No, I believe the people who gave them the money did.If you remove the option for hyper successful people of using their money as they see fit (including giving it to their heirs) you are expropriating THEM, the creators of value, not their heirs.Their heirs are just lucky beneficiaries of the original value producer decision. But allowing that decision is what creates the cond
I guess I just disagree that the most productive people would stop being productive or move elsewhere if they knew their heirs wouldn't get to inherit a large portion of their assets. But then I am an outlier who doesn't have children.
If you knew it was impossible for you to leave much money to your children after your death, would that really make you work less hard, to stop trying to make more money you (and your family) could enjoy while you were alive?
I will will take your word for this man being a Nazi (I don't have the patience to research a social media pundit, especially what I suspect is a dumb one). I will also state that his Tweet is rather stupid, as I suspect plenty of schools teach this part of history. However, if the point is that his claim about the horrors committed is wrong, then we're in dubious territory. Sure, but Luciom's misuse, or anyone's misuse for their own personal political agenda still doesn't erase the reality of history - just like you would be watering down history by calling republicans Nazis in the same manner as your example of Luciom calling dems marxists. So TD wasn't saying anything that you'd necessarily disagree with - just re stating a rather important distinction. It just becomes a name-calling spectacle when it is stripped of its complexity and used as a rhetorical weapon for their own sporstball team.
I mean, I was literally arguing over some of the most idiotic **** with three self-proclaimed Marxists/communists in another thread when their entire argument at best rested around finding a way to offer better heathcare and improved living conditions for poor people despite the fact that in good faith, their arguments never gets footing to the left of a mixed market socialist approach for obvious but very important reasons.
I think it's possible to both call out the rallying cry without watering down the Nazis and Communists of the 20th century like we have.

I know very well that there are plenty of pundits who want to point out the horrors of these communist parties, then they will call non-conservatives "leftists", then they will leftists "communists", then they will call communists "Marxists", then they will call Marxists "bolsheviks", then they will accuse them of these horrors and then they will support political persecution.
It is called "cultural Marxism" as is a known conspiracy theory among Nazis, nationalists, nationalist-adjacent conservatives and these days also among mainstream "conservatives".
Nor would it surprise me if tweets like these are part of an effort to use this conspiracy theory against a perceived political opponent. Perhaps someone like the democratic mayoral candidate of NYC.
As I have said once before, I know people (not as close friends, but enough to call them acquaintance) who lost their children to terrorism done in the name of this conspiracy theory. So anyone who wants to downplay this conspiracy theory, its impact or how dangerous it is, or perhaps even support it... those people can **** off.
However, that there are idiots and callous political pundits who want to exploit a conspiracy theory for clout doesn't mean we should not talk with a bit nuance when throwing these terms around. People like this love to talk in half-truths and then rub it the truth portion back in your face if you try to point out that they are dishonest sellouts.
Of course, that leaves the matter of how to engage with people like this in the first place. The answer is usually "don't". Engagement just rewards them, because that is how social media works.

I don't call democrats marxists generically though. I call people who explicitly endorse marxist ideas, marxists. On both sides. I called Carlson a marxist because he is for example. At least for some stuff ofc. Bannon is a leninist (*and he self identified as such in the past*).
It's genuinely scary from where i sit to see such a polished , cunning, extremely well produce piece of political propaganda by someone who represents basically everything i hate in politics

His outreach/communication team is really pro level as well, necessarily.
Solid posts and fair points from both of you (formula and deuces)
I don't recall any sort of course material on either the Russian or Chinese revolutions/civil war.
Marx of course was well covered but not anything related to the Bolsheviks directly.
Huh, you might want to look into the Chinese "Cultural Revolution" and the Bolshevik "Red Terror".
Maybe these things aren't taught in many schools, but I learned about them in high school. I was barely taught anything about Marx in school, even as an economics major in college. Some in optional philosophy courses.

I recall now some Lenin readings in either a political philosophy class or this weird writing intensive class in the Russian studies department I took, but you'd basically have to take contemporary Russian or Chinese history to get those things and I'm pretty confident they weren't covered in any k-12 material I got.

I did learn at least a little about those things in my grade 10 world history class. But most was in my grade 12 AP modern European history class.

I took AP European History but not Modern European History-- which wasn't offered.
It probably went from like the 16th century until WWI or II so probably could have covered the Russian revolution but I'm not sure it did.

They must have changed the name - the only one offered in the 80s was called modern. I don't think we got much past WWII either though. And Chinese history wasn't part of the program, but I had the same teacher for that, 9th grade geography, and 10th grade world history, so I don't remember exactly when we learned about that, but he was very big on comparison of revolutions.
I watched a documentary last night on Hannah Arendt. I had never heard of her.
The parallels of early nazi germany and current U.S. is mind blowing. The first thing hitler did was start rounding up immigrants.
She had lots of notable quotes, but I like this one.

Guess what happened after that? Increased SS funding and support and throwing people in camps

Nazi Germany existed for 12 years then they got royally ****ed. I mean, this time you can't expect much help from the outside but......

She coined the banality of evil phrase and afaik she had an affair with Heidigger, who was a Nazi supporter.
I really don't think you guys are gonna go like Nazi Germany, even if you do seem to be getting more authoritarian.

Literally everything that has happened since trump took over is exactly what happened in the early stages of hitler.
Probably none
