Moving to play live and grinding to 25nl in the meantime

Ran insane at my first 25NL shot 2-tabling. Up a little under a buy in after a short session.

People are way more aggressive pre, can’t tell how strong the pool is yet though.

I don't think I would ever fold to this size donk on the turn. He is betting less than 1/3 pot so you don't need to be good very often. I think this is really likely to be a draw of some kind or a weak pair with a straight draw (T9, for example). Obviously it's a really bad turn but I would expect a fish like this to bet bigger with trips. My plan in this spot would be to call river against small sizes and fold against big ones.

Do you ever go back and look at your opponents hole cards? Ignition will show them in the hand histories after 24 hours. That was my favorite part about playing on that site.

Thank you Dan! Also, you are completely right about this hand, should’ve definitely paid more attention to the sizing. In retrospect, I agree that trips certainly sizes up here. Just checked the HH again to see the hole cards (which I don’t do enough) and you called it, weak top pair that was behind to us. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts, probably too nitty by me.

I am a bit delayed on my weekly update for March 24th - March 30th. I had my family in town visiting and didn’t get the amount of volume that I normally would but had one of my best weeks to date profit wise. At about the midway point in my week I posted that I hit my $375 bankroll goal for online and moved up to 25nl. I have not only been running well at this new stake but also have a newfound focus that is derived from the angst of moving up, dealing with a stronger pool, and the wider swings which are inevitable. This ultimately feels like progress already as I had not realized how comfortable I was with 10nl and as a result sometimes “going through the motions.” more to come as I have only played a few short sessions at this stake so far.

I do not think that I am capable of playing worse than I did in this early afternoon session that I just wrapped up early. I was literally playing like a call station and not even approaching hands with a clear thought process. Down nearly a buy-in so I decided to call it and not chase, tonight I will fire again and probably study/workout before then as soon as I am done with work.

I think I am also going to start adding some personal goals to this thread. During my final year of college I got severely out of shape due to injury and then bad lifestyle choices. Starting a job where I sit most of the time and continuing those unhealthy habits have kept me at a weight that I am not happy with, despite not being a severe issue. Also, as I have mentioned before, I really need to move out of here because I am not particularly thrilled with the job and city that I am in currently.

** For my 50NL goal I am going to have to get my online bankroll to 1k. My thinking is that if I can win between 5-6bb/100 hands and am able to play 50k hands I will land between $625 - $750. Adding that to my current roll of $407 I should be right there. I may adjust this as 20 BIs may not be enough for a jump of this size in stakes.

I uploaded some of my recent hands to GTOW to use the analyzer tool and try to find leaks. One of the new things is a breakdown of stats and how it compares to GTO. Even with a small sample I noticed a few things with my VPIP. I think that I am playing the SB a little too loose and tightening up my BB too much. I don't mind the tighter BB range as I assume that a lot of times my opponents are not opening the correct ranges. However, 3-betting too wide out of the SB could get very costly and this is probably the position I need to be the sharpest. Same goes with EP opens as you can see below that my HJ open seems to be wider than optimal as well, I think most of this coming from the KXs / QXs combos which I need to narrow.

Also going to post some HHs from 25NL today as I have had a lot of very interesting hands. I quickly want to give an update before heading into the weekend as I think I will be playing live tomorrow in the afternoon/evening. Some friends from work are going to play basketball so that'll be a great way to get some exercise in before what I assume will be a long session tomorrow (since it is quite the drive). I have not been on my A game since moving up to 25nl but I do notice there are quite a few weak players in the pool and I think I can hang with most at the table. For me to excel over these next 50k hands it will take a concerted effort to play at times when I feel fresh, table select, and really sharpen my preflop ranges. When near the tail end of my 10nl run I think that I got kinda LAGy and lazy in some spots because I was just convinced that I could outplay everyone and was used to so many players just getting it in worse. This isn't always necessarily the case at 25nl as there seems to be some competent players at times and they are more aggressive across the board. It is exciting to have an opportunity to get better in this situation because I tend to find myself a lot more nervous playing against aggro players in general, even if they aren't great players. Part of this has to be experience but oftentimes these are the action tables that every player should want to be at. I have noticed this angst in live and online and think that it can be a great hinderance to me at times.

I also started playing on ClubWPTGold a bit to see what it's like because I have heard nothing but good things. I am going to track that as a separate roll and started with a $50 deposit.

I can't even call this one a bad beat, maybe should've slowed down OTT and if not DEFINITELY OTR. I mean by the time it was said and done there was a one liner to a J and some AXss flushes that are possible.

Despite pretty bad play (these are only the lowest of the lows but trust me there are more) I am still up about a buy in in my first 1500 hands of 25NL, need to get better.

