make decisions based on underlying beliefs? Or discriminatory ones? Because they do. Any time a politician or judge makes a decision, they're rank ordering things in terms of importance, whether it's religious or not. There are differing interpretations of constitutional law (textualism vs originalism, for example) that have nothing to do

Im not sure if you know but Montreal lives in a province were there is a law that you can not wear religious symbols at a public job . So no Burkas, Turbans if you want to teach, police, judges etc . Of course they seem to ignore Catholics with a chain and a cross of a tattoo of a cross

In Ireland it's not common to remove the ashes, you see lots on the street with them, again not as much these days but it's still pretty normal over here. I guess it depends on individual predominantly Catholic countries.

Even in Southern Italy? They seem more religious or observant down there.

It's not common in the USA, just not unheard of. I didn't notice it and find out what it is until I was in my 20's.

you're correct, but let's be real, not once has she ever spoken and i've thought "this person doesn't sound like a complete idiot"

Her problem wasn't that she often sounded like an idiot. (We all sound like idiots occasionally.) Her main problem that she often struck people as packaged and scripted. Trump is often unhinged during his rallies and interviews. But he doesn't have the problem of sounding packaged and scripted. It's a common problem among politicians. For the period I have been paying attention, I would find it relatively easy to bucketize politicians who have run for president according to this metric.

I would put the following people in the notably packaged and scripted bucket:

Kamala
Marco Rubio (very similar to Kamala in this regard)
Jeb Bush (worse than Kamala or Rubio)
DeSantis (worse than Kamala or Rubio)
Michael Dukakis (probably the absolute worst on this metric of anyone who has been a major party nominee in my lifetime)

I would put the following people in the bucket of people who do not come off as packaged and scripted:

Obama
Trump
Biden
George W Bush
Chris Christie
Bill Clinton
Pete Buttigieg
George H.W. Bush
Bob Dole
Bernie
John McCain

Some of these people -- Trump, Biden, Dole, both Bushes, Christie -- had other major flaws as speakers, but seeming overly packaged and scripted were not chief among them.

I would put the following people in the middle bucket:

HRC (more wonkish than scripted)
Nikki Haley (not terrible on this metric, but had trouble making her zingers seem organic)
Elizabeth Warren (same as Haley)
Ted Cruz
Mitt Romney (not really scripted, but came off a bit as a parody of a rich guy)

I'm sure there is an element of survivorship bias in this assessment, but ending up in the first bucket seems like the kiss of death.

Does scripted mean it's someone else's script? Because Bernie is pretty scripted. He likes to get back to his main themes in every response. But, he's sincere.

I think some of that list is conflating scripted with phoney.

I don't know if people in rural areas do that (remember, the strange thing is to keep the symbol after the mass, not to get it to begin with), my guess would be no (or i would have heard of it) but i never saw any on television, any famous person with it in a photo or video and so on

I wouldn't necessarily describe someone who returns habitually to certain themes as packaged and scripted. Bernie arguably suffers from a bit of tunnel vision, but I agree that he comes off as sincere. By packaged and scripted, I meant someone who presents as a somewhat empty vessel who is following a playbook written by a coach.

Cmon Bernie always used to be we must make the millionaires pay more over and over till he became a millionaire than it was we need to make the billionaires pay more

I am surprised no one has thrown in Gavin as a great non scripted speaker

You think Bernie presented as an empty vessel who was coached on how to be a presidential candidate? I disagree.

No but I do think he was scripted on many sayings over his career . I like Bernie I think the dems screwed him and I think he would have beat Trump

Elizabeth Warren (same as Haley)

Ok, but some of us remember when she ethered Mike Bloomberg, and that’s enough for me 😀

My comment wasn't really directed at policy.

I assume you are referring to their exchange about NDAs at Bloomberg's companies. FWIW, I think that NDAs are a complicated question when it comes to harassment claims in the workplace. It's easy to say that NDAs shouldn't be part of the settlement of such claims, but that position comes at a cost. The specter of a public shitshow -- whether a trial, a book, interviews, or whatever -- often is what forces defendants to settle. If they can't avoid the publicity, then very often it won't seem worth it to them to settle.

As a society, maybe we want to prevent victims of harassment--even those who desperately want to avoid the specter of a public trial--from putting a price tag on their silence, but it seems a bit awkward for me to tell a victim of harassment how to feel about that question.

There obviously is a social cost to allowing NDAs in harassment cases as well. It allows bad actors to remain in the shadows.

There are no cost free policies in this area. That's why it's a hard question imo.

Citation for the bolded.

The rash of attacks on Bernie being a millionaire was just hit pieces meant for people looking for reasons to hate him. His net worth is a couple/few million dollars because he owns two very normal homes, which is not at all surprising for an 83 year old who has had a reasonable salary for a long time.

Here's his summer villa

Also, I've barely listened to Gavin Newsom ever and I live in California. His reputation is much more the result of him being targeted I guess because Republicans expected him to run or feared that he would than anything he has ever done or said. As far as I've ever noticed, "typical Democrat" is exactly what he is.

It will never cease to amaze me what passes as a source to you clowns.

Here's some egg data with a source, just to show you how to do it.

Looks like as of this (Mar 7th) it's not lower than when he took office, but is declining. This is not surprising since the number of avian flu infections tracked has decreased.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have slowed over
the past two week and have been localized which is providing producers in unaffected
regions with an opportunity to make progress in reducing the egg deficit problem the
market has been experiencing. Offerings are light to moderate with mostly moderate
supplies. Trading is slow to moderate. Prices for national trading of trucklot quantities of
graded, loose, White Large shell eggs decreased $1.20 to $6.85 per dozen with a sharpy
lower undertone. The wholesale price on the New York market for formula trading of Large
cartoned shell eggs delivered to retailers declined $1.35 to $7.18 per dozen with a sharply
lower undertone. In the major Midwest production region, wholesale prices for Large,
white, shell eggs delivered to warehouses increased $0.12 to $8.42 per dozen with a fully
steady undertone while prices paid to producers for Large cartoned shell eggs increased
$0.12 to $8.24 per dozen. The California benchmark for Large shell eggs rose $0.28 to
$10.35 per dozen with a fully steady undertone. Delivered prices on the California-
compliant wholesale loose egg market declined $1.96 to $7.57 per dozen with a sharply
lower undertone.

Once they fitted all those chickens with tiny masks it only took weeks to lower the spread 😀
