Grinding MTTs
Hello there. I'm an MTT grinder from New Zealand. I've been playing poker forever and have found a little success the last four year or so years of grinding. Averaging 100kusd roughly a year. Playing spins then switching to MTTs the last two years. I want to put in more volume and perhaps this thread will motivate me to do so. I've also never really discussed poker hands with anyone much so it will probably be helpful to post a hand or two along with my thoughts about it for feedback. If I can average 40mtts a day I'll be happy. I'll post daily updates here.

100k$ a year? did i read it right? imo that’s crazy successful, can you also post a graph?
Hy. No ideea how old are you, but if you ask me, it is kind of hard if not impossible to play each day 40 mtt's. Maybe u can pull it off 1 day 2 days, a week, 2, but doing that constantly of 40 mtt's every day seems impossible.
I have been playing for 18 years and I know for a fact that after u play 5-6 years constantly, you need breaks and go outside and do other stuff than to stay 12-14 hours each day on computer.
I admire your enthuziasm, but you definetelly need to balance it out.
Good luck in your journey

Yes about that. Almost all of my volume from late 2023 has been on WPTglobal which isn't tracked. I played spins from early 2022 to mid 2023 on Partypoker. I will get my database and some point and post a graph for those games. They were pretty good with over 100% rakeback at the time.

I'm almost 38. I play a lot of hyper turbos so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Today's results after rakeback:
Games: 28
Win/loss - $751

The hands I play on WPTGlobal aren't tracked so I'll always be missing some volume in the graphs.

I'll say what I think before I look at solvers or anything when i post hands. I think this is a 100% cbet board. I think tt can be bet or checked on the turn. I didn't think of this in game but it might be a good combo to check the turn with seeing as his backdoorflush draws are unblocked. The river i dont know - it might be a better call than aq or ak potentially. Seems like a good combo to call with actually.. he wont have many offsuit 10c hands to bluff with. It might actually be the best bluffcatcher possible. Doesn't look like a good fold in hindsight. If I was to guess id say people are overbluffing this line on this river as well. Should also say it was a bounty tournament so he will defend my 3bet wider.
win/loss; -$427.75
What a loser! Good Luck!
I was getting killed with variance in MTTs. I was only up around 20-25k for the year by June which isn't really going to cut it to support my family. I swapped to the 18 man mystery bounty tournaments on GGpoker around June 10 for some lower variance games.

The results are ok for the first month. It isn't amazing money but it's enough. I should be getting better months when i hit the two highest rakeback tiers. I was climbing towards the 50% rakeback level at the start of month as well. The results there are with 60% rakeback but it caps around 80% in the games if you can hit the highest tier rakeback level + leaderboard prizes. I'm not sure how good I ran overall. I did hit a $2500 bounty which should only happen once every year or two but ran poorly in chipev. If I were to guess I likely ran slightly over ev.
what are those SNG on GGpoker? are those spins?
will be following gl
I was considering grinding MBR games next year but they've at least halved the pvi in the games now. They were pretty good you could ev 150k a year in them if you were one of the best regs, but they've been a bit gutted now.
It seems its just temporary during the christmas gift box promotion and the pvi will return to normal after it is done. I will likely be playing MBR next year.
My year:

I also apparently won $14505 on WPT for the year which surprised me because I felt like I was getting killed there. I did win a package worth $12400 there in January so it was almost a breakeven year there aside from that. So +88653 for the year.
I'm really not sure what I'll play next year. Could be tournaments or it could be sngs. There are pros and cons to each. With tournaments I have no idea what my true roi is. It could be anything from 0 to 30%. Tournament workload is a lot easier than sngs. I think in tournaments I only play about 1k hands a day at most because I'm just late regging. Tournaments have a higher ceiling for ev. But i dont see the ceiling being anything more than 200kev a year the way im playing them even if I up the average buying significantly and become much better. If my ev for sng is >130k a year I would play those. I would have to maintain a pre rb roi of -0.5% to ev that if I masstabled 3 days a week for around 500 games per day. I'm not really sure what my roi would be under those conditions. Playing 150 games a day and 8-10 tabling it was close to 4%. I'm also in a terrible timezone for sngs and would have to get up at maybe 3am to play which would disrupt my family life. Tournaments probably are the best option when I weigh everything up but for some reason I feel like trying to sngs for a bit.
Do you play any live mtts, or have any plans to?
No I don't, but I may do in the future
I'm going to play mtts next year but up my average buyin to over $100 at least. My goal is to win at least $150k for the year. It makes much more sense than playing sngs for a variety of reasons.
I got destroyed in January at mtts;

Also lost another 2k or something on WPT
I decided to move back to sngs in February and have run way above ev;

I think my actual roi long term in these after i hit the highest rakeback tier would be around 8-9% post rakeback. My goal was to get in 300 games a day five days a week but so far have fallen short. ( I'm only managing around 250). I think the problem is I'm using too much of my energy on thinking about decisions at the first level and getting burned out from the volume before the week is over. I need to have a very simple strategy early as it's the most insignificant part of the sng to conserve mental resources and not try to 'battle' other regulars too much there. I'm finding it difficult especially towards the end of the week to not to get worn down but I can't complain about the results so far.
Very interesting thread. How do you study your game? do you use GTO database subscriptions and try to memorize or do you heavily exploit your playerpool? have you taken any structured masterclasses / courses during your poker career?
Good luck for the rest of the year

I just use holdem resources calculator and gtowiz. I do study equilibrium a lot but of course deviate when appropriate.
