I love Merle and it reminds me of an amusing moment at a Dylan concert.
Merle was opening for Dylan on a leg of a tour in 2006. A buddy and I saw him 4 times in a week. Bakersfield, Las Vegas, Sun City and Tucson. Merle and his band were an absolute treat. A terrific band.
Anyway, in Sun City, which is mostly a retirement community, we saw him at the Maricopa County Events Center. A small intimate theatre.
We were behind an older couple one of which, or both, were deaf. I know that because there was a younger woman, a volunteer for the Center, signing for them. I had been watching her because not only was it fascinating, she was quite fetching.
So Merle ends his set and like half the people left. Clearly that is who they came to see. The couple stayed.
Bob comes out and launches into a pretty rocking ‘Most Likely You Go Your Way’ for the opener.
Bob is just blazing through the lyrics.
So I’m watching the girl signing and it is obvious there is a struggle and she has this bemused look on her face. After about a minute of that, she looks at the couple shrugging her shoulders, lifts her hands up in despair and chuckles. Walks around and sits down next to that couple having given up.
Ok, maybe that is funnier in my head now that I typed it up.
BTW, Merle Haggard and his band were magnificent live. I’ve always liked Merle but I had no idea how good he was live.
