Exactly! Which is why one would think a book telling everyone a really important thing like how the whole world came into existence that we really need everyone (even the stupid people) to understand would try and steer clear of such ambiguity.

I must be stupid; I couldn't understand that long sentence at all.

You are, but not just for that reason.

Ok, I'll concede that some smart people might have eccentric beliefs. 15 is still not a significant number, and as a percentage of all physicists that have a place in history it's basically de minimis.

But 10 Nobel Prize level physicists in the 20th century seems like a not insignificant proportion. That's more than 5% of the total number by my reckoning, similar to the proportion of other minorities who we recognise as being "not insignificant".

I suppose we should do chemists and biologists too.

by geezerchess m

This!

Don't know if it's still true, but in the 1990's The Skeptical Inquirer published a survey among members of MENSA that showed that while MENSA members tended to not believe in God, they were more likely than professing Christians to believe in numerology and astrology.

There is definitely a tendency for humans to be superstitious and to believe in supernatural forces. If one has a lack of belief in some of those, that makes it more likely for them to believe in others.

I will admit that I am surprised by that number and it has given me some pause in using religious beliefs alone as a yardstick for intelligence, or more accurately, lack thereof. I guess indoctrination from a young age can have an indelible effect even on very smart people.

I doubt you will find many who admit to believing in astrology or numerology though, for sure.

by jalfrezi m

Attractiveness is commonly understood to be a subjective assessment. The ability to play chess at an elite level isn't.

Although the term is no longer PC, the category of "idiot savant" still exists. Some people are extremely good at one particular intellectual task while being far below average at nearly all others.

Right. Astrology and numerology dont so often form part of the indoctrination that kids suffer and when they do are much more easily debunked in adulthood.

Astrology people piss me off more than the god people. I don’t know why…

Ftr I don’t like either

Probably because you're a Taurus, they hate astrology.

Linus Pauling, the only winner of two unshared Nobel Prizes (for chemistry and peace), had some weird crank beliefs about Vitamin C. Unkind interviewers used to get him started on it just to make him say wacky stuff. There's a crank element in the human mind, a craving for a magical solution to everything, which in many people, including otherwise smart people, the intellect alone can't appease.

totally bro

speaking of cranks, how's about you tell the thread your thoughts on trans people?

What's non-crank KoG approved take on trans people? That brains have some sort of gender switch that's fully independent from sexuality? I'm just curious

You are all cranks with questionable takes on specific topics

Gender and sex are a different thing and those whose gender does not match with their "sex assigned at birth" should be treated as full citizens and not oppressed and discriminated against (as they are now)

i.e., showing basic humanity to those who are different

57NigelFarage, on the other hand, makes JK Rowling look like a pro-trans activist. On multiple occasions he has said any number of overtly and deeply transphobic things. But he doesn't use cuss words and makes charming references to TV shows from 60 years ago, so, you know, the absolutely genius libs around here think he's a fine gentleman.

by corpus vile m

Or you could tell the thread your thoughts on Hamas, Dr Crankenstein

ok

I'm not a fan of them overall, they've committed numerous atrocities over my lifetime, but the army they're fighting against has committed FAR MORE atrocities and is also currently engaged in a massive campaign of genocide on a captive population, and so, I root for Hamas over the IDF in this conflict.

Did you think this was gonna be some sick gotcha or rhetorical device? WTF? No, I'm telling you that 57TommyRobinson is a Nazi that uses his genteel mannerisms and random trivia knowledge into fooling you level 1 thinkers into thinking that he's something he's not.

Don't people like the Horseshoe Theory? Go to the I/P thread, and you'll see that 57EpsteinFriends is anti-Zionist in the same way that many ultra-right maniacs are. We hold the same position on this conflict for completely different reasons.

They're the ACTUAL people who "hate Jews", and they don't make it a secret. Spend 3 seconds on right-wing Twitter.

by jalfrezi m

Unfortunate that you chose the mixed race guy as an example when you could have gone with Hewitt.

this is the trouble with the left, when left to their own devices they'll always eat their own

take the one of the strongest and most persuasive lefties on this forum - someone who literally gives credibility and credence to a lot of you guys and you'll still attack him and try to put fear into him "appearing racist" when no racism was present

it's just sad

lololol I think it was CV (we call him CoronaVirus) who went, like, "you and you HAMAS LOVERS would never DARE to criticize Islam!", and then I went "Islam sucks, much like all religion", and then... I don't know, I was banned immediately afterwards for being too correct on everything, but apparently CV has NOT committed seppuku out of the pure shame he incurred from that exchange, as any honorable poster would.

Yeah. Hence your moniker of Dr Crankenstein?

Did you think this was gonna be some sick gotcha or rhetorical device? WTF?

Nah. Just knew you wouldn't disappoint when asked to display your crankesque credentials. 😀

Um, 57 isn't a fan of Tommy Robinson and his genteel mannerisms is because he's English. Haven't you seen a Hugh Grant flick?

Don't people like the Horseshoe Theory?

You certainly are a compelling argument for it, definitely.

Yes. Differ-ent. Of course. Ahem etc.

Or y'know, horseshoe theory. Or...other commonalities.

Some people to the left of the Republicans are pro-capitalism, pro-foreign intervention, socially reactionary, and anti-welfare for impoverished citizens. Other people to the left of the Republicans are very deeply and basically existentially opposed to those tenets.

Democrats are an enemy to social progress. Just because the Republicans are an EVEN GREATER ENEMY to social progress doesn't mean the left feels the need to caucus with the libs (and, of course, the libs/Dems would never MOVE LEFT, the horror). I mean, one of the primary motivations of the DNC is to squash the left. They won't SAY that, obviously, but, you know, look it up.

Hopefully I have sufficiently explained the reason for this great mystery.

lol wow coronavirus, great post, many compelling arguments, I'm gonna have to take a moment...

anyway, "Mirriam Webster defines 'genocide' as..."

the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group

-Deliberate? Of course
-Systematic? Of course
-Destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group? Offfffffff course

This is why I say you Zionist genocide-excusers are at war with the dictionary (along with your war on children)
