2024 World Championship of Chess
Gukesh is currently 3-1 favorite to win.
I want to live in a world where Ding retains the crown. But I feel like Gukesh's

seems interesting, what are the chesstists thoughts on this?
i would have assumed he was better studied and you'd want to play street poker against him, ie whenever i played against those chess team needs in junior high who studied openings my best chance was just blasting off with weird attacks
There are plenty of amateur players out there who aren't really that good at chess but study up on openings a lot. If someone gets messed up by 'street openings', that's what they are, they're not actually good at chess. Magnus is not that. He's a chess uber-genius. As soon as you get to an unfamiliar position with him, that's when he will start to outplay you. If you play some silly opening, by definition it's a worse opening than the well-established stuff, and Magnus will crush you that much more convincingly.
I think that Hikaru was right, it was good for chess that Gukesh won. There's a chessmania in India which I don't think would have been the case for China if Ding won.
I think it's not so much that Gukesh is good for chess, but that Ding the recluse was terrible for chess.
