Getting the bag set up for the new season, spring golf trip in less than two weeks. Got in 9 holes last weekend but the forecast doesn't look promising for any more golf before I leave.
Not too many changes, really. I have been kicking around the idea of playing with a reduced set, but I probably won't since I ride most rounds. I'd be more likely to do it if I picked up a smaller, lighter cart bag.
3W: TaylorMade SLDR, 83g Tour Preferred S
Used this some last season to pretty good success. I didn't get along with fairway woods for decades -- the last ones I liked were persimmon -- but I think my swing has gotten sufficiently slower and shallower that they are now a possibility.
Putter: Odyssey O Works Black Marxman, 37"
Going to see how long I can go before making a change. So far feeling pretty good about this putter but it may only take one 40 putt round to get me to bin it.
The putter didn't make it through May. Someday I'll find one that works. Also kicked out the 3 wood and the 1 iron is out temporarily. The last spot is alternating between a 37* Niblick for chipping and a super high lofted wedge, depending on the course.
Forgot about this thread. I'm going to True Spec Wednesday. Age of my clubs:
Driver - 2ish years although I never use it.
3 Wood - about 4 years.
3 Hybrid - 6-8ish years
4-PW - 6.5 years
Wedges - 1-3 years
Putter - 2 or 3 years
Bought these used in 2008 when the clubs I bought new in 2003 got jacked from the trunk of my car. I'm terrible, so it ain't the clubs, regardless of how old they are. If I ever start to consistently break 90 I'll consider new clubs. The only thing I'd change is dumping the 3W for a 3h if I can find a nice used one.

Thinking about getting a 7 wood. Haven't had one since I was a kid, but since I've gone from hating fairways to hitting 3 wood an insane number of times (with success!) maybe I should take it a step further. I've been less happy with the hybrids this season.
Anyway, I've changed my bag around since the last time I posted ITT and am going to tinker some more this weekend.
I wish there was a beginner question thread. I don't want to clog up other threads but I'm still learning.
Anyways, I'll ask here.
I have a 3 wood that I've been using for second shots on long holes, and off the tee when the situation calls for it. It's killing me as a second shot club. Just can't hit it consistently. I've done a little googling and I see people are suggesting a 5 wood. I don't have one. Should I?
Also, I have this little club that has a "3" on it. Much shorter than my 3 wood. I hit it farther than my long irons but not as far as my 3 wood. Nice little club for me. What would this be called?
The little club with the 3 is called a hybrid, kind of a cross between an iron and a wood. Itβs supposed to replace a 3 iron but it goes farther and is infinitely easier to hit.
Hitting a 3 wood off the ground can be difficult due to the length of the club and lack of loft with the head. But you hit your hybrid well so it is possible for you. Based on that a 5 wood could indeed be a good thing for you. Itβs easier to hit vs a 3 wood because itβs shorter and has more loft making it easier to get in the air.

ntnBO does a great job explaining why you should at least try dumping your 3w for a 5w.
I currently have Driver, 5w, 3h, 4h….I do not miss my 3w one bit. I’m long enough I can get to par 5s with my 5w/3h. But even if I needed to hit 3w in I’d be reluctant because it’s so tough to hit off the deck. My 5w is great off the fairway, but lofted enough that I can confidently advance balls out of the rough with it as well. And the times I want less-than-driver off of the tee, the 5w is plenty.
Been using this set-up for the past 2 months, although the putter is sometimes switched out for an Odyssey 2-ball.

I put a g430 7w in my bag 2 seasons ago. Itβs really fun throwing darts from 210 out.
I love people talking about equipment that they spend a crap load of money on and still suck. I will guarantee I can play a set of ping zing red dots 2 degree upright and destroy anyone in here with their modern equipment.
Well, Ping Zing red dots are 1 degree flat and built in such a way you really donβt want to bend them. Even if you could bend them 3 degrees it wouldnβt stay that way.
Sarcasm is lost on me. Come back when youβre sober.
I have no idea what a ping zing red dot is but if someone wants one I'm all for it.
