Jazz: America's Music
Today I purchased Blue Train by John Coltrane (on the blue note label) -Excellent and beautiful flowing Jazz work. Comp
Stuff
Live at Montreux '76
Cornell Dupree - Guitar
Eric Gale - Guitar
Richard Tee - Keyboard
Gordon Edward - Bass
Steve Gadd - Drums
If we're drafting Steeley Dan drummers, I'll take Bernard Purdie.
Did you know? Steeley Dan is named after a dildo in Naked Lunch.
and Cornell Dupree played guitar with the likes of Aretha, Cocker, King Curtis, Roland Kirk, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, and several more
speaking of which, let's play Aretha at Montreux, also including Bernard Purdie
Sam Jones on bass is one degree separated from all jazz history
not really exaggerating
haven't even acknowledged this one yet
yes that's Philly Joe Jones on drums from Miles' first quintet with Red Trane and Chambers
Not sure if this belongs here. Maybe?

anything bill evans trio is just cheating
The only thing about Bill Evans is every song has to come to a complete stop so the bass player can do a terribly recorded dying whale solo.
And here it is sung.

One more version of the above.

well
so long to that as your attitude
may i humbly suggest
closing your eyes
and listening again
how
Scott LaFaro
mind you
the only musician literally pulling strings in this tres instrument composition
establishes the fundamental structure that Evans and Motian explore
Every song, bro.
yes, and?
I did see a jazz-adjacent bass thing recently that blew me away.

I can't help, after listening multiple times, but think that the bass solos are anything but lovely. Is it that he grabs the melody that you object to? I remember in the 60s when Mitch Mitchel played drums with Hendrix, some people would jump all over him for grabbing the melody line, but I always thought it was cool.
bass as heart beat, not harp featuring
emotions created by a trio of head and limbs
motian lafaro and evans
ok I listened to Nardis again
it sounds to me like
charlie browns teacher
singing Nardis in a tin can
I don't care if he grabs the melody
just don't grab the waitress
I am always already amplify
with zero appreciation for acoustic bass
If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme.

Not to be a bummer but Victor's older brother who plays guitar is the most self-indulgent, bullshit musician I've ever seen. No idea what is going on with that dude. His tapping sounds like mice trapped in a shoebox.
That's a fair assessment. Indeed, Regi has a style of his own, and I could see he might not be for everyone.
the entire album, named after Hermann Hesse's anti-fascist novel, is incrediblehard to believe it was recorded in '73, a nostalgia piece that sounds at least ten years younger, hearkening back to the days when Jordan was playing with Mingus and Dolpy
Ah, thanks for the small rundown of Glass Bead Games. While I am no jazz expert, I've been listening to it consistently for over 30 years and I had never even heard of that album or artist. I will be digging in!
I just discovered saxophonist Marcus Strickland while listening to a free preview of SiriusXM, with the Real Jazz channel playing his song Tic Toc from the 2017 album Nihil Novi. What a fantastic, fresh sounding album!
The production quality is also top notch (produced by Michelle Ndegeocello and engineered by Bob Power who was the sound engineer on The Low End Theory). A few of the songs also feature Chris Dave on drums (The Chant, Drive, and Cycle specifically).
I don't know if anyone listens to Mark Murphy these days, but he's one of the greats.
