British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
I wasn't talking to you.
You haven't made any case other than fortune cookies
JFC this constant stuff about gender, sex, trans is ****ing annoying and takes all the energy out of the room to discuss other stuff (climate, anyone?)I want a world where people are treated with respect whatever they are or aspire to be (as long as it harms or diminishes no one else personally - and I do not count virtue-signalling issue-warriors on that list of people that ne
Yes, very much this. In people's excitement to debate gender, sex and biology they forget how few of the population transition and how easy it should be to at least show this tiny number of people enough respect to allow them to identify with the gender they feel they belong to, freeing us up to debate things that are hastening the arrival of very dark times indeed that will directly impact ~everyone.
Do you get this garbled crap from fortune cookies or do you actually speak like this irl? 😵
I dunno? I thought
Sure you can remove any boundaries you like but you create new ones. In your example one hour difference over a small gap still can't support a difference between legal and criminal.
Good legal systems always require judgment. Including in who to prosecute.
was chez at his most eloquent.

What if what they consider "showing respect" is something that other people aren't willing to do? that's the issue.
Trans activists sued lesbian associations to have people with dick admitted as lesbians if they think they are women and they like women ok? what are they supposed to do if they strongly disagree with that?
It's inane to ask for "just respect them" when they make horrific requests and sue you if you disagree!!!

Which isn't a problem, provided they don't expect to get put in female prisons, changing rooms or get to unfairly compete against women in sports. Other than those issues, they can identify with the gender they feel they belong to, to their hearts' content.

Or in rape shelters for women, or they request to be accepted as lesbians in lesbian associations, or they want to take a woman job in case the law wants to secure at least X spots for women (if there are "pink quotas"), or they take subsidized loans for women enterpreneurs if the law gives that to women, or they ask to retire earlier if women can retire earlier according to the law, or any other requests that asks us to extend to them the privileges (if any) we want to give to women

I generally agree except that real political stuff is happening on this issue and some vulnerable people are being clobbered.
Talking about trade and geopolics would be great but iit is hard to find the energy. I do think we should be talking about rejining the EU or forming some greater bock with them and Canada etc. Instead we have reeves crawling to trump.

What do you think should happen if a trans woman who is always taken for a woman heads for the women’s toilets?
Showing respect to vulnerable minorities is clearly something you’re not able to do, but fortunately others are less compromised by the cancer of hatred.
there is no hatred involved on my side on this issue. But i see you dodge the actual reality of what happened: they request to be treated legally as women, when society builds privileges for women, what has "respect" to do with that?
can we refuse to treat them legally as women for all aspects (public and private) or that is "lack of respect"? lol at calling it HATRED anyway

They should be hit with a flying tackle followed by gratuitous and disproportionate use of a taser, then sent off to Belmarsh for seven, maybe eight years. No I'm just taking the piss, I don't care as there's plenty of unisex toilets for years and society hasn't crumbled over them and I left out toilets due to this.

Which women’s privileges are you referring to?
I listed many of them in the previous posts.
One of a zillion of examples currently in UK is this
Female Founder Finance is a women-owned organisation that works with female-led small businesses to help them secure finance and build their networks.
UKEF has partnered with Female Founder Finance so that female owned businesses can receive export finance support to help them scale up successfully through exporting.
UKEF’s financing support for small businesses was worth over £570 million last year, while an independent review estimates around a quarter of a trillion pounds could be added to the UK economy if women received more business investment opportunities.
UK Export Finance (UKEF) and Female Founder Finance have partnered up to help more women-owned businesses access export finance support to help grow their business and compete on the international stage. Having launched in June 2023, Female Founder Finance has handled over £115 million worth of funding.
Ok, so just niche things that no one itt has heard of. Those damned women and their incessant privileges.
What do you think should happen if a trans woman who is always taken for a woman heads for the women’s toilets?
Depends on how women feel about it overall. Again, don't see the problem with unisex toilets, but if the only option is male and female, then again depends how women feel about it. Their feelings on the issue would get priority over trans women's feelings.
Ok, what if women's feelings (assuming this is measurable) fall on the side of not letting trans women use women's toilets? How do you assess whether the female-looking person heading for the women's toilets was assigned the female gender at birth or is a tran, and who does the assessment?

Are you saying women in general can't tell the difference between women and trans women?
You're the only one who made a case for biological sex.
I have no quarrel with you if you really mean you would count anyone who produces large gametes as a woman . However much they had male attributes in other respects.
Okay, but
In Austria to this day women statutory age of pension is 60 vs 65 for men, that's gigantic, massive, an actuarial / financial benefit worth on avg well over 100k euros.
Imagine allowing any men to self-identify as a woman without no additional requirement just to qualify for that.
"niche things".

There are such things as opinion polls. Women and the young have turned markedly more anti in the last few years, as the consequences have become apparent. Women are now as anti as men on every 'transgender' poll question except one (whether people should be allowed to 'identify' as a different gender, where men are don't-know and women are pro). Only under-25s remain substantially pro, but less than a few years ago and on less than half of the poll questions.
How do you assess whether the female-looking person heading for the women's toilets was assigned the female gender at birth or is a tran, and who does the assessment?
Women do. If they don't notice or they aren't bothered, there isn't a problem. If they do and they are, there's a problem. That is how it has always been until the last few years, when there was a now-failed attempt to force Judith Butler's peculiar notions on the world at large. Some people can sometimes be accommodated by an informal flex, but you can't give men the legal right to invade women's space, or else nothing can be done about the men who are only there to cause a problem -- like the weird gang of Scotsmen who had themselves photographed picketing a ladies' loo to protest against the Supreme Court ruling a couple of days ago. They were very obviously there to intimidate women, because that's their game. That was also why the weird Mridul Wadhwa got himself appointed head of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (illegally on the Centre's part, because they advertised the post for women only and, as the Supreme Court has pointed out, the term 'women' does not include men). Wadhwa was on a self-appointed and self-declared mission to 'confront women's prejudices' and make them 'reframe their trauma' by refusing to allow rape victims female counsellors, but of course his time in office was disastrous, resulting in a train-crash employment tribunal when a female counsellor objected to the lunacy, and he's now been handed his cards.
