I'm no expert, but 7' seems to be tight quarters to be swinging a Samurai Sword.

Mailbox project finally complete. We've been having lots of rain lately, and I've been working some late nights, so I'd get an hour or two in here and there.

Of course, had some misadventures along the way, but nothing major. A few mistakes, but final product is functional. Good enough for the girls I go out with.

Not sure what next project might be. Hardwood floor needs to be refinished, but I want to look at extending it. The former is likely beyond my skills, the latter defiantly so. House could use new paint, too. I can do that of course, but it seems like a lot of work.

I have a few ineffectual windows that I would think 'detail' would look good... I am not really a moroccan stylistically, but perhaps something 'Arts&Crafts' or 'Art Nouveau'I have a rather wide 7' entry hall that could use more 'flare'... the 12.5' ceiling is a little uninspired and there are two windows that behind that are not really useful for anything but to let light in.l

IMO, let the light in and use the detail on the ceiling.

See this is what I like a mailbox built for two people.

Nice job! Now I know who to contact if some jackass runs over my mailbox again! I can't pay much. But free beer!!! But I might wait until you acquire hardwood floor refinishing expertise 😀

See this is what I like a mailbox built for two people.

The neighbors on one side of me and the ones behind me share a driveway and have a setup like that. I've been thinking of asking if I could piggyback on theirs so I wouldn't have to walk across the road to my mailbox.

When this area was out in the sticks (many would say it still is), the mailboxes were all on the west side of the highway--other than a few people who had medical exceptions made. At some point USPS relaxed their requirements and allowed mailboxes on either side of the road. Even weirder is that my mail is delivered by a different carrier than my neighbors'. My main problem is that the shoulder on my side isn't wide enough to accommodate a mailbox, and even if it could it would probably get taken out by some jackass every few months. Oh, well. I haven't been hit crossing the road yet.

Not to worry... I have some .300 blackout to fall back on.

when you stand inside your front door looking out, what compass direction are you facing? due west?and after turning a sick kick-flip 180* that doorless opening at the opposite end leads into...the kitchen?not knocking your current situation just too lazy to search past posts for corroboration, is your speakerful living room most easily accessed through the opening hard right

Front is facing east... I get laser beams in the AM up until 8am or so. Again, light is terrible for artwork.
Kitchen is straight back past that second wall and the listening lounge is beyond that... to the right is formal dining and left is laundry and garage access.

for sure adjustable narrow beam track heads would improve the entry gallery lighting situation
but for someone who takes so much pride on what he hangs on the walls that purple blind looks like a woman's golf mini-skirt

I missed this earlier and had a laugh.

FWIW.. Schu, I like your place and your style.

Meeting with the contractor and architect today to hopefully begin to nail down a design and schedule.

by Mark_K m

Thanks Mark! btw, what about non rectangular shapes? eg. 1/2 circles or pie slices.

I know I saw on one site that they could manufacture it in any shape you want with drawings from you, but I can't find anything about irregular shapes on the site of the company I'm dealing with.

I'm also finding very few reviews of this company, Smart Glass Country, which is worrisome, I guess.

I'm kinda disappointed these guys didn't come to help.

$95k. Hard pass for me.

that's about what I would guess for an addition... that might even be slightly lower than some markets.

Maybe I'm being unreasonable, which is definitely possible. It just seems like a high number for not a lot of work.

How big an addition?
One floor, on a slab?

12 x 15 room is 180 sq ft and at $95k that works out to about $530/ft cost. Although it doesn't make sense, reno/additions cost more than new, especially if you want quality work.

Still waiting on price per square foot. It's over an existing space. I might just sell and move.

Good luck!

I do admire people who are willing to pack up and move at the drop of a hat or an addition or ... really anything.

Seriously. I am just too much ruled by inertia.

inclusive of design and permitting fees or just construction cost?
things can be sliced and diced so many different ways you need to find a baseline to measure the tide against

Pretty much this...

Definitely remove the high drapes and let light in all the time.

Besides that, the biggest impact thing would be adding a long narrow rug to entryway (Moroccan or cheaper is Afghan ones).

I'm with Tom (though I do like it here, which is a nice benefit). Not sure if I'd say admire, but respect. I have a friend who moves about every 4 years or so. Sometimes it's within an area, sometimes long moves.

In 2020, he and his now-wife took off to Seattle on what seemed like a whim to me. He said offhandedly one day, "I'd like to live by the ocean someday," and Jill said, "**** yeah1 Let's go to Seattle!". Two weeks later, they were in the Pacific NW.

In the five years in Seattle, they had three different places.

This spring, he texted that they were moving to Richmond, which is where they've been for about a month.

We moved a few times when I was growing up. Usually because my parents were offered better jobs, but at least once for this exact scenario. The quote they got for an addition would have been more expensive than simply buying a new house. Maybe that's where I got it from, but I certainly don't move every few years.

The price per square foot isn't terrible and is probably reasonable. Just a bigger number than I was expecting.

Ive done it a few times... for me it's not fun.
After growing up in So Cal for nearly 40 years, and moving around Los Angeles and Orange Counties multiple times, I was given the opportunity to move to Tennessee to help start a business, so I took up the challenge and packed up a four room home worth of goods and moved us out to Memphis. After about four years of business growth, I had a falling out with the money man over equity split in the company, and I walked out that same day and never looked back.

Two weeks later I was on my way back to California and move to an area above Santa Barbara. central California is pretty much paradise if you like the slow small town lifestyle, and I do, but with only one card room within 2-3 hours drive time I decided to take the family to Las Vegas where I reside for the most part full time now.

moving that much is NOT high on my list of things to do again...

Growing up, I went to 8 schools in 3 states before graduating high school. University and a year or two post-graduation obviously moved apartments a few times. Since then? 15 years in my condo (should never have moved), and 15 years in my current house, give or take a year here and there. I plan to be here until I retire (8-10 more years or I'll know the reason why!), then a significant down-size to somewhere until I die or go to the memory-care unit. Moving sucks.