Headed to the poker room now, about an hour and a half away at this point. Hopefully there is good action in the poker room with the Final 4 being on tonight. Three main goals for the session.

1. Actively range opponents during the hands, I tend to do this better in retrospect.

2. Don’t be afraid of playing big pots, focus on the most +EV plays only

3. Play optimal ranges preflop. Less flatting with marginal hands (which I have done from time to time when bored/stuck)

Last night's session went pretty well all things considered. I played for a little over 6.5 hours and decided it was time to call it a night around 1:40 am when the table broke. I spent about 5 hours of that stuck between $100 - $250 and this has always been challenging to deal with given the slower pace of live NLHM. However, by the end of the session I left up about $51 and I was happy to book a win, although small. I certainly am getting better at ranging my opponents in game but this is going to take a lot more practice, especially in multi-way spots. As for my other goals, I was disciplined preflop and played aggressively, taking advantage of the fact that many at my table were static with their preflop ranges and called down light. With this came pushing the action and using larger bet sizings post flop, which I have always messed up in the past. One thing is that I think I am overfolding in some spots and this will be evident in a few of the hands below. Before I get to the HHs, I always put some takeaways at the bottom of my hand histories in my phone notes so I might as well post them here. Next time I am planning to play live, I'll probably focus on these areas of study.

- After this hand I was pretty mad at myself for a while afterwards. Although a pretty scary board for AA I think that for the price on the turn I can continue. This was why one of my takeaways was pot odds here, I had to call $35 for a pot that would've been $208 before the BTN even called. Which means I am getting 5:1 and need to be good more than like 15%-17% of the time off the top of my head.
- Just horribly nitty, can call for this price I think. Maybe I am being results oriented though

I feel like I'm getting run over a bit at 25NL. It seems like every spot is tough and one of the parts I am struggling with the most is 3 and 4-bet pots. Otherwise, I am not entirely sure what I can do better at the moment. A few I know for sure is that I need to tighten up preflop, study 3-bet pots, expand and nail down my 3-bet and 4-bet ranges preflop so that I can combat my opponents aggression optimally, and review more hands that I play. Results posted below

- preflop ranges and drilling them in GTOW
- preflop 3-bet / 4-bet spots
- Study LP vs. BB 3-bet
- Study EP vs. BB 3-bet
- Study EP vs. BTN 3-bet

- Start looking at postflop for some of these spots and how to play them optimally
- Review hands where I faced aggression preflop or put the pressure on myself

Down about $5 total since moving up, about 20bb

I am open to any advice on how to study/adjust to the regs at 25NL because they seem to play so much differently than 10NL but with the way I was able to beat that game I didn't expect this difficult of a jump.

AA - I respect that you posted this hand. As I mentioned in my thread, sometimes I struggle to share hand histories where I know I made a mistake. Regarding the hand itself, my MO when playing fish is basically to never fold a value hand against small sizings. In theory, the double-donker in this hand should be insanely strong (plus you have to worry about the guy behind you) but I think the reality is his line includes so much random BS. Players like this don't really think when they bet, they just "monkey bet." They don't know if they are betting for value or as a bluff, they just know they have a hand that wants to continue so they bet because it's easier than check/calling. When they size up (or start to raise), then you can start to over-fold though.

TT - I think this fold is fine against a bet and a call. It's crazy the guy had 77, but I don't think there is much you can do against that. The guy is basically making a suicidal play by betting that hand this multi-way, especially for 3 streets. Even if you call flop, it's impossible to continue on the turn if he bets into two people (which he probably would have done). I guess just make sure you include enough KX+ in your range that checks flop.

66 - Definitely size up on turn with so many combo draws that will never fold (and especially against a sticky player who will hero with top pair). Probably should take a bigger size on the flop too, when he bombs it for pot into the field. It's so easy for Villain to put you on a bluff here on flop and turn. Make it as easy as possible for you to get your stack in by the river. As played, I like jamming river for under pot. I don't think that is a mistake at all.

This morning I started with UTG opens and how I am going to adjust specifically for 25NL and where I think I have had my biggest leaks recently. Then, I went into a review of facing LP/BTN 3-bets, 3-bets from the blinds, and EP 3-bets. I finished up the study session with a drill to lock the concepts in and will continue this drill a little later on.

Opening Range UTG:
- I open 22-66 at too high of a frequency, I may eliminate some of these completely because of the frequency of running into 3-bets. With others I will mix 50/50 (probably 55 and 66)
- Open KTo, QTo, QJo, and KJo too frequently. Only going to mix in some opens with KJo and probably eliminate the others.

