Isaiah Likely, his team's TE2 had more TDs last season than McBride has in his 3 year career.

ok

by feel wrath m

either that, or it's smart to get in early to lock down a clearly ascending and already valuable piece of your Offense who had almost double the receptions of your next most prolific receiver when you have a ton of cap room.

they now have a premium TE and a premium WR under control for the next 4 years

I don't think that really applies to TEs.

If they let him play out his rookie contract, or at least one more year and then pay him, it's not like it's going to cost them $85M.

absolutely lock up mcbride now before kittle and other last year contractors skew the te market

so you would prefer them to follow how Dallas handles their contract extensions then over how Philly and Detroit handles theirs? Hmm.

he's a second round pick so next year is his final year. Next offseason, he'd have a load more leverage, the market would have risen, there'd be less goodwill and less certainty to plan around in terms of other moves.

They know they're going to do it, it's cheaper now than in the future, he's worth it, they can afford it/thread

i hereby nominate feel wrath to take over the Bungles football ops team

He is playing out the rookie contract - it's an extension.

Geno 2-75/66 extension. Really impressive re-generation of a career from him. He's not a top 10 guy but not many people could have predicted the money he's made and the games he's started 4/5 years ago when he'd been scratching round the League and was then Rus's backup for 2 years. He threw 4 TDs between 2015 and 2020 inclusive and he'll have made $175m most likely by the en

It's kinda crazy how quickly the Jets gave up on him, in hindsight

hindsight is always 20-20 but the Jets can't see their way out of a paper bag.

I'm obviously no GM, but making a guy who only had 2 receiving TDs last season, the highest paid TE in history is a certainly a choice.

TDs are the most useless and overrated stat in sports. Jerry Rice had 3 in his rookie season. He had 22 two years later and then 9 in the subsequent year. It just means there is a high variance to them.

The reality is McBride had the second most yards per game for a TE last season, just slightly behind Kittle and slightly ahead of Bowers. 19th in the league overall including all the WRs, so I'd say he is worth every penny of that contract. And I'm guessing he is a good blocker too, but I didn't pay much attention that last year.

Somebody should create a betting pool where you pick 10 teams that will not win a Super Bowl in the next 10 years. Payouts based on fewest playoff wins and no Super Bowl wins.

Jets would obviously be #1 on my list.

Hmmm...last I checked it wasn't yards that put points on the board.

I like McBride and I see the potential, but if the only reason for paying someone top of the market is "we better pay him now before it gets too expensive" (not a real thing btw), then that's not a good reason.

Especially at the TE where the market isn't constantly being reset. The 5 other biggest TE contracts were all signed in 2000, 2023, 2021, 2021, and 2022.

Agree w/ Gus. Do you think he just forgets how to run routes in the red zone or anywhere in opponents' territory?

Ya gotta pay these guys earlier rather than later.

A poster on a poker forum should understand the inherent variance with “who gets to catch/score the touchdown” in a particular game and yes a particular season.

If not, then I suggest you go back to Poker 101.

on any given snap from scrimmage only one in 22 will score the td

I already showed the TE market isn't constantly being reset like other positions, but even if it were, it doesn't get more expensive to sign someone later since the cap increases and it's all relative.

It's not just one season though. It's 3.

He has 221 receptions and 6 TDs.

That's a 3% conversion. Of course, we don't expect every reception to convert to a TD, but his is the lowest out of all the top 10 highest paid TEs. I guess they were just luckier.

If anyone wants to donate to the cause.

$50 / Under 5 Rec TDs for McBride
$50 / The highest paid TE will be no higher than $80M through 4/1/26

Spot on, actually.

Yes it's all relative - when Kittle signed he was 7.6% of the cap, McBride is 6.8%. Signing him later for more means less for other players
