(MICRO) Folded KK on turn - is this too tight?

Hello,

This is my first post and I just recently started playing poker again. I am lacking in experience and I am still pretty bad at poker tbh, although I do know how to play ABC for the most part.

I recently started playing live 1/3 again and I just started playing 2nl on ACR.

I appreciate your advice!

Info about the villain:

We are playing 2nl on ACR
I have 200BB in my stack and Villain has a little over 100BB
My HUD has tracked 387 hands on the villain.
Villain has a VPIP of 20 and PFR of 12.
Villain folds to 3 bets 60% of the time.
Villain has an aggression factor of 1.9
From what I have observed, the villain seems to be playing in a pretty straight forward way.

Villain opens for 3bb with VPIP of 12% of hands from the HJ in a 6 max online cash game 2nl. Hero has KhKs in the CO, and Hero 3 bets to 9bb.

Villain calls. Flop comes 9h7d6s.

Villain checks and hero C bets 3/4 pot (14.5BB). Villain check raises me 38.5BB. Hero calls.

The turn is Jd.

Hero checks and villain bets ½ pot.

After making the bet, villain had 31BB left in his stack.

I fold thinking he has a set. Although I considered the possibility that he may be semi bluffing with hands like 88, TT, or a Ax of diamonds. I also consider the possibility that the villain may be overplaying a hand like J9s. However, I thought this might be unlikely.

In my previous session I lost a big pot with KK in a very similar situation to the one described above. I have no doubt that that painful memory likely influenced my decision here.

Hi, a few questions. Not doubting your decisions (I'm new too), just curious:

  • Why the big sizing on the flop? Villains value range has you already crushed on this board. Like you say, 9x seems unlikely
  • What happened on the turn? Aren't you in position? How did you x/c?

I would've bet smaller on the flop, continued turn and likely called down any aggression targeting over pairs, 88 and Broadway diamond draws.

Still confused about the turn, but as played, probably still call?

Hi, sorry I am still new to poker hence the error describing the hand - here is the accurate hand history straight from ACR. That should clarify the turn.

As for the bet on the flop, I realize this was too large. Would a 1/2 pot bet be better? Should I ever be checking this flop with KK? Thank you for input.

Yes you can bet this flop with KK (of course !), and I believe you are supposed to bet big because you have a huge equity advantage. 3/4 pot might be too big though, you want villain to float you with some broadways (AhQh), raise you for protection with TT, etc etc. By betting so big you might fold out everything except the few hands which have you beat (some sets, 76s mainly)

I guess you can also check because you want to check with some hands that completely missed (KcQh...) + it's nice having some good hands in your checking range. But I imagine we check more often with AA, which cannot be cracked by an overcard on the turn.

It's not fun being raised here at microstakes because players will setmine a lot vs 3bets, but the pot is too big and there are more QQ, JJ, TT, A9 (yes they should fold preflop but they won't always) or even 88 being a bit adventurous than there are sets. Vs some well identified opponents you can make a big fold knowing they would never raise flop without the nuts. With your description I would just go all-in on the flop, not very thrilled but oh well.

Thank you, I really appreciate your detailed response.

The previous session I played, I lost a big a pot in a very similar situation with KK against a set on the flop - I think this experience really clouded my judgement.

I agree completely with your analysis and I am kicking myself for folding now, looking at the hand in retrospect and not in the heat of the moment.