Facing 3-bets, takeaways from studying:

I am far too static in my continuing ranges when facing 3-bets and not making enough of a distinction on whether I will be OOP or IP post flop. Also, there are some additional considerations when being 3-bet by the SB/BB since they use a larger sizing. These were immediately the issues that jumped out to me and looking at the charts I started to notice that I flat way too much with 99-TT, QJs, KJs, QTs, KTs, and ATs when facing aggression. Also, I am not nearly aggressive enough when facing a 3-bet from a player that is in position to me, I should be 4-betting more than I would in other configs because I don't want to play pots OOP with low SPRs. These takeaways are an obvious leak that I think will start to help already but I have a lot more to do this week in terms of diving deeper into this. One last thing is that I am not going to follow the 4-bet bluffs to a T or try to balance a continuing range vs. 25NL population. First off, the site is anonymous and secondly, there isn't much need for balance at microstakes.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate the feedback on the HHs! With the AA hand I like your thinking, vs. a small size it should be less concerning and I shouldn't worry too much about the straights, trips, etc. because of the preflop action. Also, the few times I call down and just run into it, so be it. I can think of it as losing the minimum with a value hand.

TT - I am glad to hear this fold is alright. Heads up I always continue here and if it was 3-ways I might even c-bet here. bet and a call I thought someone must have KX, especially on such a dry board.

66 - You're right here, Flop this player is never folding a K or FD so I can just go larger for sure. On the turn same thing, if I could have sized these two streets to have closer to 0.5 SPR or lower OTR I think it is way harder for him to fold to a shove.

It’s been a tough week of online poker!

25nl has fish and the game is beatable, which is encouraging in many ways. I think that if you told me a couple weeks ago I’d be down this much I would’ve been devastated. Instead, I feel like this is a necessary step in the process. In just a few thousand hands I’ve identified leaks in my own game and began drilling them pretty relentlessly. Now, I’m focusing on what I need to work on to beat 25nl at a decent clip, which I hope to do soon.

It doesn’t help that I haven’t run great, and there are a few hands that display this. The toughest was when I opened KK UTG, got 3-bet by the BB, and tried to slow play. Board came out draw heavy but low and we got it in against AA. Felt inevitable. The other was with QQ in a 3-bet pot when A5s called a jam OTT and hit the gutshot OTR. This is the type of hand I wanted to call and not have it be a situation where I don’t get paid OTR when they miss, so I made it a 2 street hand to get value.

This is just part of the game, I’m trying to dig into my memory a bit to when my confidence at 10nl tables was low and remind myself where I started. I may not be confident yet at 25nl but I feel it coming soon. For now, gonna spend a little more time on the 10nl streets for bankroll purposes, as I’d like to remain conservative in this regard. Then, I might even do one table of 10nl and one of 25nl until I have the confidence to go all out on 25nl.

Regardless, this weekend I’ll probably make the trip north go to play live again. In the meantime, I have to continue to study 3-bet pots.

Had a pretty good run online today and planning on going to play live again tomorrow. I think I’ve leaned into poker more recently as one of my best friends moved away for the next 5 months as part of training for a job opportunity. I’m really happy for him because he’s one of the smartest guys I know but it was tough to find anything in the job market right now, even in his line of work as an engineer. It certainly boosted his confidence a ton and I got to see it in action when we were out on the town talking to girls. Unlike him but a great send off nonetheless. Miss him already but we are headed to Hawaii with some other friends at the beginning of next month!

Things have been weird for me recently. I got told by a professional that I most likely have hypomania and this explains the somewhat frequent up and down swings emotionally. I think right now i’m in one of the downswings as I have found it difficult to leave my apartment recently, just feeling very depressive. It’s very passive though and not completely debilitating, it’s just that nothing sounds appealing at all. Now that I know this it only makes it more strange as I love going out, going to the gym, I do BJJ a lot, and live in a place where all these things are easily available. Yet here I am on a Friday night after I skipped out on plans to go out and just kinda hanging around my apartment. I don’t fully get it yet but I think poker kinda helps. I know that win or lose tomorrow I will probably leave feeling somewhat fulfilled from the fact that I got to do something I love. However, poker is almost just too easy of an out. It’s an excuse not to do the other things that I enjoy or have any sort of balance in my life. This week has been exclusively poker and I don’t necessarily want it to be a crutch or associate the game with these feelings. I also probably play better when I am actively taking care of myself. The number one concern is that I don’t want to burn out on poker and grow to resent it. At this point I’m just ranting buy whatever, my thoughts around poker and life this week.

Probably going to play live within the next couple hours and gonna try to play a long session today/tonight.

