1/2 KK UTG+1 on paired board

1/2 KK UTG+1 on paired board

1h into session. Table is very tight passive with very few 3b and people trying to see cheap flops.
Hero: 30s, playing tight straightforward, been involved in a few small pots so far
Villain on MP: 50s WG fairly loose playing around 35-40% of hands and while not particularly aggressive seems to take a stab at the pot quite frequently if checked to him
Both Hero and Villain have stacks of around £200.

Hero sees KsKc on UTG+1
Hero Raises to £10, MP and CO call

Flop 8c9hTc (£33)
Hero Bets £20, MP folds, CO calls

Turn Th (£73)
Hero Checks (?), V bets £30, Hero?

This board hits V’s range big time and loads of river cards are scary; what is our plan if we continue?

10 is the worst size, max rake ... if people are calling 35-40% of hands and nobody is 3betting then I'd go bigger. It sucks to go over 12 with a lot of hands, but not this one.

Check flop, or bet smaller.

Turn call as std. planning to x/call a lot of rivers depending on V's size and any other reads.

Turn bet is small relative to flop, and given there are 666 draws... If you think V is doing some stupid block like bet with worse or "semi-bluffing" his NFD or Jx or whatever then you could think about raising, but AA/KK are the two main hands I'd really rather not do that with.

You absolutely need to check this flop. Turn is an easy call. The board pairing is not that bad for your hand, but it is a terrible flop for an overpair.

Grunch:

PRE - seems fine.

FLOP - why are we c-betting from OOP facing two opponents IP? Just check and let one or the other stab at this very connected board, especially when we know MP likes to stab when action checks to him.

TURN - checking now seems fine. Definitely not folding, especially not to this less than 1/2 pot size. Just calling with plans to check-evaluate river.

Could you elaborate on why this is the worst size to open? Rake is 5% capped at £10. The other arguments are fine although standard RFI size has been £6-8 at this table.

I folded and V tabled red KK (!). Admittedly very bad cbet OOP and fold was too tight. More stuff to work on…

Almost everywhere I normally play it's 10% (although capped less) but that "10%" actually means that they take $1 everytime the pot crosses a multiple of $10, until the cap, so a $20 pot and a $29 pot are both raked $2 ... which is significantly less than 10% in the second case.

That means if you raise to $10 and get two calls the pot will be $30/$31/$32/$33 (depending on if SB/BB calls) ... in all 4 cases you are close to the $30 threshold.

For comparison:

Raise $7 & 2calls: $21/$22/$23/$24 (almost as bad)
Raise $8 & 2calls: $24/$25/$26/$27
Raise $9 & 2calls: $27/$28/$29/$30 (only bad when no blinds call)
Raise $10 & 2calls: $30/$31/$32/$33
Raise $11 & 2calls: $33/$34/$35/$36
Raise $12 & 2calls: $36/$37/$38/$39 (nuts 😉

For one caller:

Raise $7 & call: $15/$16/$17
Raise $8 & call: $17/$18/$19 (nuts 😉
Raise $9 & call: $19/$20/$21
Raise $10 & call: $21/$22/$23
Raise $11 & calls: $23/24/25
Raise $12 & calls: $25/26/27

...you might not be shocked to know I almost always open to $8 or $12.

I've only played 5% in the UK, and there it was the same basic idea with multiples of 10 but at the odd multiples you get a special/weird $0.5 chip back.

tl;dr Getting raked 6.9% or 7.7% is a lot better than %10.

Makes sense - I didn't know how precisely the rake was calculated. Also now I see why we have the £0.50 chip in the UK. Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation!
