The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Consider for instance that Canada has had record oil and gas output under Trudeau, and that our productivity is stagnant compared to peer countries that also have things like carbon taxes.

It's inspite of Trudeau not because of, thanks to the innovation of the fossil fuel industry and finding ways to maximize profits and increase production under a hostile regime, along with projects already started before Trudeau's reign. Had nothing to do with policies or growth investment. 660 BILLION $ worth of projects didn't happen under Trudeau and the Liberals.

I think were forgetting the real problems with all this trump nonsense the economy nothing I have seen is going to get Canadians to stop investing in housing and instead invest in industry. We have had no real growth this decade. luckily we were a very good country a decade ago so we have some buffer

You did, but when you import people with lower productivity than those who are already resident, you cancel that out in per capita terms.

But for people who were already there you had growht, it's just that you added something like 7-8% of the population, and most of them are low income people, and those drag the average down a lot.

With respect, in my area the brown folks are the only ones willing to work at the Super Market or fast food anymore.

It's a similar issue to what Donald will figure out soon enough. We need them to help run the country properly (and for way more issues than just that). We might just need to improve selection a bit more. But we need them.

That's kind of racist.

You can like them becoming part of your country and that's not the issue, still if you import a lot of them per capita GDP is lower than it would otherwise had been.

Which is what you see in the data. And which is why you cannot use per capita gdp in 10 year being flat to claim that "Canada saw no growth".

Let me use a simplified example. You have 10 people making 100k each per year in 2014. You have 11 people in 2024, because you imported a guy making 50k per year, and the 10 people make 107k now.

Even if the original people increased their income to 107k, adding the 50k guy makes "per capita income" approx flat.

But the 10 original people saw a 7% growth rate in their real income.

They were also brought in to keep wages low. We were told it was because there were so many jobs going unfilled, if that was actually the case then it wouldn't be flat. Canada also wasn't the only country in the G7 to have mass immigration.

what? This is not how GDP impact or employment works. Or income levels. What the hell are you talking about

That's kind of racist.

I'll say! How white parents stopped pushing their kids to work is a disgrace to me. But it's everywhere in our cities.

And if you go to Miami, you see they have THREE tiers like that. Not two.

Oh jeez.

If you import a lot of people who pick up low income jobs GDP per capita gets lower normally. If canada annexes mexico tomorrow, GDP per capita drops immensely right?

That's true even if mexican starts to flood canada and improve their income (vs what they made before), the GDP per capita will still be a lot lower than what canadian GDP per capita was before the annexation.

Now the same works if you take in a few millions poor people from anywhere else. Even if they contribute to the economy their contribution is lower than what the per capita gdp was before, so the per capita gdp drops. They also take in dependants which drop the per capita gdp even further.

Not sure what your objection is here. If a country gets a lot of high income immigrants, that increase per capita gdp (see Ireland). If it takes in a lot of low income immigrants with plenty of dependants, that decreases per capita gdp (see Canada today, Germany when they took in 1 million sirian refugees).

That's uncontroversial, and if you try to read again, i claimed that is why Canada growth since 2014 APPEARS lower than it actually is, ie, my objection was related to the notion that the canadian economy sucked in the last 10 years, which it didn't has much as per "per capita gdp" metric would suggest, because of the dynamics i described.

I think it was by far that which had more as a % of population, followed by the UK, in recent years.

Immigrants don't bring their pre-existing market with them when they enter Canada (a la annexing mexico). They enter a new labor market and their income levels are directly tied to their employment in that market. It entirely depends on the type of work they are doing.

You know what though, I think I'm being overly harsh on this one. I'll concede your point that GDP/Capita does not necessarily reflect growth.

I never claimed they did, but very basically if gdp per capita is 55k, any family of 4 entering not making at least 220k (including profits they accrue to others) the day after they enter, lowers it.

Lol ok pal.

Still waiting for you to condemn poilievre for trying to spin trumps remark his way and one reading Trump. You were the one on a high horse claiming some big problems with uncited unquoted no context “liberals” doing what he did, no words of criticism when it’s your boy doing it?

The record oil output has as a massive factor that Trudeau bought and successfully built a pipeline to get albertan product to Asia, exactly what conservatives claim they want. He built it. Record oil came.

But sure even if you want to imagine a regime with even more record high amounts, and want to blame Trudeau for not being even better, this is still a very myopic critique of per capita gdp growth. Like if you aren’t even mentioning population growth or productivity challenges and just want to screech that an environmentalist once told you we should do some modest things to reduce emissions you’ve completely lost the plot.

That Trudeau!!! Is there anything he can't do? Pipeline builder, climate change stopper, ended the pandemic, threads the needle perfectly in trade negotiating. We can only pray our next PM is as talented as him.

But oil productions has been steadily increasing since before the expansion was complete.

Ya Canada just has no luck, facing all those productivity challenges noone else faced while all those people kept having babies.

Keep waiting then. I was responding to a post itt. But Pierre and his damn spinning, this type of X post is totally misleading. Trump was actually endorsing Pierre, obviously.

Again, comeon Shifty. This was transparent as it gets. Trump hates the Canadian Liberals and won't shut up about it. Many members of his team have made public comments supporting the canadian cons over the last few years.

e.g. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/musk-ca...

It's not working. lol everyone on X figured out Trump's "ruse". I would argue he actually made it worse for Pierre there, as most people like a good conspiracy.

Embarrassing list of demands from Premier Smith and ridiculous starting point with the new PM. There's 2 valid points in here and then a bunch of unworkable BS.

lol at poilievre trying to spin trumps comments and mindread Trump. So silly. So easy to condemn from those who claim to not like spin and mind reading.

Unless of course one is a hypocrite who projects on his opponents the exact behavior his own leader (not carney) is doing.

Carney announces today he's keeping the production cap on oil and gas. No wonder Trump endorsed him.

The only arguments you are good at defeating are strawmen.