I started looking a little deeper into preflop for 9-max specifically this morning/afternoon as I mostly just reference my 6-max charts and in game think of UTG, UTG+1, UTG+2 all played similar to the true UTG in 6-max. I also tighten these up a bit depending on the game, open size, and some of the other live dynamics.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, I definitely recommend checking out CrushLivePoker's Solved4Live preflop charts. They not only have RFI charts but also ones specifically for ranges of raising over limpers which I think is very unique and helpful. What I discovered today while cross referencing these with GTOWizard's is that if you plug in 8-max for GTOWizard there are solutions for almost all raise sizes, from 2x opens all the way up to 7x and accounts for 10% live rake. I'm actually really excited to take a look into these more and start to create really solid live 3-betting ranges and optimal preflop overall. In addition to this, just seeing how the solver plays some lines at shorter SPRs because of the large open sizes of live.

I will provide an update if I go and play, both times I have been to this casino recently there have been good games so we will see.

Playing 1/3/6 on a $700 roll probably has a risk of ruin of 100% - i don’t think it’s a very good idea. Much better to invest the money into software, or putting it online to continue playing.

Why not just get another job to build a live roll to a point where you aren’t guaranteed to go broke?

Hey Norwich, I just keep any profit I’ve made as my “Live Roll” so this money I just don’t care about using for anything other than poker. In my current job I wouldn’t have any issue adding a couple BIs a month if needed but might as well play with the profit in the meantime. I’ve actually been thinking about slowly adding some money to my roll when I have extra cash lying around. Usually that money I just put into an investment account though.

Took @Nowich’s advice about my live roll and decided I would withdraw $400 for my 1/3 buy in, and a little more to keep my stack topped up (earlier advice from Norwich). In for $400 and out for $534. Overall a good session, have some hands I’ll post as soon as I get home.

Live Roll: $1241

Always nice when you put all the money in ahead and fold when behind. Definitely a valuable showdown too. I like how you played the turn and the river here. My main advice would be to bet the flop when you are in position. They have loads of TX that is never folding here. Even hands like 66 - 99 are going to be happy to put money in on this flop. If they have 4X, it doesn't really matter at this stack depth. The stacks are so shallow with the straddle and the bloated pot that you should just be looking to stack off here when you beat TPGK. If you wanted to trap this spot, do it when you have AsAx or KsKx, when there are less action killing turn cards for you. Even then, I think the default should be to bet (or raise if applicable) when you have a value hand in position against fish.

Here’s the plan for the week, I’m headed home Thursday to visit my girlfriend and spend Easter with the family. While there I think I might try to play one session on Saturday morning. My thinking is to get up early and have a 7 or 8 am session to catch everyone still playing from Friday night while I am fresh. Also, finally got the copy of Modern Poker Theory so I’ll be working through that.

- Play >1k hands online before I fly home

- Read > 100 pages of Modern Poker Theory
- break down 15+ online/live hands

As a side note, I’ve been reading 1Q84 by Murakami recently and have really enjoyed it. I’m a pretty avid reader and have a lot of books I’d like to share with others, this is shaping up to be one of them.

I didn’t get to play this weekend. My week was pretty shaken up when my girlfriend and I broke up after 2 years of dating. We decided this was the best way forward as she has career aspirations that include spending the majority of the next few years in the Middle East. It was the strangest breakup I’ve ever had as we had our best weekend ever together and everything was normal but we knew this had to be goodbye. Last night we went our separate ways with plans of not having any contact for a while so that we can move on emotionally before being friends. I’d for sure marry her if the situation was different but there’s too many unknowns about where the future will take either of us.

On the plane back to ATL, I just found out a new poker club opened about 40 mins from me with a time rake structure. Probably gonna give it a shot this week.

Haven't posted in a while but I am getting back to my weekly updates. This weekend I got back from a 10 day trip in Hawaii which was an absolute blast. I was with my best friends from home and the one has a close friend that has lived there for a little over a year. because of this we got to explore a ton of local spots I would've never seen otherwise. I will post some pictures in this thread.

I am currently coming off the worst downswing I have had to date. In terms of dollars it is only about $240ish online (which is nothing in the grand scheme of things I know) but it is still very disappointing. Right now my focus is going to be more on taking it one session at a time and setting intention before I play. This goes for my goals in poker as a whole as I think I benefit most from concrete and measurable marks that I need to attain to keep me on track. This thread also has been helpful in the past for being able to visualize these goals and I want to continue that. This week I will do the following.

- Finish Module of CLP Course
- Download/Print and review the ranges that are used for villain player types in CLP course
- Play Live this week - long session
- 3k hands in the GTOW trainer - c-bet IP / c-bet OOP in SRPs, Turn after IP c-bet SRP, Turn after OOP c-bet SRP, Turn after flop x IP SRP, Turn after flop x OOP SRP
- 2k hands 10NL
- 50 pages modern poker theory
- do 15 minutes of drills to warm up before each session
