MuckPls vs BigWhale - a WSOP June TR
Hey everyone! Figured since everything is booked on my part I will go ahead and fire a thread. After a disastrous last t
Itβs about 11 hours iirc. Not too bad
Long haul planes are a lot better than US internal carriers - more room, better/bigger seats and better service. Iβve always found that once youβre on the plane and have accepted the confinement, itβs actually pretty ok. Particularly daytime flights.
Read books, watch movies, get work done, eat and drink etc.
The pain with long haul is getting two long flights in a row - eg Sydney London is 12 hr then 3 hours then 9 hrs or Sth. The changing, waiting, re-boarding etc and then sitting down to another long flight is a painβ¦particularly in Coach. And the lack of sleep then takes it out of you.
I fly coach to the US from Australia but pay for business class if going to London
If I remember correctly the flight is usually around 10 hours, give or take a few minutes. Obviously a long stretch, but hopefully the plane won't be completely packed. I have however booked an aisle seat, so I can move around a bit even if the row is full.
Have done this trip many times now, and it's honestly not too terrible. A bit boring at times for sure, but if you have enough stuff to occupy yourself with it's manageable.

Aisle seat is the key IMO. I always book one in the centre section of the plane. Aisle is much better for moving around and if youβre lucky you a) get a spare middle seat or be the person in the middle seat chooses the other person to push past when they get up
Not for Whale or feel wrath, who are seasoned travelers; some advice for others who might not be.
1) On super-long hauls, find a place along the way to get off the plane. Don't be on planes/in airports for 30 straight hours (or whatever).
2) Bring some OTC sleep aid or NyQuil-type medicine. When the meal & drink service comes around, get a beer/wine/whatever and pop the tabs. You won't get there fresh, but you'll at least have some sleep and won't be exhausted.
3) Eye mask, headphones/earbuds.
If only they didn't turn on the lights and wake you up for that carb-filled breakfast a few hours after dinner -- at least heading out of the U.S. Let us sleep!!! (And give us protein if you must wake us.)
For me itβs pretty easy: I load up my laptop with insane amounts of series. Split it between food and drink and maybe take a nap.
On the way home Iβm always exhausted so that part doesnβt matter, I usually sleep 7 out of 10 hours.
All right guys, we are in Las Vegas. Flight was mostly fine, except 1 hour of straight turbulence between Iceland and Greenland. But as soon as that was over, we had a very smooth ride the last 6 hours or so.

Breezed through immigration in 5 minutes, and after a quick taxi-ride we made it downtown to The Plaza. One slightly annoying thing though is that the entire North Tower has an issue with water supply (or something), so they put me in a 'Mini Suite' in the South Tower instead, which are the old rooms:

The room itself has some cool features with a small bar and a huge fridge. My overall first impression though is that it looks a bit shabby, and there are some annoying quirks. For example, at the working desk in the picture above, there are no power outlets at all nearby.
That said, these unforseen circumstances can obviously happen, and although I would have liked to have a Luxe Room instead it's still just a hotel room and it's not like I will spend 15 hours here every day that I am staying Downtown. So it should be fine, and hopefully quiet too (not facing Fremont Street).
I went outside quickly to grab some refreshments, and the heat outside is almost unbearable even at 9pm. And although I love Vegas, the craziness of Fremont Street (although it's a Monday) felt a bit overwhelming. But tomorrow morning I will love it again, don't worry π

Now I'm gonna take a shower and head to bed. Will come back stronger tomorrow, although I have no huge plans in regards to tournaments before Wednesday.
Hope you get some sleep - is the room insulated from the noise of Fremont?
GL, hope you win at least one bracelet by the time we arrive in 48 hours!
Also, the countdown is officially on!

Longest flight I've taken is 5 hours, from Nashville to San Diego. I was going stir crazy, pacing back and forth. I was afraid I might get tazed, although I deserved it. Wonder if a taser would hurt.

Why tho? Donβt you like movies or series? By the time you watch two movies and get some food 5 hours have breezed by.

I have relatives in Australia and 20 years ago we did Budapest - Vienna - Kuala Lumpur - Sydney in one go. 32 hours of total time including transits and 26 hours or so of flying. I was young then, no way in hell I can do that again without dying. The Vegas flight alone is so bad I have to pack pain pills because of my bad neck.

Worst I ever did was Sydney to Barbados for my brotherβs wedding.
That was Syd - LA 14 hrs. 4.5 hour stop. LA - Miami 5.5 hrs. 5hr stop. Miami San Juan 2 hrs. 2 hr stop, San Juan to Barbados was like 90 mins iirc.
When you factor in getting to Syd airport 2-3 hours in advance, 1 hr to airport and then transfer to hotel at other end, it was like 38 or Sth. Was ****ing brutal
Quick photo-dump before I get the day properly started. Let's hope for some good cards this trip:And here is Plaza behind a Fremont Experience Stage (with some good cards on top of it):
I remember when my college buddies and I took our first Vegas trip circa mid-1970's. We thought the Plaza was the grandest hotel we'd ever seen. Your a/c unit was probably brand new.
I've stayed at the Plaza a few years ago (pre-'Rona), similar room but I can't recall which tower. Felt dated/shabby then, I can only imagine what it must be like now.
Oscar's Steakhouse, Hugo's Cellar in the 4 Queens and the steakhouse in the Golden Nugget are fine establishments for all your steak needs that I have personal experience with. LV Strip options are probably a little nicer, and more expensive.

Yeah I had originally booked a Luxe Room, which are fairly new rooms (2019?) and look much nicer. But apparently there was an issue with that tower regarding water pipes or something, and it would not be fixed until Friday.
